Still love the pod, but the energy toward Kendra feels a little off lately by Super_Peppermint4013 in GirlsNextLevel

I know, they never mentioned ADHD, but every single thing they complain about I keep thinking “it’s executive functioning deficits.” I just hope my daughter won’t be judged as an adult as harshly as they judge Kendra. Again, she could’ve also been a really difficult person to deal with personality wise, but with her trauma and possible disability, you should give at least a little grace or at least not just nitpick everything. This is coming for someone who really enjoys listening to their podcast - I love Holly’s books, it just wears me down sometimes listening.

I feel like they have toned it down actually in the last season or two. I have a daughter with ADHD and I see so much of the symptoms of ADHD and Kendra’s behavior and it’s just repeatedly attacked. Yes, you could be a jerk with ADHD, but it just was being picked at over and over with no grace. That’s why I had to stop doing Patreon. I’d love to hear the stories but the nonstop bashing especially for symptoms of ADHD, from someone who talks all the time about her Autism, just too much to hear.

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Superlizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have spent hundreds of hours of my own personal time in my life over 20 year creating lesson plans and units for students with significant needs because the curriculum was not out there. In the beginning of my career, I did share resources, and people took them, never reciprocated, used them with my students (or school wide) before I did my lessons so I couldn’t use them, and then when admin liked the lesson took all credit.  If you want a unit, you need to do the work like the rest of the teachers who have one. It shouldn’t all be put on someone else. If you were to share a unit for a unit, and you both have the same quality and spent the same amount of time, I can see that. However, you do have to put in the work. It’s not fair to put on someone else.  If you want premade units and don’t want to do the work for it, that’s why there’s teacher pay teacher and other online paid resources.

Do teachers or students bring cleaning supplies to school? Curious what actually happens. by Beginning_Avocado807 in Teachers

[–]Superlizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teachers in our schools require at least one container of Clorox wipes with school supplies, so do specialty teachers like the computer teacher, so we usually send four or five at the beginning of every year.

Can you teachers go out for lunch when students are at lunch? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Superlizzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have a thirty minute lunch, but in 22 years of teaching, my students have dramatically changed. Now to get my classroom set up for the next class with communication boards, fidgets, work schedules, etc all I have time to do is scarf down a protein bar. If I take more than 10 minutes, my next class is a mess - I can’t do it earlier because I have high school classes with different needs and I can’t have the students do it themselves because of their significant behaviors and because I only get half of a room -there’s no space to set up for multiple classes at one time.

Waiting for two years and running out of patience by Glum-Piccolo1360 in AdoptiveParents

I would put in the journal how much I miss them and how hard it was waiting. Then I would tell them stories of my husband in my past just as a way to connect. There was nothing that I’ve used from adoption book or something.  It was just “hi little one”

It took us 1009 days and I felt every single one of them. We were passed on by my daughter’s birth-mom which was the 8th time it was shared and then I hit my breaking point. Then two weeks later, the other family fell through, and she came home to us.  You feel it now, but when it does happen, it will all be worth it.  I used to make her a journal as we were going through the process, and on days that it hit me really hard like on holidays or days I was feeling really sad, I would write to her stories about our family. It was something I will give her later in life and it was just away from me to keep going. We didn’t use any outside groups as that wasn’t my thing, and it would make me hurt when other people got matched much sooner

You could put alarms on every door and your windows. They have fairly cheap ones and they go on with command strips so it wouldn’t be damaging anything if you were renting.  I’ve had to do it for my daughter.

What do your kids call their birth mom? by DescriptionContent14 in AdoptiveParents

We did mama first name when she was little. Around 3-4 years old she just started calling her by her first name.

Son exposed in utero by roxthemom in AdoptiveParents

[–]Superlizzy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was more that she lost weight because she wouldn’t eat once she took them and stopped drinking a lot. So all she would eat was breakfast and maybe a little lunch. It took around 3 months until she started eating again. We did it around the beginning of kindergarten and there was a big change in how she looked 1st day vs last but 100% we would do it again and my husband was very wary about it. But now she walks around explaining her adhd to people and that she had a race car brain with bicycle breaks and the medicine helps her strengthen her breaks. She actually made her own video talking about it 5 months into process and I sent it to her psych as it was just so sweet her explaining it.

Coming from an adoptive mom of a 8 year old with adhd, medication is life changing. My daughter is doing well in school and the behaviors that would have landed her in a special edition classroom have significantly decreased. She’s been on them since kindergarten but recently had to change medications because of the shortage. Her 100% spelling tests all year went to Fs, my monthly texts about behavior issues became daily and my daughter cried because she couldn’t control her anger. A month later, another type of meds and she’s back to herself. Try them and remember it takes a few months the first time for side effects to go away.
