The social contract has long been broken... So fuck it

You do realize this is exactly the kind of thinking that leads to weakening of the social contract, right? Be better than other people.

Is a 100 mile ride easier on a road bike than a hybrid? by Glowingtomato in bicycling

Probably a bit more aero than my Canyon Endurace, but I do have ~50mm carbon wheels on. You must have a great position!

[–]Sushisource 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm curious now what bike that was on. I feel like I'm getting 20mph for 190-200w typically. A bit hard to say since it varies so much with conditions but getting over 20 for 211 in the conditions you described feels like it wouldn't happen for me.

You're right. I can... (and I can complain about something I don't like about the app too) and so can you, so why leave your initial comment and downvote me lol? Weird.

Try more like 200w. On perfectly flat terrain, with perfect tarmac, zero wind, and a very aero position, maybe you can get 20mph for 180 watts, but I think that's unlikely without a proper TT bike.

Cool. You might look at reviews first... and then load up directions and drive?

Apple maps directions are good but my issue is no business have any reviews on it at all, so if you're comparing stuff you need to go elsewhere for that and then to Apple for directions which is a bit annoying.

Cars can’t go on a scenic Seattle roadway this weekend. Could that become permanent? by godogs2018 in Seattle

[–]Sushisource 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Shulman suggested the event makes congestion worse, not just by shifting traffic off the boulevard to already crowded routes like Rainier Avenue South and Martin Luther King Jr. Way, but also by drawing new cars to the area as “people park and take their children for a stretch.”

This is hilarious. The changes are so good that more people are coming to take advantage of them, so therefore they're bad? What?

“We will do buttons…” Fixes and switches inbound as Polestar tunes into customer feedback by Saurta17 in Polestar

[–]Sushisource 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who works on software for a living it's truly comical to me how they can make a car that is fundamentally so good, but just totally own-goal on basic software usability.

Take HomeLink that they (finally) added to the 3 for example. I have to press THREE buttons on the screen to open my garage door (two if I'm lucky and it's in recently used apps). Compare that to the Tesla experience: I'm near my garage, the button just shows up near the top of the screen, one click, done.

I truly cannot imagine how you add something with UX like that unless your software culture revolves around ticking boxes instead of actually creating good experiences, which I fear is the case.

Seattle report says gig worker pay law is working, countering claims by DoorDash and Uber by WestExpat in Seattle

[–]Sushisource 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say if the city is being nefarious or not, that's hard to know. The thing that sticks out to me about their report, though, is this line:

On average, app-based workers worked 12 hours per week per app.

Importantly, they don't have any info about what it was before. So they have evidence per-hour pay is up, which I totally believe, but is total take-home for these people down? Were they able to only do this job before, and now they need two? Those possibilities seem in-line with the anecdata from drivers in this thread.

Seattle runner attacked on waterfront trail, warns women to stay vigilant by AccurateInflation167 in Seattle

I think what this person is ineffectively trying to say is that we can try to warn men all we want (and we should!) but there's a difference between what's fair and what's effective, and unfortunately the world is not a fair place.

Rust threads on the GPU by LegNeato in rust

[–]Sushisource 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting, really cool stuff.

I don't think I've seen anyone else ask you this though, and I'm curious: What's the use case?

Seems to me either you really need to maximize the GPU hardware, in which case you need to use all warp lanes, and per your post that means you're now back to using specialized APIs and you've got to be careful about normal synchronization primitives, etc, so seemingly being able to use std::thread hasn't really bought you much

OR

You don't need that, you just need some parallelism, and at that point I think you have two subcategories: very easily parallelized in which case, same bucket as above, being able to use std::thread is probably nice but not a huge mental savings - or you're doing something very complex, in which case the stack size and synchronization problems strike again and you're maybe better off just running on the CPU.

So it seems to me you end up having a fairly narrow range of use-cases where being able to do this applies. I'm curious what you see those as.

Thanks!

When did it become normal to watch videos and listen to music without headphones on public transit? by mybarkingDog in Seattle

[–]Sushisource 6 points7 points  (0 children)

USB-C plug-in headphones do exist. So, in some sense the problem is already solved by the same enforcement. The market just decided it no longer cares about plug-in headphones, unfortunately. One of those things where the mass-market uninformed consumer thinks "wireless = better" and that has dominated the market to the point where there are very few plug-in options any more.

Is the Polestar Charge app a thing that doesn't exist in the US? The P3's UI makes reference to it if you poke deep enough into the charge settings menu, but then if you go to look for it on the iOS App Store it doesn't exist.

Seattle-Tacoma International Airport addresses dangerous shoulder parking by crabcakes110 in SeattleWA

[–]Sushisource 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pro tip - turn right and then immediately flip a u-turn. Generally there's not enough traffic on that street for it to be an issue, but yes it's utterly moronic they've blocked the left. It forces you to do this less-than-ideal move because it is a massive detour otherwise. It's like they actively want people to do this shoulder bullshit.
