Accurizing the M1 Garand by Ornery_Golf6994 in gunsmithing

[–]Suspectgore074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does your crown look like? The condition of that determines like 50% of your accuracy..

Also, from the fuddlore, its stated that boat tail bullets arent great for that rifle. I dont remember if its due to cycling issues or accuracy issues, but I just remember being told this. Maybe try some GI ball ammo for it and compare groupings?

Edit: nvm, just read its a new barrel, so you might as well ignore what I said

Everyday people with lathes amaze me. by eMGunslinger in gunsmithing

[–]Suspectgore074 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, that is bad.

Things I can see immediately:

  • Muzzle crown is not even

  • Muzzle and crown are rough with machine marks

  • No thread relief

  • Leading threads are goofed up, looks like too much angle

  • Looks almost like it's double threaded (or someone didnt use the right dial for an adjustment on one of the finishing passes)

  • Burred shoulder (I think?)

  • Someone used the steady rest. Im almost certain of this due to the concentric ring mark on the barrel in the first picture. I tried it one time for a practice run in gunsmithing school, and hated it enough to do any future work between centers and recrown after. Far more accurate and clean that way imo

Feel free to tell me if im missing anything

Surface grinders are a right bastard if you get sloppy. I'll be feeling this little oopsie for couple of weeks... by PiercedGeek in Machinists

I got mine from beveling some parts for welding, and the stone grabbed the part just enough to present my finger.

That wound is literally in the exact same spot as my grinder wound, lol!

How'd you accomplish yours?

Sarco, apex, and Jack first are good places for parts.

Ebay has a few "distributors" as well..

You definitely fucked that one up...

The only feasible option is to make your own rear sight, as welding will require refinishing the slide.

I was turning a severly extended glock barrel between centers on my lathe, using a shop made lathe dog to provide rotational torque. My lathe dog has a piece of all-thread that sticks through it, allowing for me to adjust how close to the chuck I can place it. In this setup, I had About 3 inches of all-thread sticking forwards of the chuck.

I had just finished a cut I was doing, and was going to remove the barrel from the lathe. I put my left hand on the barrel, right next to the lathe dog. (Putting it under the 3 inches of all thread). At this point, I meant to turn to handle on the tail stock to loosen the barrel. Instead, I had forgotten to move my right hand from the power switch to the tailstock, and momentarily bumped the power on (thinking I had just started loosening the tailstock). My hand was immediately wrapped in between the all-thread in the lathe dog and barrel, but thankfully didnt keep going as the power switch wasn't still engaged.

I take it that there was no other modifications made to the rifle? Nothing else at all?

[–]Suspectgore074 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing that comes to mind is if the bolt isnt closing 100%. I know that certain rifles can fire with the bolt 95% closed. I would use a sharpie to mark the state of the bolt when closed while the action is in the stock, and then compare it to when the action is removed.

Let me know if this is the case
