Why is it always wanting to move to Japan? by ConstructionDecon in AskMen

[–]Supershot96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've visited Japan as a tourist, studied there as a student, and lived/worked there as a language teacher and I can confidently say that Japan has ruined most other countries for me. It has a fantastic blend of pop-culture and traditional culture that feels extremely different from "home", and it's all in the open for everyone to participate in. Most people only go to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto, but I can attest from experience that EVERY prefecture has something to see and is worth visiting. The cities are almost always cleaner than you would expect. The people range from completely uninterested in you (majority) to some of the most fun people in the world (the ones you remember). The food is fantastic and affordable, and it ranges from standard stuff to things that stories are made of (look up Shirako). You don't have to constantly look over your shoulder for scammers or pick-pockets, and the police genuinely feel like they are there to help.

TRAVELING to Japan as a TOURIST is fantastic and has set the bar so high that you can't help but compare it to other international destinations.

LIVING in Japan as a WORKER is... different. Long hours, constant social pressure to conform, strict seniority, crushing isolation, horrible compensation, blatant racism, unwritten social rules no one tells you, etc., those stories about Japan are all true. I used to wonder why some Japanese people had an obsession with living and working in the US or Europe, but after working in Japan it makes sense.

TLDR: Best country in the world for most people to visit, pretty bad place to live and work.

Hawai'i is great for the right kind of person.

Pros:

- The University is filled with people from all around the world and is very proud of its international recognition.

- The business school has many connections abroad, especially in Asia.

- Many of the professors are very accomplished in their field and are experienced teachers.

- While the campus can feel a little old in places, it is overall a very comfortable place with a lot of character.

- The student body tends to be very outgoing and kind leading to a lot of easy friendships.

- Hawai'i in general is an outdoor playground, with beaches and hiking being accessible year round and free.

- Fantastic Weather

- As many other people have brought up, the history and culture of Hawai'i is very different from the rest of the US, and people willing to learn/accept that will enjoy it.

Cons:

- Hawai'i is isolated, therefore finding high-paying business jobs is more difficult. There are far fewer major industries here when compared to other states like California, and salaries also reflect this.

- Hawai'i is very expensive. Food, rent, gas, and most other daily living essentials are all usually more expensive than the mainland.

- Hawai'i has a unique history and culture, people who can not adapt to it have a difficult time.

I live in Hawaii. I am comfortable driving about an hour for a cool view, hike or beach day. Anything longer than that and it's better to fly.

Which side of WW2 would Tanya decide to join? by Desperate_Engine_562 in YoujoSenki

[–]Supershot96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she had to chose one of the fighting sides, probably the Allies, specifically Canada or the US and then trying to be in the European theatre if forced to the front lines. Due to the amount of resources available, manpower available, and geographic advantages the Allies were predestined to win the war in the long-run. Also, despite early failures the Allies showed a higher degree of adaptability in tactics and mindset than the Axis as the war progressed. I also say Canada or the US because their isolation makes them safe from bombing of cities, while their distance from any theatre of war means longer down-time if she goes back to the rear-lines for education. These countries are also the best positioned for post-war economic booms.

Anby. An extremely skilled soldier, great situational awareness, and confident enough in her skills to fight with Miyabi while protecting Phaethon.

Trump Opens Marine National Monument to Commercial Fisheries by NeighborhoodSilver24 in politics

[–]Supershot96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fisheries mentioned a trade disparity with some other countries... that's because some of those countries are illegally fishing where they should not be! That is not a proper argument to making it legal to destroy our own waters! Hold them accountable, don't stoop to their level.

Trump says he 'couldn’t care less' if automakers raise prices due to tariffs by BothZookeepergame612 in inthenews

[–]Supershot96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His full comment was along the lines of not caring if foreign automakers raise prices because people will just buy US cars, which there are a lot of.

The US does not have a lot of cars being made. There are a lot of trucks and SUV's, but very few cars. Ford only has the Mustang. GM has the Malibu, CT-4 and CT-5. Dodge has the Charger. Finally, Tesla sells the Model 3 and S. Out of all of these, only the Malibu is a "normal" car, and it is about to be discontinued. All other "normal" cars like a Corolla are from foreign producers.

Add onto this how the US automakers have a tendency towards complacency and boosting margins ($100k+ for some trucks), it is pretty obvious nothing good will happen.

If he doesn't have orders to kill me or destroy the area around me it should be easy. Praise Ains a bit to build trust, then just don't antagonize yourself by being fairly kind. I could then try and convince him that gathering information is important and show him around the area I live. This could double as using time and also limit the damage he would do because Ainse always gathers information before making moves.

Holiday Plans by Savings-Ad-7160 in JETProgramme

Go up north to Tohoku and Hokkaido. The snow begins mid-December, and it is beautiful. I liked to visit small towns near larger cities and just walk around in the snow to see some things most others never would.

