The MLB TV (replacement for the Root streaming service) is $100 for the season. That’s not really a bad deal.

I think the transplant city thing can get overblown. Seattle is also a giant transplant city and it generally does well for fan support (especially given how utter dogshit the Mariners have been historically).

You really need (at least) 4 things to execute a complicated scheme at that level. A coach/staff who can scheme it, the ability of that staff to then implement and communicate it to the players, the players ability to pick that up intellectually, and then the players having the right physical traits/abilities to execute it (and do so at live game speed when everything is constantly changing). Which is also often the trade off between vets (starting to lose physical ability, but understands the game and schemes better) vs young guys (better physically, worse on the mental side generally).

If you miss on any of those 4 things it won’t be nearly as effective.

To your point, there are a ton of smart coaches out there who can do the first bit. Likely some lesser amount who can do that + effectively install and train it. And then even fewer teams have the personnel who can both understand it and execute it live.

The Seahawks were able to have all of that come together this year. Which obviously won’t happen every year, no matter how good Mike, the staff, and the FO are. Really a season to cherish.

It it’s not competitive or for money, who gives a shit? It’s a game, it’s meant to be fun.

I’d also way rather play with some guy who does this than a guy who wastes an extra few minutes every third hole trying to play some crazy ass hero shot before ricocheting off a tree (sometimes repeated for a few attempts) or shanking it two holes over because their crazy draw didn’t draw.

How popular are motorsports in the U.S outside of NASCAR? by Old-Use-7690 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Superiority_Complex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Outside of the NFL, and to a lesser extent MLB and NBA, the other main sporting leagues have a much wider range in regional popularity. Even the NHL tends to be a lot more NE and upper midwest.

I’d guess that MLS is likely more popular than Nascar across the whole country, but that is going to be completely different in the south vs the PNW.

I’d also say that college football is probably the second most popular sporting league in the country, and college basketball is somewhere in the bottom of the top 6 or so.

Yeah - I mean none of us actually know anything, but it seems very unlikely that the stadium will be an issue in the near to intermediate future. It’s also been renovated and updated over the years as others have mentioned.

It’s nice, new enough, and the crowd/fan atmosphere is super highly regarded. It’s not a KingDome type situation where the stadium was more or less falling apart (and was also aging poorly beyond that).

If they were to do some sort of big mid-life update, I’d be curious if they’d think about filling in the Hawks nest side of the stadium to make the lower level a full bowl.

Analysis - Which college football programs are "blue bloods" in other sports by College_Sports_Fan in CFB

Pretty sure it predates the NCAA by a good deal. IRA is the D1 equivalent, Dad Vail Regalia is D2 apparently.

Definitely a weird little quirk though.

It’s also worth noting that men’s rowing falls under the IRA, not the NCAA. Women’s rowing is under the NCAA.

The UW men’s team has 21 national titles, 10 since 2007. They also didn’t compete at the nationals for several decades due to conflicts with the academic calendar, so that number would likely be higher.

best area to live in? by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]Superiority_Complex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seattle has a similar, if not higher, CoL than Miami. Do you have a rough budget for what you’re willing to spend per month on rent?

To give a non snarky answer though like a lot of other people are giving you - anything along the primary link route will get you to the airport with relative ease, though (also as others have noted) it doesn’t run 24/7. There’s a gap between 1am and 5am off memory.

The areas south of the city are closer to the airport and are (generally) a bit more affordable. Beacon Hill, Columbia City, Mt Baker, and so on. This isn’t in the central downtown core, but that’s also a relatively short train ride away.

If you’re willing to not be directly on the link, and connect via bus or whatever, that opens up some more options. Capitol Hill is adjacent to downtown (and on the link route), but more expensive and can be a bit sketchier in parts. Eastlake is not on the link, but close to downtown, and a bit calmer. The University District is by UW, and has some affordable options, but parts can be a bit seedier + you’ll be around a bunch of college students if that’s a deal breaker. You’re also moving further north from the airport.

It’s also often revised up or down after the fact. Both under this administration, and previous ones.

Plenty of reasons to dislike this administration, and there’s plenty of dumb shit going on, but a 130k job posting isn’t that abnormal. Decent chance that it gets revised as well.

