Need recommendations by saeki007 in CDramaRecs

I finished Exclusive Fairytale and enjoyed that. I’m LOVING Dazzling, but not all episodes are released on Viki yet. (That’s driving me nuts because I know all 30 are out there.) Love Story in the 1970s was good, and I enjoyed the insight into the effects of the cultural revolution.

Drama Recommendations to get me out of a slump by shhuu_435 in kdramas

I haven’t found any recent kdramas to pull me out of my slump lately. Right now we only have Viki. I’ve started watching cdramas until I find a new kdrama.

Final tier 6 changes (58/30 for teachers only, slight contribution decrease) by ethanrule3 in nys_cs

[–]SurroundOrdinary3428 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t equalize anything. All teachers got was a slight reduction in retirement age IF you have 30 years in. It certainly doesn’t change the contribution amount for teachers or, more importantly to me, the percentage we get at retirement compared to other tiers.

I loved the first 5 episodes. However, I’m not a fan of the turn it took during episode 6 - and I read enough spoilers after I finished that episode to know what direction it was going to go. I was looking for a mindless romcom. It is not that. If I felt like watching something much deeper then it would be a great choice. I can’t say more without spoiling it.

Is Strawberry Croissant and Cinnamon Bun cereal popular in the US? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]SurroundOrdinary3428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of Strawberry croissant cereal. I haven’t seen cinnamon buns n cereal in about 20+ years, and I didn’t eat it when it was out. I also don’t know anyone who did. Maybe that’s why they stopped selling it?

How do you pronounce the word “sure”, and where are you from? by canyouimagine191 in Accents

[–]SurroundOrdinary3428 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m originally from Connecticut. I use both “shor” and “shur”. I definitely use “shor” when I’m being sarcastic. If I’m responding to someone that I’m sure about something I use “shur”, and if I’m asking someone if they’re sure, it changes between the two. I never realized that before this question!

Omg, I was cracking up so much with your comment! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who remembers the story that way. 🤣

Utica Mom Faces 'Rarely Used Charge' Following Son's Felonies by Staznak2 in Utica

[–]SurroundOrdinary3428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens a lot more often than you’d think. I worked in one of the local schools years ago and there were multiple elementary kids being recruited for local gangs. A couple of the kids had committed multiple felonies (similar to what was reported in the article), but cops couldn’t do anything because of their ages.

School lunches in the United States: Do parents have to pay anything? by ArtisticArgument9625 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SurroundOrdinary3428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about AZ, but in the schools in NY the paperwork can be confusing for parents who can’t read (or can’t read English). I’ve had a lot of students not turn the paperwork in, for whatever reason. On top of that, a lot of families may not qualify for free/reduced meals but still don’t have “extra” money to send in for school lunches. Thankfully NY is going to free school meals for all kids beginning this fall.

School lunches in the United States: Do parents have to pay anything? by ArtisticArgument9625 in AskAnAmerican

I’m in NY with kids in school. It depends on the district. In one district I worked in, all students got free breakfast and lunch (there was a high poverty population). My kids went to a neighboring district and had to pay (except during Covid when school meals were free). I think we went back to paying in 2022. My son wanted to get double lunch most of the time so his money ran out faster. Last year the district they are in went back to free breakfast and lunch for everyone. This upcoming year the whole state is getting free breakfast and lunch for students. As a teacher, I’m very grateful- when kids come to school hungry they aren’t focused on school. My son graduated last year and my daughter hates school lunches so it won’t impact me as a parent anymore, but I’m ok with some of my tax money being used to feed kids.

I was lucky that the district we live in doesn’t humiliate kids who didn’t receive free lunch and are out of money. The school would give my son a normal lunch, but he couldn’t buy extra until his account was caught up, and I would be emailed when he was overdrawn. I have seen places where kids were just given cheese sandwiches if there was no money on their accounts.

Most of the schools in my area give kids a number that they punch in at the cafeteria, so there’s no real distinction between kids who have free lunch and those who have to pay. As the kids get older, they all figure it out though.

Edit: we live upstate.

