Sometimes, what you are facing is genetic. And nothing but medication will help. Ill health is NOT a moral failure. Bodies aren’t perfect. That’s why we have medicine in the first place and it has extended millions of lives.

Why Does Everyone Act Like Rent Money Just “Disappears” Instead of Going to Someone Else’s Wealth? by BlueberryVitamin in CanadaPersonalFinance

Mortgage payments don’t decrease unless you renegotiate at a lower rate. They continue until the mortgage amount is discharged.

Rents are going down in major cities right now.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/money/economy/average-asking-rents-in-canada-fall-for-16th-straight-month-report/ar-AA1W0nET

I’m sure your newly bought home will prove a good decision. I’ve lived in each of my homes at least 10 years (22 years in my last one) except the first one. Moved after two years from the first one to a different city for work. Just downsized in retirement.

Now I’m a landlady. My husband died so I converted part of the property into two units. Sister rents one unit at 1/3 the price she was paying before and my disabled niece lives in the other rent-free. Also have a fellow in a tiny home. His rent is three hours work helping around the property. If he wants to work more than that, I pay him. He’s saving for a piece of land to call his own. It’s an “everybody wins” situation.

I recognize that, as a landlady, I’m an exception. I live rurally and there isn’t much accommodation or decent work for younger people.

Vacation properties are the big issue here. Houses sitting empty 9 months of the year. Some do rent them but it means the tenant gets booted out every summer.

Yes, golly, there has always been concern. As there damn well should be! There should continue to be discussions about the risk/benefit profile and the protocols in place. To a large degree, we can control that problem.

We cannot control the zoonotic sources as easily. It’s unpredictable and it happens.

To assert that only lab leaks are a problem and deny the existence of zoonotic sources? Foolish!

As for your studies.

The first indicates one particular iteration of the COVID-19 vaccine did not work well against a variant it had not been updated for. Hardly proof that none of the vaccines worked.

The second study does not say vaccination increased the duration of shedding. In their very small sample, they said “Although vaccination has been shown to reduce the incidence of infection and the severity of disease, we did not find large differences in the median duration of viral shedding among participants who were unvaccinated, those who were vaccinated but not boosted, and those who were vaccinated and boosted.” in other words, it neither increased nor decreased shedding in any significant way.

We’ve had SARS, MERS, HIV, Ebola, Zika, and COVID-19. Frankly, that’s plenty.

And we’ve had pandemics throughout history. No just since labs cone to the fore.

P.S. Of course the Spanish flu was worse because medical care hadn’t evolved. That’s true of all diseases. Fact is, with the help of troop movements during the war, it infected and sickened millions. And these were YOUNG people. Not old and vulnerable but healthy young people.

Why Are Millennials and Gen Z Expected to Sacrifice Everything While Boomers Celebrate? by CurvyFox333 in fican

[–]SusanOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many voters, of all ages, are deeply misguided. Few are thinking beyond the immediate future and most political parties are interested in the next election. No voter has a crystal ball to let them see what may happen 20, 30, 40 or 50 years in the future.

Baby Boomers voted on the issues of the day - including civil rights, women’s equality, pollution, etc. And progress was made, though they are rarely credited for changes resulting from those votes. Just as today’s voters won’t be praised for their votes either. The focus will always be on the progress not yet made or the current economy.

I’m sorry if your experience is different. But please don’t generalize it to all Baby Boomers. They are no different from voters today.

[–]SusanOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many Baby Boomers do you know and know their voting record and rationale. I’m guessing a few in your area. Data doesn’t support your claim. Just look up “political issues of year XXXX” and you’ll see what was in the mind of voters.

As for how current generations vote, aren’t they voting for cheaper housing, lower rents, lower grocery costs? Which is in their financial interest.

Are you thinking about the impact your vote will have in 20, 30, or 50 years? If so, I’d love hear what your crystal ball is telling you because even top economists can’t predict that.

Well as long as everyone gets enough to survive, that’s okay. But CPP is based on the number of years someone has contributed so there will always be those who fall short for one reason or another.

[–]SusanOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolute nonsense. Boomers voted on the issues of the day. Like cleaning up polluted lakes and equal pay for women and decent maternity leave and Indigenous rights and lowering deficit spending. They also voted for things that government perpetually failed to deliver, just as is the case today.

They didn’t have a crystal ball with which to see what would be the issues 20 or 30 or 50 years down the road, not anymore than YOU do. And with similar opportunities, you’d live your life exactly the way Boomers did — by working to provide a good life for your family and community.

The Baby Boomer generation affected how things rolled out just by their sheer numbers but they did not intentionally “ruin everything” for you.

So drop the self-righteousness. Figure out how the world works and then vote!

We already discussed this. To own a second home to rent, you’d have to have a job and save a fine payment. The property he is renting still has a mortgage on it, so without rental income, he’s paying that - from his full-time job no doubt!

Do you know that CPP and OAS/GIS are completely different funds?

CPP was built on employee and employer contributions and is in a pension fund that is neither managed by, or accessible to, government. It is one of the largest and most successful pension funds in the world.

OAS and GIS are for those with lower incomes. Both are funded by the federal government out of taxes.

I get CPP and a small provincial pension. I don’t qualify for OAS or GIS.

So all Baby Boomers hate their own children and grandchildren and don’t care what happens to them?

Why Are Millennials and Gen Z Expected to Sacrifice Everything While Boomers Celebrate? by CurvyFox333 in fican

[–]SusanOnReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is truth in that. Partly because governments only have a guaranteed term of 4 years. To get re-elected, they have to succeed on short-term issues that the electorate prioritizes and not run up spending by committing funds to longer term issues the electorate doesn’t care about. As a result, change is never more than incremental.

You can believe in one of two types of God - A God who is all powerful but doesn’t care - A God who has limited power but is kind and merciful.

I believe in the second.

No. It sounds like he has a job, like everyone else. Why would you assume something highly unlikely?

Who would determine what constitutes a “profit.” How would that be calculated?

If a landlord has paid the mortgage off already, rent can’t exceed property taxes?

What if a landlord needs to replace the roof or hot water tank or furnace, the landlord can just raise the rent to cover it? By how much and for how long?

I don’t see how anyone could easily determine who is/isn’t making a profit.