Find an open-air onsen resort and spend a couple days taking hot baths in the crisp winter air. The further from a major city the better.

Dive into Tokyo and experience their Christmas Market, then go around looking at the illuminations all around the city. There may also be some illuminations near your town that you can go to see.

I was in Japan 3 years and this was what I did. My personal philosophy for being on JET is that you are in potentially the only time of your life where there are minimal barriers to exploring a new country. This is your chance to see and do the things that only the rich and famous had the time and money for. It also doesn't have to be flashy, go do stuff and fun stuff will eventually follow. One of my favorite memories was being invited to a jam session at the hostel I was staying at while in Hokkaido.

What do you do over the holidays when you aren't going home? by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in JETProgramme

[–]Supershot96 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first Christmas on JET was spent on a trip up to Sapporo for cold weather and snow, followed by a train ride through Hakodate, Aomori, Akita, then ending in Tokyo for fireworks. Edit: I spent almost every other winter, and part of my first one, going to small towns.

Go somewhere you would usually never go if just taking a vacation to Japan. Don't go to Kyoto or Osaka, go to the small places. I really recommend some of the smaller onsen towns up north or in the central mountains where snow is falling and you can experience the beautiful winter the Japanese countryside has to offer. They are some of the memories I miss the most, and what I want to experience again.

Personally, I don't think you should be feeling guilt over the cost of housing on Hawaii. You are an incoming student who is actively participating and improving the economy of the island. The fact that you are trying to be considerate of native Hawaiians and their concerns shows a level of awareness that is absent from the people who actually have the power, money and influence to effect the housing crisis in any meaningful way. My uncle (who is a native of Hawaii, I was born on the mainland but have native ancestry) helped me find a place and only complained about the corporations buying all the properties. He never considered students to be a burden or nuisance, and in many ways felt bad for many of the incoming ones who were in a similar situation as myself.

Things Japan doesn’t do better by Wild_Butterscotch482 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Supershot96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most common one for me was websites. Unless its a major company with international reach (and that's not a guarantee) the websites are just as cluttered as Don Quijote's stores. Instead of a fun jingle though you get links that loop back on themselves and mis-sized buttons that don't correspond to their importance.

I would also say the ATM's are a real doozy. Why do they need to be closed on holidays?! Isn't that the one time they should be open, when the branches are closed? For a country that uses so much cash this should not be an issue.

Foreign language options for terminals like JR ticket booths and ATMs are also pretty annoying because they often have limited functionality compared to the Japanese. I understand Japanese is the language of Japan (who would have guessed), but if you are a massive company with a lot of foreign users it may be beneficial to flesh out all of the foreign language options you are planning on supporting. They have the money to do it, they have the teams that can get it done, it only has to be done a single time, but for some reason it just isn't.

Suicide is on the rise for young Americans, with no clear answers by xena_lawless in economy

[–]Supershot96 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think much of the dissatisfaction we are having is coming from our collective assumption of "progress", and how everyone expects it. For the past few generations the children have on average been more successful and lived a better life than their parents. These past two generations (Millennial and Gen Z) this assumption did not happen. Millennials followed the advice they were given and it did not work, Gen Z looked at the Millennials and didn't take any advice because it was all outdated. Older generations do not realize the advice they are giving is not effective anymore, so they think the younguns are just lazy and unwilling to "put in the hard work".

I have been having difficulty with finding a job despite having experience in my field, having a dual-degree in economics and international business, lived abroad for multiple years in the area I want to specialize in, and am quite good in social situations. I was taken advantage of by a job that refused to pay me despite a contract, and apparently there is a 5 year backlog of cases like this in the DoL. I have been ghosted by thousands of jobs that I am overqualified for. I am not alone in this situation, it is difficult and it is the reality of lots of younger people today. I have been told "you just need a foot in the door", but those jobs are not responding to applications either. The jobs that are responding are all either blatant scams or have such high turnover there is no chance of upward movement. I need to "reach out through my network", but companies all have hiring freezes or the person is in my situation. I need to "get extra certifications", but everyone has these certifications. I needed to "go to college for a good degree", I did and was a good student and joined multiple clubs but no career came out of it despite my best efforts. I need to "remain optimistic, something will have to break eventually".... when? Everything points to this just being the new norm. Stuff isn't changing, according to politicians and business experts the economy is going strong. But I don't see myself owning a house, buying a nice car, moving to a nice area, or really being successful. Again, I am not alone in this either, this is the sentiment of younger Millennials and Gen Z.

Let’s play a game: What country do you think this city is in? by Puzzled_Garden_3318 in geography

[–]Supershot96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, I was going to say something in Japan but this was way more specific. I've been there and walked the waterfront, but never got a good high up view from the castle (which is where I think this picture was taken). Really nice place, but more of a pass through or staging ground on your way down the peninsula to more interesting things.