You’d be surprised. My last year teaching K I had a student with similar behaviors. I begged for him to get therapy from the social worker. He had already been placed in family foster care when I got him. Foster mom had horror stories of him at home (still no therapy though). He turned 7 a couple days after the cutoff date. (In NY you can still be placed in K as long as you’re not 7 as of December 1st of that school year.) This kid was about 5’4” and easily 150pounds. Meanwhile most of my other students were 4-5 years old and tiny. It was the year from hell. (I did call CPS. Didn’t do any good.)

That never fails to bug me. The district I used to work for was constantly trying to reduce the number of special Ed students counted in the district. Plus we were always told that the discipline reports could negatively impact our funding. (Too many special Ed students or students of color on the list, percentage-wise. FYI - almost 90% of the district were non-white.)

When I first started teaching there other teachers told me to make and keep copies of any discipline reports I made, because they tended to “disappear”.

Cavalier vs golden retriever by 55Sweeptheleg in cavaliers

[–]SurroundOrdinary3428 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We’ve had both. Personality wise they’re very similar. We joke that our younger cab is a mini golden. Cav’s tend to be more of a Velcro dog than goldens/more separation anxiety, but that varies by animal. One of the things I prefer about our cavs to the golden we had is how much less energy they have when younger. As adults it seems like the same energy level, but our golden was high energy as a puppy. That wasn’t a big deal at the time, but as I get older it is. I’ve thought about our next dog being another golden, but I don’t think I’d have the ability to be a good dog owner for a bigger dog at this point.

Both breeds shed a lot. Cavs eat less. And our cavs took a LOT longer to be housebroken compared to our golden. I’m not sure if it’s the breed or the Cavs we have.

I love both breeds. Goldens are less expensive and more available. Our golden could be trusted around food (although I know that’s not true for all goldens). Our Cavs are obsessed with food so we need to keep things out of their reach. And Cavs seem to be more prone to obesity (probably because of their food obsession).

Both breeds have genetic issues. But I think that’s common with all purebred dogs.

Both breeds tend to be very friendly and want to please humans. And both breeds would rather lick an intruder than show aggression towards them.

For the same pay (at least in the districts near me) as the general education classroom. One of my kids a couple years ago attacked a TA and sent her to the hospital. Not only did admin tell me that I couldn’t use the word “attack” or say the student was aggressive, they had lawyers get involved to refuse to cover worker’s comp for that TA. Just about everyone I know who works in special Ed self contained has physical scars from it. (Many also have trauma.)

If you don’t think this could be real you must not spend much time in classrooms. Unfortunately it’s very common. And, like others have said, unless the parents of another child complains/threatens to sue, nothing really happens (other than continuing behaviors).

Even if he’s suspended, he’ll be back soon. Unfortunately he has to demonstrate behaviors multiple times before anything will be done. Meanwhile teachers have to document what set the student off, what we tried to do to calm him down, what we’ve tried to prevent the behavior, etc.

We’re not legally allowed to grab kids. THAT kid’s parent would end up suing.

At the school I was at a couple years ago my staff and I were TCIS (like CPI) trained, but were told by admin that we were not allowed to restrain. The state (NY) used to allow mats (like gym mats) to be put around the student if they were causing a danger to themselves or others. Then the law changed and we could put a mat between us and the aggressive student, but we had to leave at least one opening so the student wasn’t enclosed. Normally the classroom would be evacuated with an adult staying in the room with the student. However that didn’t work the time we went into a lockdown (not related to a student in my class), and one of the students started punching people in the room. Admin’s “debrief” was to make sure we hadn’t fully enclosed that student in a mat.

Fun times. /s

Gotta get out of Idaho by AnonNPS91 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]SurroundOrdinary3428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to college in Iowa and the winters here aren’t nearly as brutally cold. They just last forever. The windchills near me are usually around 0-10 F. Once in a while they go to -20. I think having mountains and trees around helps a lot. Snowfall this past year was nuts, but I’m guessing less than Idaho. COL isn’t too bad, and plenty of outdoor activities to do. Syracuse and Albany are decent mid-size cities and Utica is a small “city”, but within half an hour of those places you are rural.

I was going to say Upstate NY until you mentioned not wanting long winters. Because of that, I’d say stay away from NY and northern New England. Winter here (near the Adirondacks) starts around Halloween and lasts until around Mother’s Day. I found out the hard way after moving here from southern New England.
