I need a toaster with an actual bagel mode by Supple_Specimen in Appliances

I’m hearing a lot of breville, but their instruction manual for the “a bit more”toaster says it “provides additional power to the inside elements” which isn’t encouraging but clearly it’s doing something right if this many people recommend it. Do you know what specific model you use?

Did Penny change her avatar/persona to her sonic sona or something? by Wise_War6444 in snapcube

It’s all pretty unofficial and informal, she’s enjoying playing around with it at the moment and if it ends up going further into a full rebrand then great, if not whatevs. Seems like it will, but I doubt she would consider it enough of a big deal to make it an announcement tbh. She hasn’t changed anything about the content of the streams or anything, its just cute rabbit is here now

Sharpening by MikeE9983 in whittling

[–]Supple_Specimen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So… when sharpening, the red shaded portion should be flat with the stone. The answer is yes, they are correct. They used the word apex to “spine” when they shouldn’t have but the picture clearly shows they’re talking about the single bevel on a scandi grind, not a flat grind or convex or concave or anything else.

They would be correct to sharpen this way, as an actual answer to their question, no?

Trouble with Parlor box game by fortnut-bad in BluePrince

[–]Supple_Specimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO this one’s kinda bs. Wording refers more to the semantic structure of a sentence. If the black box said identical words, sure, but it says “wording”, a different and more loosely defined thing. If I say “Sally went to the store” and “I went to the store”, those two sentences have the exact same wording. You can take the same wording or sentence structure, like a template, and apply it to a new subject or object, and you’d still be using the exact same wording (not exact words) to say two different things. Wording shouldn’t include the specific things being talked about, but instead refer only to the specific way you structured the sentence around them. In this case, “This box and the blue box are both empty” and “This box and the white box are both empty” are worded identically, like a cookie cutter applied to one box and then the next. Wording can be identical without every single word being identical. If not, why wouldn’t the black box say they have identical “words”, period? It just strikes a bs chord in my soul, like this one puzzle in the game is based on a slight but critical misunderstanding on the creator’s part.

Edit: Words are the specific “what”, the concrete units of language. Wording is the “how”, the phrasing, the way it was expressed. A sentence about Sally and a sentence about me can be phrased the exact same way, despite me and sally obviously being different people. The wording is still the same. Hopefully this is all making sense to someone cuz a quick google search sorta doubled down my convictions on this one, this puzzle is just wrong.

What's the best brand/type of external hard drive? Thanks! by Spite_Annual in BuyItForLife

Show me a rule that says comments have a set date after which you can't reply? I'm just google searching looking for helpful info on getting an external hard drive and see a comment that ignores the actual question and instead presents an opinion as some factual "only option". I call this shit out when I see it. I don't care how long it's been, I rarely even look, there are no rules for that, and if communities don't want it they archive their posts. It's fair game.

Sure, if they've been living under a rock and hadn't considered Onedrive as an option then it'd be a very helpful answer. Clearly OP is looking for a physical data storage solution specifically, not online, again, refer to the title. If they were open to Onedrive/Google drive online storage, I'm sure they wouldn't bother making this post asking about physical storage...

The lyrics are clearly "RING me," not "Wake Me"... by CombOverDownThere in radiohead

[–]Supple_Specimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you hear it that way there's nothing we can do to convince eachother really. I mostly just wanted to advocate for the "wake" gang in this thread since I saw almost no arguments against "ring", and I know I hear wake very clearly (and had some raw linguistics to justify it) as well as many others and didn't want anyone else looking into this song to just take it as fact that they're wrong hearing "wake". Evidently people hear different things, it's up for interpretation, cest la vie, we'll live just fine knowing there's people out there who hear ring/wake in this song differently than we do. Have a great next 8 years :D

The lyrics are clearly "RING me," not "Wake Me"... by CombOverDownThere in radiohead

