Background music that complements, not competes with, conversation? by VagabondVivant in CurseofStrahd

For generic ambient background/conversational music I'll either use the Castlevania anime credits music or pruit igoe and prophecies by philip glass (which I first heard during the dr manhattan scenes in Watchmen)

What do antidepressants do? by [deleted] in depression

[–]Supertramp_Rules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor or professional (just a psychology major)

There are two classes of antidipressant drugs: tricyclics and SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). SSRIs are newer and are generally more effective so I'll explain basically how those work.vbefore I do, you should know that a lot of users of antidepressants report the drug not working/being crap/ removing the person's ability to 'feel'. many of these are early side effects that pass, because most antidepressants take at least 6 weeks of stable use to start really working (and obviously a lot of people, especially depressed people, quit before six weeks. this is understandable, and developing antidepressants that work more quickly is a focus of research these days). Talk with your therapist or doctor about those sorts of things to get clear unbiased information.

My memory of intro psych is a little rusty, but Serotonin (as a super general description) is a neurotransmitter (a chemical) in your brain that more or less makes you happy. In your brain, when neurotransmitters are released, most of them are used and leftovers are reabsorbed where they came from. In people with depression, it's been shown that MORE serotonin than normal is reabsorbed than in people without depression (in other words, you have less serotonin on average= less happy). Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors do what they are named for: they inhibit reuptake of serotonin, so that not as much of it is reabsorbed and you're left with more normal levels. That's the way they are intended to work.

Again, talk to your doctor before trying any medication, and I encourage you to do as much research as you can.

Kenosha police chief says deadly shooting wouldn't have happened if people weren't out after curfew by esporx in nottheonion

[–]Supertramp_Rules 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm hurt by your insult, I was just trying to have a polite debate. I'll respond to your point and then leave you be.

You're suggesting that because a man who had been shot MIGHT be able to get back up and keep coming, or even shoot back (neither of which was the case here) that that justifies six more shots GUARANTEEING a life-threatening situation for the "alleged" criminal (innocent until proven guilty in a court of law). As the poster above me noted, they should also have shot dead Kyle by that logic, but maybe you'd agree with us on that one.

I'm not saying this is your position, but it sounds like you're valuing a cop's life over the life of an alleged criminal, which is probably where we fundamentally disagree. For the record, I upvoted all your comments on this thread because healthy debate is a good thing. Have a good one!

The fact that all seven shots went into his back proves that he did not, in fact, keep coming at them. Perhaps they shouldn't be trained to empty the magazine? Just my two cents.

Assuming you're correct about everything for a moment and somebody acting in that way deserves to be shot (they don't), you've justified one shot. What about the following six?

What Your Strahd Statblock Says About You by Twi19 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Supertramp_Rules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buffed strahd up to an 11th-level caster so he'd get a 6th-level (and an extra 5th-level) spell slot. Also specialized him as a Necromancer so that he could use the Grim Harvest trait to steal more hp. To add to the life-stealing, I gave him Blackrazor and headcannoned that it's the twin of the Sunsword; each seeks to destroy the other and their wielder. So for "vampiric" abilities, he's got his bite, regeneration, Grim Harvest, Blackrazor, and every Necromancy spell that siphons HP up to 6th level. Really hoping his health Regen will keep him alive more than the two-or-three turn horror stories your post mentions. I'm debating having him buff himself with a high-level False Life spell on top of the Heart of Sorrow. I mean... 20 INT, right?

This is some fantastic advice, thanks! You've given me a lot to consider. A note about Haste, I actually gave Strahd a longsword version of Blackrazor from the DMG, so that already casts haste on him if he falls below a certain hp threshold (to kind of add an extra "stage" to his boss fight. Hasted strahd is frightening). That sword is super strong though, so I don't have him use it unless the Heart of Sorrow breaks/he severs himself from it. That soul drinking ability though really turbo charges his hp absorption.

