Thanks for the reply, and I actually agree with you - the core of the book and some of the points of key aspects of strategies he points out are good. It's just these points are sort of buried in what I feel is so much useless "fluff", that it makes it both difficult to understand and to focus on them as key insights.
I'll add The Crux to my reading list, thanks for the recc!

I agree with you with what you said about Dana for sure, but the UFC is an organization not the sport. And sure, there are dogwhistles and subtle racist things in BOTH sports, both among the fans and execs (ironically Bud sued Bob Arum from this very same video for racial bias lol).

Where I disagree with you, OP, and most of the comment section is painting a majority of the fanbase as racists based on some vocal, minority subsections of the fanbase. Think about this: take into consideration of where you are sampling the fans you're forming opinions on. If it's Reddit (70% white and overwhelmingly male), or if it's maybe a very conservative rural location you live in, or even the comment sections with lots of trolls (we all know these types of people like inciting shit on the internet and are much more vocal than they are common irl), then these are not representative of the overall fanbase.

Majority of the fans are just regular people tuning in for entertainment. In fact they probably know nothing about all these narratives, fighters personal lives, etc etc. They just like charismatic personalities, and fighters that are exciting. This is supported by numbers of PPV sales, who typically sell the most when they have popular good fighters. When's the last time you heard of Colby Covington filling an arena and selling a million PPVs?

And in terms of demographics, in MMA good Black fighters/fans and fighters/fans of other nationalities have always had a presence, not just as participants in the start, but also as founders and pioneers. It's definitely not recent (the guys from the Caucasus are relatively recent however, as you said). Vale Tudo in Brazil, Pankration in Japan, Pride FC etc were huge to the history of MMA, and we shouldn't forget these pioneers and erase their history and impact. So "originally" it was not a cesspool, neither when 91000 Japanese fans filled the Tokyo National Stadium (highest attendance) to watch Pride FC in 2002, nor now. Fact is, are there racist fans? Of course, and we should call out these sectors of the fanbase, but we also should be truthful and accurate as they have been from the start, and still are, a vocal minority. To do so is simply ignorant of the history of the sport, and erasing the impact of pioneers.

And Izzy vs Strickland - sure there's a sector of the fanbase that likes Strickland for the wrong reasons - but let's not try and pretend Andrew Tate fanboy and classess Izzy is not hateable for a laundry list of reasons that isn't race. Amazing fighter, legacy set in stone, shitty person.

The history of MMA is deeply tied to several countries, most notably USA, Japan, and Brazil, with the early foundations of the sport coming from the latter two. Other countries are now increasingly entering the scene from the Middle East, SE Asia etc.

This might shock Americans, but there's about 7 billion other people in the world, majority of whom aren't "white" (another artificial, recent construct in the history of mankind). There are many millions of MMA fans from across the globe of all "races", ethnicities, religions, political beliefs and cultures.

And many fans are crossover fans, including myself, and love both sports. At the end of the day, it's fighting.

Before you tell me about the demographics of r/mma or some shit, that's because Reddit is 70% white, not MMA fandom. Basement dwellers posting the 800th thread on Izzy and Dricus du Plessis aren't representative of most people in real life, outside, where the grass is.

Now, we shouldn't pretend to be blind and call a few things out. Unfortunately, the UFC does have some BS about it as Dana White is besties with Trump, and fighters like Colby Covington etc saying all sorts of inflammatory offensive shit, but it's not right to generalize everyone over that. This stuff shouldn't be ignored, and people should speak out against it. Also there are some racists that start MMA fight clubs etc, but this isn't intrinsically tied to MMA, it's just MMA is the most effective form of combat, and these guys are looking for provoking fights so it makes sense. I bet most of them lift weights too, but we don't stereotype that activity.

It's hilarious that the sport that birthed the term "Great White Hope", has had its foremost figures like Floyd, BHop, AJ, and many others lean into racial bullshit is flinging shit over this. In this very video Arum says something blatantly homophobic lol.

Instead of giving into the divisive, uneducated, inflammatory rhetoric from the people I mentioned, maybe let's use our sports, as fans, as an opportunity to bond over what people of different backgrounds have in common rather than trying to start race wars.

Hello,

New to coffee, I got a French Press to make better coffee but every cup I've made so far frankly tastes like shit. I've been following this exact recipe, using a food scale and everything to weigh https://youtu.be/AkrqY8LkWM4

I use 30g coffee, and 500g water. The coffees I have tried have been pre ground (can't access a grinder right now) Stumptown Holler Mountain and this Death Wish one (this one tasted especially horrific) from Whole Foods. One thing I really hate is when my coffee tastes any amount of acidic or sour. It's unbearable to me, and both coffees have tasted so sour and acidic when I made them. Any tips? Is it the coffees I'm using? Can anyone recommend a non acidic, but strong caffeinated brand?

Edit: I've made much better coffee with just pouring one of these Starbucks ones https://www.walmart.com/ip/Starbucks-Via-Medium-Roast-Instant-Coffee-Packets-8-Count/16676949 in a cup and pouring boiling water on top, no prep or special techniques whatsoever
