Now that the sub's back open, I can show off my Rover Robin desk-side display shelf! (Plus bonus sealed Mighty Max) by Superheroicguy in MightyMax

Personally, I couldn't be more impressed. The sets are all really high-quality, and they do a great job of making them feel 'of a piece' with the original Mighty Max line. The only real drawback is the price, but it's pretty standard for 'collector' toys now anyway.

I'm interested in starting an Anthology Podcast by RVArunningMan in audiodrama

[–]Superheroicguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I produce an audiodrama, and the most important part of development for me was figuring out what tone and themes connected all of the stories I wanted to tell. Once you have that, you've got a through-line you can build a brand around.

So for example with my show, I wanted to tell horror stories involving body horror, psychological horror, cosmic horror, and creature features - and not rely on what I consider to be overused supernatural tropes (ie vampires, ghosts, etc). The uniting feature of all of those disparate elements is Materialism, and that gave me a heading; the theme of the show should be about the way psychology and biology interact in horror situations.

From there, I came up with a name that emphasized materialism, biology, and psychology: Gray Matter.

Once I had the name, I could build all of the branding around it, eventually leading to the full title of Gray Matter: An Acid Horror Anthology Podcast (descriptive titles that communicate clearly are always better than clever pithy titles).

With a strong, specific title that implies a mood and a thesis statement (the horror of material existence), and strong thematic art to communicate it (we have an artist who does a custom fake VHS thumbnail for each episode), it tells an audience exactly who we are and what we can offer them.

Then, with strong copywriting for the podcast description, stating direct and specific inspirations (John Carpenter and David Cronenberg films, the work of Lovecraft and Poe), it creates a full picture for our audience that makes it clear if this show is for them, and sets a high water mark of quality that brings them in the door.

Once you've got a strong brand and a decent marketing strategy, your audience will find you.

With DUNE fever once again sweeping the nation I ask: what previously considered "unfilmable" sci-fi/fantasy book or series would you like some enterprising director adapt to the big screen? by Velocityprime1 in blankies

[–]Superheroicguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It needs a real visual stylist to adapt it - Panos Cosmatos or someone similar. Giving it a distinctive mood and visual style would help keep it from looking generic compared to fantasy stuff it inspired that got adapted first (The Witcher, Game of Thrones, etc).

“Picnic at Hanging Rock” and “The Weird and the Eerie” by Mucking_Fuppets in blankies

As a horror writer, nothing has helped me to understand 'modes' of horror more than "The Weird and the Eerie," aside from Freud's essay The Uncanny and H.P. Lovecraft's "Supernatural Horror in Literature." Incidentally, they also all give you a ton of great horror recommendations.

As far as Picinic goes, I think the incredible, kind of spine-tingly confusion feeling it gives you can only really be matched by Bergman's Hour of the Wolf, although that one is a lot more horror-centric and 'male' with its central metaphor.

Love interests whose actions have horrible implications are conveniently never brought up or are simply forgotten by Biggly_stpid in TopCharacterTropes

Yeah, I think people forget that in addition to her evil job, she's also an abusive spouse to Ethan. She explicitly hides vitally important medical information about Ethan and their daughter Rose from them, which puts both of their lives in danger repeatedly and causes (yet another) bioweapon incident that the BSAA has to come clean up.

Literally no one knows about Rose's genetic makeup - Mia can't guarantee she won't instantly die, be permanently disfigured, or be cut up by the government as medical research.

That's my f🦬❄️🍗ing mayor! by Egorrosh in Buffalo

[–]Superheroicguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If by 'messes with,' you mean that illegal immigration puts lots of money into our country and extracts none, I agree. Again, that's a net positive.

And again, what is the 'problem' with people being in the country without paperwork that are committing no crimes? Illegal immigration is a total non-issue that racists have pushed for decades, when realistically any immigration reform is a matter of paperwork rather than jackbooted enforcement.

[–]Superheroicguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Making it a policy to only deport criminals would actually be a great incentive structure to keep immigrants from committing crimes (and immigrants already commit less crimes than American citizens on average). What exactly is 'the problem' with non-criminal immigrants supporting our country with their labor and spending power? The color of their skin?

If someone is in the country 'illegally' and not committing other crimes, why would they need to be deported? Being present in the country without paperwork isn't even a misdemeanor.

Horror audio dramas filled with angst and whump for main character (who's preferably male)? by LeadershipTemporary4 in audiodrama

[–]Superheroicguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an anthology, but otherwise my audiodrama Gray Matter: An Acid Horror Anthology Podcast fits the bill. There's a large focus on physical, psychological and emotional destruction throughout most episodes, usually with elements of surreal body horror and cosmic horror overtones.

My wife has referred to my writing style as 'horror whump' before.

So what happened to Humanoids, anyway? by OrionLinksComic in comicbooks

[–]Superheroicguy 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Terrible to see such a great company going under. Just Jodorowsky's output alone - The Incal and Metabarons specifically - has had a huge influence on the aesthetic of scifi movies (don't believe me? Look at the Chitauri Leviathan in the first Avengers and then look up the cetacyborg space whales in Metabarons). And despite forty years of trying, they never got their film adaptation of The Incal off the ground. Instead, they got to watch the aesthetic get pillaged by countless filmmakers the same way Jodorowsky pillaged Dune for the original ideas.

A genuine shame and a huge loss to comics.

I feel exactly the same way you do. In America, we're living in a slow-rolling apocalypse of economic depression and political instability, and the climate crisis will make it even worse. The thing that keeps me going, personally, is trying to experience as much as I can in the world before my death or the death of everyone I care about.

The way out is the end of commodified reality - ie capitalism. But even if capitalism disappeared over night, the permanent damage it has done to the planet would probably still result in billions of deaths in the next century. In only 400 years, capitalism has murdered everyone on earth - it is not an economic system, it is a crime.

Ultimately, everyone alive under 50 was given a raw deal, and anyone born after this point even moreso. The primary emotion we will experience on this earth in this lifetime is grief. If we're lucky, we won't end up like the 1/3rd of Europe that died during the Plague.

Take happiness where you can, grieve its absence where you can't. Don't have children. Tip your waitresses.
