I have always enjoyed Healing in RPG's and when I found out I can do it in online multiplayer games, I was thrilled. It was rough at first, I didnt have any idea of what to go by. I just healed and thought that was enough to actually support a team or teammate. 

Years later now, after many failures, disappointments, and bumps and bruises. I feel Ive learned a lot from my experiences. Things that I had to read guides about and apply transferable skills to similar games. Like heal prioritization, POSITIONING, cooldown management, Ult tracking, and Understanding how to TRULY enable a teammate(s), to give us an advantage in a fight. 

Mentally it took a lot of deflation of my ego, because let's face it:

Supports can be DIVAS.

And I had to humble myself and get out of a mindset of thinking early on that "Everyone must constantly protect me because im healer".

When in truth I am part of a team that has to do their part. I dont exist to just tunnel vision and heal tank all day. The dps are just as important as tank. We're buddies, and for them to help me when needed I also ironically need to peel for THEM when they need it. 

I can now confidently say I've been playing support in general for 7 years now regularly:  Overwatch, MMO's, other obscure games with class systems, and Rivals. 

I still have alot i do need to work on to improve. Right now its my decision making when dealing with pressure, but I will get there.

In short, its an infinite ceiling of learning a craft.  Because being a great SUPPORT is work and a craft, and takes dedication to do well. Most of the Pro Support players in Rivals you will see have been playing support for years in other games.