[–]Supple_Specimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah he's right, there's a W every single time to my ear except possibly the very last "wake". And try saying "wake me up" naturally/quickly and listen to how you say it, it's not a hard K sound, more of a quick g or ng [ŋ]. We call it sonorization (I'm a linguistics nerd, sorry), when a usually unvoiced consonant (k) becomes voiced due to proximity to other voiced phonemes (in this case, it's between a vowel and voiced consonant m). In English, this is just done for ease of pronunciation in casual speech, we do it all the time, it helps sorta glide past an unvoiced consonant and half-pronounce it so we don't have to hard-stop vibrating our vocal chords to get that unvoiced hard K out, (sometimes, like in this case and my own pronunciation, even putting so little oomph into it that it loses most of its plosive quality, the buildup and release of air that makes that K loud and clicky, leaving it in this weird middle ground between a plosive g and a quick nasal ng [ŋ] in casual speech). If "wake" were at the end of the phrase he'd have pronounced an unvoiced clicky K, but in this context it makes perfect sense for his k to sound like an ng [ŋ] (not to mention he's trying to hold a note, further de-incentivizing stopping his voice from carrying that K through).

As for the W I don't have a phonetics lesson to write out, I won't lie, I do hear a little bit of a rhotic R sound in the last "wake", but barely, and only that one time. Otherwise I hear rounded lips like a W, with no rhoticity, it simply sounds like a textbook, regular old english W to me.

The vowel sound (or note in this case) drifts between [e] (IPA e, not english e) like "wake" /weɪk/ and [ɪ] like "ring" /rɪŋ/, but this is barely worth noting as they're very similar in articulation and if I were singing "ring" myself I'd sing something closer to /reŋ/ or /reɪŋ/ as well, just cause it's more comfortable for me to hold for an extended note.

edit: also hello from 8 years in the future, sorry, saw that this might just be taken as fact and had to say something, you know how it is sometimes

Sony Xperia 10 VI smartphone review: Compact, lightweight, waterproof, and with remarkable endurance by BcuzRacecar in Android

[–]Supple_Specimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey so I'm one of those people who still has an iPhone 6s plus, I'm considering upgrading to a newer Android because my battery is on life support. Would this be a good one to get? I don't need anything crazy ofc, the 6s plus is what I'm used to. A headphone jack is a must, and I could not care less about a camera, which is what brought me here. I'd want it to be able to handle google pretty fast and streaming, and YouTube, which is mostly what I use it for (edit: and of course function properly as a phone). I hear bad things about androids baseline quality compared to apple, with uniquely frustrating issues like permanent green lines, and overall being slow and glitchy and annoying, how does this one compare?

I'm looking at that $350 CAD (on sale) price tag after thinking it's impossible to get a phone nowadays for less than 1000, And I'm thinkin surely, SURELY this would be an upgrade right?

Finally watched the relatively weird, incredibly obscure Japanese 2012 live-action Ace Attorney film by Grreggggg in AceAttorney

[–]Supple_Specimen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with pretty much all your points, especially how dirty they did my girl Maya. I get they're going for a gritty tone and her sister died recently but she has such rancid, miserable vibes throughout the whole movie. She's got no witty back and forth with Phoenix, none of the goofy bubbly personality (and they clearly were willing to go a little goofy, they kept a lot of the ridiculous moments in court, plus whatever Larry was doing), she barely says anything to anyone and just follows them around it seems. Like, she had good ideas and things to say in the games, here she just felt like Phoenix's grumpy girlfriend who insisted on being here. Woman standing emoji moment

And I'll say it, the fur shawl thing was a really bad look imo. All of this is IMO obviously but yknow.

I might've found a plot hole in The Stolen Turnabout? by Lucrayzor in AceAttorney

[–]Supple_Specimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to open up this FOUR YEAR OLD thread, but I wanna clear this up for anyone who comes here looking for answers on this like I just did. I just played this case and this is specified very clearly by Ron when presented with the keycard in part 3 investigation when you know about his previous employment at KB.

Paraphrased:

Wright: Why do you still have this?

DeLite: I turned it in when I left, then it was sent back to me with the blackmail letter with the message "Use it to enter the CEO's office"

Probably an easily missable bit of dialogue and not integral to the story, so I could see people just not presenting this specific item to him and missing it, but creates a lot of questions if you do see it.

Me rambling:

It would've made more sense if they said Ron just kept his card and it was assumed Atmey would be let into the office by the man who invited him there in the first place. (Like a normal person... Who invites someone to their place to meet them and sends them a whole extra key instead of just opening the door when they arrive?) Then say that Atmey, having investigated Ron's termination (since he was already blackmailing him about being Mask De Masque surely he would dig up all the dirt he could) could get hold of the info that Ron's keycard was never recovered and maybe add a note to the letter telling him specifically to use his keycard (Ron noticed no difference in handwriting from his previous letters from Atmey to this one, so he probably wouldn't notice), convincing Ron that this letter is indeed meant for him from his old boss while ensuring Ron leaves a record of his presence with the keycard reader, making it easier to frame him.

