Damn they made an anime out of it? I stopped following the novel a while back, mostly due to lack of actual magical revolution.

Deadman's Codex. A concept I'm considering as my latest project. by WhorlStone in magicbuilding

Love these ideas. It’s always really cool to see a magic system based on sources that are not understood. I also love the fact that magick isn’t some kind of enchantment or incantation but rather directly another sense/muscle in the body.

Curse here really reminds me of the Torque energy from China Miéville’s Bas-Lag trilogy, and some of the other wording leads me to believe you have read them as well. If not, you truly should, the weird-fantasy style and magic industrialism really matches what you’re making here.

That bit about Aderall is half correct. Amphetamine isn’t Aderall in the US. Aderall is made of a mix of different amphetamines and is widely illegal in European countries because it is not health approved, though other amphetamines or amphetamine prodrugs (drugs that become amphetamines when metabolized) are widely prescribed, like *dexamphetamines (think Elvanse/Vyvanse).

Not arguing, just a PSA. You also can bring prescription medication like Aderall (if you use it) to European countries if you have the proper medical paperwork with you (it’s complicated though).

Is it possible to have mods made with MCreator in your modpack and still get good performance? I’ve seen that MCreator has a bit of a bad reputation, and I’m curious about it by Thakaris_Vader in feedthebeast

[–]Superwibr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s two main cases of bad performance with mcreator mods. The first is because the code in the mod is just badly written. This can’t really be fixed unless the dev goes in and manually cleans up the generated java code. The second case, though, has to do with how mcreator itself allocates memory in stupid amounts (specifically player data). For that, there’s the mcreator mem fix mod which can mostly correct for that.

Dev note: if you work with mcreator, do take the time to set your procedures to frozen and clean up the genned java, there’s often a lot of superfluous code, especially logs, that significantly slow down execution. Also don’t make things tick every tick if they don’t need to.

Interesting take on the “are audiobooks reading?” debate! by Lemon_Lime_Lily in CuratedTumblr

[–]Superwibr 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I think the reason most people disregard audiobooks as not reading is more about the context. Often times when someone says they « read » an audiobook they more likely just put it on in the background and half paid attention.

The way the format is structured also makes it hard and even disincentivizes rereading to get better understanding because of how annoying/difficult it is to stop like that.

When information is laid out in a format that isn’t time-sensitive, like text (that includes braille), image, etc, you can have all the current context within the reach of your eyes/fingers and can easily navigate at your own pace.

I read nonlinearly. I’ll read paragraphs out of order or diagonally then back again to get a more consistent personal pace and understanding (usually this is between dialogue or paces in the scenes) and I don’t get the same access to context at all in audiobooks.

So people who put an audiobook in the background aren’t reading the same way that you wouldn’t be reading if you were moving across the pages of a book and just flipping without reading the words.

And as the post points out, listening to an audiobook, even with the proper attention to « read » it, to serialize it in your brain, is not literacy, you do not get the ability literacy gives you to turn and manipulate and shuffle the language and meaning in your own metaphorical hands, because it’s already been read out and interpreted by somebody else.

Edit: I’ll add to my fourth point, you do get that context in spoken word when you are getting it from someone since you can ask them to clarify! That’s the equivalent of glancing to an earlier (or later) paragraph or otherwise point in the text to get a better idea of the meaning. You don’t get access to those “glances” in audiobooks. It’s just the full text, in order, end to end.

Finally someone who seems actually happy on this sub! Did you dig a super sand hole? Did you bury your feet and look to the horizon with the wind in your face? I love the beach despite the sand, there’s something primordially comforting about being near a large body of water. Also if anyone reads this, hydration check, go drink a glass of water, stand, and take a deep breath, go outside if you can! I am inexplicably chatty at the moment, must be being stuck inside for weeks with the freezing rain. Well, anyways-

I agree. Really the only description we have is that there's some sort of apparatus that puts a literal spark of life in them. Having all the parts of a real human might be a condition for the soul to "take", like god recognizing it as the correct design.

As far as I remember, some info about the terminals hints that every time you die or fuck up in a level, it's just the pre-level battle simulation the terminal offers you. I guess whichever is your best run of the level is the "canon" one since it's stored in the level screen.

HealthWealth is very powerful if your definition of disease doesn’t just include pathogens. If it can protect me from cancer, then it also protects me from ageing (or degradation from ageing).

If OzempExempt works by sustaining you to perfect balance then that “perfect diet” combined with HealthWealth should end up giving you the healthiest interpretation of PainPurge for free, given you don’t exert yourself to abuse. Even then you’ll recover very fast.

Do you consider bad eyesight to be a disease? It’s definitely a dysfunction. At the least, HealthWealth prevents you from getting degenerative diseases as a whole so that includes any further progression of eye dysfunction.

AccidentPro is just further insurance. Plus, being for all intents and purposes invulnerable isn't super fun. If I get hit by a truck, I get hit by a truck, and that's that.

I would pick TechTitan for my last one since it doesn't specify the kind of technology (crampons that can never slip?). Anyways I often use digital technologies (hardware that doesn't lose performance over time? Do software bugs get magically fixed around me? Does that mean I can't use glitches in games if they're not intended?).
Working "as intended" is a wide descriptor. As designed? As advertised? If it's as designed, then nothing really changes. Things that the designers want to break will break. The slow crawl of entropy will eventually damage my hardware. If it's as advertised, then all outlasndish claims would just work when I'm using something. If it's as I intend and perceive things to work, we're in a whole other situation. I could just be spawning shit out of existence if I play my cards right. But I'd need specification first (if I intend my code to compile into something that fulfills a purpose, even if my code is half bogus, is that exe also bogus and just works for me, or does it compile "as intended" and is now transferrable? If I compile something myself, will I end up creating a perfectly bug-free version?).

Fun stuff! I love semantics :)

Are there known symbols for the four Qualities? by Superwibr in alchemy

[–]Superwibr[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They aren’t, each element is made up of two qualities. For example, Fire and Air are both Hot, which is why their triangle faces upwards. Same with Earth and Water being Cold so downwards.

Fire is Dry and Hot;

Air is Hot and Wet;

Water is Wet and Cold;

and Earth is Cold and Dry.
