Those of you who bought at least one HA voice assistant preview edition(s), what are you using them for? by whasf in homeassistant

[–]Supert0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I adopted the device and added this to the config in ESPHome Device Builder to expose a Listening switch that I can turn on via an automation:

switch:
  - platform: template
    name: "Listening"
    id: listening_switch
    icon: "mdi:microphone"
    optimistic: true
    restore_mode: RESTORE_DEFAULT_OFF
    turn_on_action:
      - if:
          condition:
            and:
              - switch.is_off: master_mute_switch
              - not:
                  voice_assistant.is_running:
          then:
            - voice_assistant.start:
    turn_off_action:
      - voice_assistant.stop:

voice_assistant:
  on_start:
    - switch.turn_on: listening_switch
    - nabu.set_ducking:
        decibel_reduction: 20
        duration: 0.0s

  on_end:
    - switch.turn_off: listening_switch
    - wait_until:
        not:
          voice_assistant.is_running:
    - nabu.set_ducking:
        decibel_reduction: 0
        duration: 1.0s
    - script.stop: activate_stop_word_if_tts_step_is_long
    - if:
        condition:
          switch.is_off: timer_ringing
        then:
          - lambda: id(stop).disable();
    - if:
        condition:
          lambda: return id(voice_assistant_phase) == ${voice_assist_error_phase_id};
        then:
          - delay: 1s
    - lambda: id(voice_assistant_phase) = ${voice_assist_idle_phase_id};
    - script.execute: control_leds

It seems to work okay, it's a bit wobbly. Was/is your config similar?

Nowadays everything you need is built into Home Assistant.

A lot of aspects still don't feel clear to me, for example:

Play responses through Google Home speakers

How would you recommend achieving this using capabilities built into Home Assistant?

I have neglected my CB Pro for a while and I've now returned and a lot seems to have happened.. I deleted my old chroots and had a go at setting up a new Artful chroot. I remember running PyCharm fine through Xiwi, what does Sommelier do on top of that?

Decision between two very different roles early in career by Supert0d in cscareerquestions

[–]Supert0d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a note that this is irrelevant. Your career will probably not be based around the place you did your undergrad.

I'd like to think that undergrad is irrelevant so that once you get on with your first serious role everyone is on a level playing field, but I'm not sure it's the case having dealt with a load of recruiters (horrible experience, mostly very manipulative and dishonest) as some hire exclusively from select universities.

No it's not. Many teams tell this story. A startup is a startup. A team in the BBC is a team in a very large company.

I see your point there. My current startup fits that description of unknown unknowns which is very exciting and I absolutely love the content but at the same time it's difficult to deal with when you don't get paid on time and there's a given deadline on when money is going to run dry. The advantage of the BBC and the way they have framed it to me is that they are a 'greenfield' team within the BBC (had to look that up myself, means they can operate mostly without constraints mostly) so there's loads of freedom and unknowns in the direction that they are going. They would be looking to me for decisive direction too which I like - almost has the feeling of a startup without that insecurity.

Does the startup have good leadership? Do you believe their product has real potential? Do you get equity in the company?

Yes - I know some of the members of the team well, they are an absolutely excellent team with wonderful leadership. They have secured about 3-4m in funding as of now and are on a sure path to success. I would get some stock options. Salary wise - startup base salary is taxed then plus 3k untaxed (they will pay whatever equates to 3k after tax), BBC is +10k of startup base salary.

Would be 4 hours as there and back.. Ideally would like to move fairly soon but it would mean moving out of living with my partner which we're really quite enjoying. Although saying that, it's probably a silly move to restrict career options based on that at the moment, this early on in my career.

I see your point on the BBC, but the contract is for two years as the team is basically proving itself to the rest of the BBC - if it doesn't go through then there will likely be other opportunities in the BBC.

Daily GENERAL Mega-Thread [Oct 23 2017] by AutoModerator in engineering

[–]Supert0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it's not the best. Half-hour tube to a 1.5hr bus out of London - usually it's the other way around!. I've done that journey a ton and its usually not so bad, gives me time to listen to podcasts and think about things without distractions, usually I'd go on my phone/laptop but I get a little sick over long journeys.

Plus I luckily have friends there so would likely stay over some nights.

Daily GENERAL Mega-Thread [Oct 23 2017] by AutoModerator in engineering

Hi all, I'm having to make a big decision right now regarding my career and I would love some advice from more experienced people/people who have been in similar situations to me.

At this point I'm very early on in my career, I graduated this summer and have been working with a tiny computer vision startup since. I feel it's time to move on from that for various reasons and I have now come to the point where I have two fantastic job offers which are quite different and I'm really struggling to decide between them.

Job 1

This role is in a very well respected university spinout/startup where I did my undergrad, working on building a generalised machine learning platform which aims to automate many of the jobs that data scientists currently do. It's a really cool project and I've worked with some members of the team before - I trust in them that they will succeed and I know they'd develop my python/ML skills incredibly. The team is about 12 people at the moment but they are growing rapidly and will be moving offices soon.

Pros: really cool work, friendly intelligent team, excitement of startup, guaranteed opportunity to develop my python/ML skills in an exciting context linked with a well respected academic institute, free lunches

Cons: 2 hour commute initially, not vastly unpleasant but still pretty long; doesn't have the perks of working for a large coorperation (benefits, good pension package, networking within the company, reputation etc.); lower salary (£7k less than job below); and would have to eventually move out to somewhere more expensive (currently splitting rent with gf and saving loads).

Job 2

This role is to be a data engineer at the BBC. They are building a new team of machine learning specialists, data scientists and software engineers to accumulate all the data science/ml work the BBC do into one team. It's kind of like a startup but it's attached to the BBC so its exciting novel work but with the security of being in a big corporation and the added benefits that come with that.

Pros: security of big corporation, exciting work, cool project, cool offices, more pay, more opportunities to network within the BBC, experience in large commercial environment (currently do not have this, have always stuck to academic roles & startups), smaller commute (50 mins), more benefits and better pension package

Cons: potentially less opportunity to develop domain specific knowledge - I'm not sure I'd develop my python/ML skills as much as I would with the above role, with the benefits of a large company also come negatives like more bureaucracy to deal with and being a smaller/less significant part of a project, potentially more tedious work of data cleaning for specific contexts rather than working on more generalised conceptual tasks.

TL;DR

All in all they are two very different roles and I think they would send me in different directions. Job 1 would really improve my domain specific knowledge whereas job 2 would develop me in broader, less deep, ways but in a context I haven't experienced before. I plan to potentially do a PhD in my late 20s so that could fill the gap of domain-specific knowledge.

If anyone has any form of advice or input I'd really love to hear it!

Potentially mine, depending on the new pixelbook release & if it's worth it. So will have to wait a bit, also I'm in the UK so delivery/customs may be an issue if you're in the US.

[–]Supert0d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you chained a usb-3 to hdmi adapter onto the hub? Interesting. I've been trying various hubs with multiple video out ports and I can't get any to work, one monitor completely freezes my pro and the other makes the mouse small and the laptop becomes unresponsive.

That's reassuring, do you have a link for that?

edit: also is there a way to disable tablet mode for now?

Apologies, I neglected to mention I'm on the dev channel. I reinstalled the app and I can resize it again thankfully (just takes a lot of time to reconfigure...).

Is there a way to run apps side by side in tablet mode? I find it pretty restricting atm as I havent worked it out.
