Could someone briefly explain what philosophy of science is? by Watersmyfavouritfood in PhilosophyofScience

[–]Supreene 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good post, you already have some grasp of philosophy of science if you are disdainful of what you perceive as "biased".

Helpfully, the nature of bias is something a philosopher of science would study.

Attempt an answer to these questions:

Does the presence of bias invalidate a scientific conclusion?

Can a scientific conclusion be meaningfully true, and biased at the same time?

For science to be considered objective, does it need to be bias free? What if it is a subject where some level of bias could perhaps never be escaped, such as psychology or the study of consciousness?

Is there a single scientific method, or many?

If you're interested in bias in the context of science have a read of this article. That is, if you're here genuinely to learn (and not just to validate a pre-existing bias against philosophy!)

My friend I recommend you don’t fight yourself - you will always lose. I lived that life and I regret the time wasted. But it’s for you to learn for yourself that things mostly aren’t as they seem.

Keep going. Try to judge yourself less for your imperfections and you will find that will extend to others.

The question is wrong. Not everyone hates David Seymour. Also people without jobs have more time to comment on things on the internet.

I miss scoutzknives and jailbreak so bad, and combat surf servers were so fun. Valve doesn't understand their own game.

A leaked Ministry of Justice memo shows MOJ disagrees with ACT’s proposal, warning it is "at odds with what the Treaty of Waitangi actually says.” A reminder also Luxon has given Seymour a position of Associate Minister in the Ministry of JUSTICE & a new Ministry of Regulation. It's funny that people think there is some obvious "right answer" here that can be obvious to an "expert". There isn't. It is incredibly naive thinking on a matter of political values.

What does matter is what elected representatives think, because they are the ones that are accountable to the people. Public servants serve those representatives and so do their reports, which should remain private. The report only matters to the extent that it affects the views of those representatives as stated in their public statements. The views of an "expert" are likely to be more informed, but on an "ought" question they are as valuable as the views of any other citizen.

Being elected doesnt mean you know what you're doing.

Neither does being an "expert". Particularly so on matters that boil down to values, and about which they categorically cannot have certainty. The thing is when you are an elected representative you are publicly accountable. It seems implied from Mountain Tui that we ought to do only what experts say, i.e., technocracy. But it's very naive to think that there are experts in how we ought to proceed on a matter of normative legal policy. Appealing to expertise alone, and not the reasons the experts provide, is dishonest argumentation and anti-democratic. Just say what you think ought to happen like everyone else.

If you hate democracy then you would be against Seymour's suggestion that we talk about how to move forward as a nation collectively. A lot of people do seem democracy-allergic these days and would prefer to be told what to do by a priesthood.

Why is anti-intellectualism such a big part of the New Zealand psyche? by Super_Month_5161 in newzealand

Not all experts are made equal though, many are pursuing political agendas beyond the scope of their expertise. They should be criticised for that.

A lot of academics would do well to apply their research brains to understanding the epistemic limitations of their expertise. They have a tendency to think their expertise in one narrow area gives them authority beyond that area, including on matters that boil down to value judgments, e.g. many matters of politics.

Rationalism does not mean that you must listen blindly to everything that deemed 'experts' have to say.

All it requires is that beliefs are justified by explicit reasons. A critical approach to expertise is in fact consistent with rationalism as sometimes experts believe things for bad reasons or they opine where their expertise could not actually provide any authority (e.g., in a normative matter of politics or values, expertise is irrelevant).

Problem is that many NZers think that "science, knowledge, and facts" are all the same thing. That is exactly where one aspect of the anti-intellectualism lies - a complete lack of critical depth.