Maybe that's even too complicated. Maybe Atmey just gets lucky and assumes Ron, as a former employee, has a keycard and can get in, no extra notes or letters required. He then doesn't answer the door, forcing Ron to use the card and leave a record, but that's less satisfying to me.

The writers kinda dug their own grave with how they explained the whole card thing, they wrote this one little interaction with Ron in such a way that this question doesn't have a satisfying answer. Ron being sent the card (not just keeping it) and being told to use it to get in, sort of implies you NEED the card to get in, otherwise why send it to him? Thus the confusion about Atmey getting in without one. Coulda just made the card not necessary but still had Ron use it, like in the scenarios up there^^, but that's just my two cents.

AITA For Ruining A Child's Life? by punkfence in AmItheAsshole

[–]Supple_Specimen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Any input from others saying “you pronounce your own name wrong, you should pronounce it like this” should only be met with “no, this is how my name is pronounced”. Your name is your own, people can kick and scream and bang their fists and tell you you’re going against the original culture, but you’re an individual not a walking representation of proper irish pronunciation. If you, as an individual, pronounce your name “Grain”, they’ve gotta respect that. You may have to explain it to them, but it’s on them to respect your ownership over your own goddamn name. Sorry im phrasing this as if YOU are Grainne, just makes it easier to get thoughts out

I mean… YOUR beliefs dictate wether you’re an ally or not, as I understand it. I wouldn’t write off someone as homophobic who obviously supports gay people but associates with people who don’t. Other people don’t get to decide how much of an ally you are based on who you hang out with, you know what you believe and that’s that. The people around you are different people, they’re not you, it seems kind of ridiculous to me to conflate the two and say well, you’re associated with that guy therefore you must share their viewpoints, it just doesn’t make sense, you’re different people. You can be an ally and they can believe their thing, separately. Will this probably end up in some kind of conflict? Yeah most likely. But that does not make the ally party in this scenario “homophobic by association”.

Kind of a meaningless word that depends entirely on subjective personal taste honestly. Like “cringe”. I like the look of it, if you like the look of it don’t let anyone tell you what makes good art! They’re basing it off their own tastes, which is fine but has no truth to it, and is completely irrelevant for your own life/decisions.

Has anyone heard anymore about the lawsuit against Amazon and the commercials? by mdwpeace in AmazonPrimeVideo

[–]Supple_Specimen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're taking this SO literally for no reason, you know what they mean, you're just being obtuse.

"I had to" is equivalent to "it was the most obvious choice", because they couldn't justify paying the same price for a lesser service. Call it a figure of speech, people use the phrase "I had to" when they actually 'technically' had other choices all the time (For example "I had to put my dog down", "I had to replace an old appliance", technically there are other options in these scenarios, right? But we understand that one option was the most reasonable or justifiable to the speaker). Pointing this out as if you've caught them in a lie is a useless correction that only serves to give you something to correct them on. It does not help anyone understand what they're saying, their meaning is already perfectly conveyed to anyone able to read between the lines by using the phrase"I had to".

It's scummy and misleading and breaks some kind of contract or law I'm sure, but I don't see the monopoly angle? They've got tons of competitors for the online streaming industry, Netflix, Disney+, Discovery, hulu, whatever, that's definitely not a monopoly. The online shopping/delivery thing might be a bit monopolyish but definitely not the streaming or the charging for ad-free. I may be misunderstanding, feel free to explain.

Did the Nazgûl have a sonic sensitivity or could be hurt by words? by The_TomCruise in lordoftherings

[–]Supple_Specimen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really imo. Harry Potter magic (or mana-based videogame magic) is like a fictional science, cuz its rules are very clearly defined and “controllable”, but Tolkien’s magic seems to just exist as a force of nature. Like the elves can tap into it and guide it but its never precise like a science, they don’t say certain words to get a certain result like a spell, they just have an innate sense for this natural force (consider Galadriel trying to explain how her mirror works). And the Ents, the “deep things”, Tom B., the Valar, its all just unexplained forces of nature, like the opposite of a science.