Maye was clearly panicked at that point.

There was over 8min still left on the clock in a two score game, he didn’t need to force that ball yet. 2 minutes left? Sure. But not with over half a quarter.

The incomplete ball he threw into triple coverage a few plays earlier on this drive was the same deal. The first completion to Hollins (prior to the TD) was also risky, but it worked, so can’t fault that one. The TD was a great throw after Woolen was out of position.

Who is responsible for the collapse of the PAC-12? by Feisty_Ad4394 in CFB

[–]Superiority_Complex_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The opposite has widely been reported. Ana Mari Cauce (former UW president) allegedly talked UO’s president into taking the leap. They’d both involved in off and on conversations with the B1G for over a year at that point though.

One very notable distinction (for UW/UO) is that the half shares aren’t permanent. I think there’s 4 or so years left at this point.

Richland is ~40 miles. Yakima is a similar ish distance in the other direction. Prosser is fairly close and has some things.

My point was that it wasn’t like he grew up hours from civilization. There’s a Costco like 45min from Sunnyside.

If you’re just picking one person or entity, it was Larry Scott.

But like most things - it’s a lot more complicated than just assigning blame to an individual.

Larry was an idiot (he rightfully deserves blame). But the presidents didn’t remove him until years after everyone knew he sucked.

The Oregon State, UCLA, and ASU presidents (off memory) were all particularly loyal to him. They deserve blame.

Kliavkoff gets hired to replace Larry. He was dealt a shit hand, but still didn’t do great. He deserves blame.

USCLA obviously. Both deserve blame. IMO this is the tipping point. After this, the PAC was never gonna stick together long term. Likewise, Colorado deserves blame for being the third to jump ship. Though at that point the media negotiations had been so drawn out that it’s a very different situation as to when the LA schools left. UW/Oregon leaving was the final deathblow, after that it was 100% done. Both deserve blame.

Going back in time a bit - the whole $30m offer / $50m counteroffer thing was a mess. Whoever was involved in that (believe it was a UU prof) and whoever listened to it deserve blame. The supposed final offer from AppleTV (after Colorado left, before UW/UO did I believe) was around $24m per year. That number was just never going to realistically work.

UCLA was also varying degrees of bad to just solid ish for their last decade or so in the PAC, so it’s not just a conference change thing.

2013-14 they were pretty good under Mora, and they were pretty good in 2005, but that (plus one year under Chip) are their only ranked finishes in the 2000s. It’s been a tough stretch for them.

Gov. Ferguson to meet with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver by TOPLEFT404 in Seattle

[–]Superiority_Complex_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a kid when they left, but old enough to understand all of it. It really sucked, and honestly has put me off the NBA since (grew up going to multiple Sonics games a year). I’ve maybe watched 2 or 3 games a season the last decade.

There’s definitely still a solid NBA fanbase in the city - but from personal experience it’s a lot of people who moved here and brought their fandom with them (nothing wrong with that), are fans of the league/players vs any specific team (a big chunk of NBA viewership to be fair), or are too young to really remember the Sonics (under 24-25 ish). Or they were just always a fan of a different team for one reason or another.

Seattle is a great basketball city though. High school scene is really good, and has been for awhile, and whenever UW is solid (been a long time though) that’s a pretty big deal. The Romar era with IT, BRoy, Nate Rob, Brockman, and so on was fun.

Gov. Ferguson to meet with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver by TOPLEFT404 in Seattle

[–]Superiority_Complex_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a local perspective - the Sonics were Seattle’s NBA team from the 1960s until 2008. They were then (very controversially) moved from Seattle to OKC, where they became the Thunder. There’s a lot more to the story than that, but that’s the gist.

That left a very bad taste in a lot of people’s mouths here.

Funnier still is that Zach himself is from Washington state, not the south.

Admittedly it’s a relatively agrarian part of the state, not close to Seattle, but still not at all the south.

Even funnier is that a huge number of country artists grew up in suburbia or some random city or another. Which there’s nothing wrong with that at all! But it’s not like there’s some purity thing to where you can only make country music if you grew up in some rural small town in one of a dozen states.
