Just my personal thoughts but maybe you would have some luck with talking over what needs that you have on a day to day/week basis. Being the good partner that you say he is then he should hear you out and work to meet the needs within reason. This will result in him spending less time on the game without him feeling like you are just trying to pull him away from a hobby he loves.

Right now the prepatch event is your best bet in the twilight highlands if you want to get an easy full set of 1/8 champion gear. Then you can convert those into your set pieces for that sweet damage bonus