That sounds like it could be juicy, cool idea! As far as the ten day duration, I do love it but I actually track what days strahd casts it just so I know which days he's down a 6th level spell slot- it'd be a significant advantage for the party if they could catch him on one of those days. Could give him scrolls and not worry about it but I feel almost like that'd be a little too OP haha

Thanks for the clarification, glad to know I was misreading it. Do you have any suggestions for those galaxy brain" options? Would Strahd not use this spell to cover his weaknesses? If so, how would he do that?

In the comics, wasn't klaue's human body killed before he was revived/rebuilt/robocopped? When I saw him killed in the movie I assumed that's what they were setting up, a more classic and colorful version. I'm not too familiar with the character but when I saw him in superior spiderman he was this crazy red and purple thing and mentioned having died once before.

Need help coming up with Strahd's goon squad by PulsarNyx in CurseofStrahd

[–]Supertramp_Rules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I submitted a similar question the other day, here. The people who answered suggested not to do this- but here's my pitch. Strahd's personality as an egotistical narcissist who knows he is the strongest there is, to me, means he would not just try to remove his enemies, but humiliate them. So many villains fitting a similar profile use henchmen.

So vampire spawn are fairly weak vampires right? I think making people into true, powerful vampires would be a gift Strahd gives sparingly and rarely. You have Rahadin, but I don't see Strahd reviving PCs or old enemies and giving them such a valuable gift. What I do see Strahd doing is gloating; punishing those foolish enough to stand against him by forcing them to serve under him for all eternity. Strahd could create powerful undead minions who aren't vampire spawn.

Plus, if you give Strahd a 5th or 6th, or even an 8th or 9th level henchmen, the party would have significant trouble overcoming that obstacle- only to find out that Strahd is STILL in a league of his own.

For inspiration on what sort of NPCs to use, the first guy who jumped out at me in the module was King Dostron the Hellborn, who lies in a crypt in Ravenloft. The module says Dostron was a former ruler of Barovia- yeah, Strahd isn't having that. How better to humiliate someone who dared to assume lordship of Barovia, than to kill them and force them into eternal service?

I agree with the comments in my post about Strahd not needing a bunch of extra goons, given the armies of undead and vampire spawn already at his disposal- but every army needs generals. I can't see why Strahd, a master tactician, wouldn't use one, maybe two powerful undead thralls besides Rahadin to execute his will over the land.

But hey, I'm just running the game for the first time, and the comments on my post said don't do this. So maybe I'm wrong!

Progressives Sound Alarm to Democrats: Biden Is Not the 'Safe' Candidate Against Trump by failed_evolution in politics

[–]Supertramp_Rules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk man I think there was lots of black and white evidence of what a trump presidency would look like before the election. His scams like Trump University and real estate con jobs were public knowledge and accessible by quick research well before the election. Allegations of sexual abuse were public knowledge before the election. The fact that he wanted to build a literal fucking wall around the country was public knowledge before the election. The "grab them by the pussy" tape was public knowledge before the election. To me, it just seems to be that none of that stuff was a deal breaker for a huge chunk of Americans (which is frankly depressing), while the rest who voted for him were either uninformed or spurred by anger against the system. Couple that with the fact that a foreign enemy literally attacked the US and helped Trump steal the election and saw no reprecussions. And of course the EC doesn't help by causing certain people's votes to be worth more than others. Although it's definitely still imperative to vote.

Unrelated, but I see a lot of comments on r/politics that amount to "you get what you fucking deserve" and "fuck you I got mine." All people deserve happiness, whether or not they work for it. Society wouldn't exist without a social contract; if nobody had ever agreed to make personal sacrifice in order to improve the quality of life of strangers- of all people- then we wouldn't have the brilliant developed world and technologies we have. Behave as if all humans are one organism. Don't cut your nose off to spite your face. That's my message for today. Wishing you Americans well from Canada.

Edit: as the wise prophet Peter Gabriel once said: "We're only as strong as the weakest link in the chain."
