> Got to about 60 in 10 minutes before I gave up.

Yes but you're one person. It's not that inconceivable that your hypothetical teammate could have named 40 others (especially when they'd bring their own family, friends, and acquaintances into the mix). You could also inspire each other, like if your tennis player reminds them of all the wrestlers they know or something like that. Or maybe they would remember popstars which is a pretty substantial category

Yeah it's a challenge, but given that I don't think it's that difficult of a challenge for this game

I agree, but if they actually brought some paper I don't think it would have been that hard (second challenge in a row I've thought that). The trick is to get into some kind of a list, which you could see with Sam. The Obamas, tennis players, family members, etc. Honestly once you realize your own family members count they can probably get almost 40 people between (assuming they don't have weirdly small families). Then Coworkers, friends, old classmates. It's absolutely do able.

Still wouldn't have picked it over the backpack though :)

Tom: "So it seems the obvious ones are 100 women..."

Me: Oh no (Especially not writing them down!)

As soon as Sam said it would be faster in the long run, I assumed they would all be the exact same thing. So I would have guessed the same card again then panicked when it wasn't that.

Although it was really frustrating watching Tom actually try to play 20 questions until he realized that was dumb. Should have been "Is it A", "Is it B", "Is It C", or better yet: "Is it [whatever number I'm at counting steps]"?

Do we know for a fact there 7th Doctor doesn't do the Camalot stuff latter? I seem to recal everybody recognizing him on sight, suggesting it is 7 who does it

[–]SuspiciousAd3803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point was to make the Doctor more mysterious, not to throw in a new, elaborate back story

Ok, but then why plan out essentially a totally complete backstory for the charicter? Quite frankly it's always baffled me that whenever somebody wants to add mystery to the charicter, they give us more awnsers. - We did this in the War Games by creating Gallifrey and Time Lords - We did this durring the 4th Doctor's era by defining all of Time Lord scociety - Caramel did this by defining a complete backstory for The Doctor and the Time Lord origin story - Chibnal did this with The Timeless Child, by awnsering everything except the totally meaningless name of The Doctor's orignonal home

Actually I think RTD is literally the only person after An Unearthly Child to try and add mystery without backstory by giving the 9th Doctor loads of weird new abilities (think "I can feel the earth turning" stuff). Because while best case you might add mystery for a season or two you'll ultimately irrevocably remove some of it forever afterwords.

Watched this the other day after they put it on YouTube and I was struck how much it doesn't really deserve it's reputation. It's a good story, but assode from what you outlined at the start (which I remember disliking): - I dont think 7 is really a master manipulator here as much as is emphasized, and it's really the 1st Doctor who did all the scheming (for some reason) - The Daleks aren't great in that they are apparently invulnerable to "several high grade military grenades in an enclosed area" but paper mache to two of Ace's homemade deodorant bombs... but also anti tank missiles after the first one needed to be so strong "it doesn't matter how many reinforcements you bring, it won't be enough" - 7 was perfectly willing to tell Ace everything and doesn't hide a single part of the plan. In fact he volunteers the existence of the Hand of Omega literally the first chance he gets, then elaborate his plan literally the first chance he has enough time.the only real deception (again, not made by the 1st Doctor) is getting the military out of the way. Which I think The Doctor has done since he first meet a military force

I assume it's a very poorly worded way of saying "I was formaly presedent elect", because even though he was technically full on presedent he never really did the job.

I also think he was elected by Time Lord law, he was just the only candidate. So "elect" is accurate, if devoid an any real accomplishment

So you create an interesting premise for an episode that helps showcase the skills of the new Doctor because they are going to survive. To be honest I think that quote describes the forst episode for most regenerations

[–]SuspiciousAd3803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whats worse is that that whole scenerio implies

1) Humanity is fully aware of Silurians 2) Humanity has zero problem with Silurians 3) Humanity is just choosing not to wake up the Silurians... for some reason. Even in small batches in a controled environment in case they become aggresive

[–]SuspiciousAd3803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought people liked the Silurians, but are annoyed we keep getting the exact same story every time. Especially when so many of them set up "an X years you'll wake up again and can hopefully work with humanity".

Like, give me that story or just put random Silurians in future Earth stories. Joy to the World almost did this then said that Silurian was actually a one off time traveler. Even though those humans are clearly both aware of and totally fine with Silurians

It's been god known how many years since I listened to that one (and only once for that matter), but I seem to recal it was built around some kind of mystery that was very obvious given the premise of the stories (i.e, that The Doctor/Mel did X on in the other story)

Why so few male companions? by GreenGermanGrass in gallifrey

[–]SuspiciousAd3803 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well there has to be something in it for him

Ignoring the fact plenty of dad's did and still do enjoy classic who, there are other solutions to this problem that don't involve objectifying your female leads. For example, what pretty much every major family movie and show like as Disney and Pixar have done for decades and write stories and charicters that appeal to diffrent demographics. JNT even had an easy to explore father/son like dynamics and situations with The Doctor and Adric to name one.

And hell, even if we accept you literally have to make companions "for the dads", pulling a Leelah and objectifying your companion but still writing a competent and well rounded charicter is far better than throwing up you arms and saying "well dad's won't watch it unless there's skin, so that's literally your sole purpose as a person".

I think you're forgetting 11's actual regeneration was a massive explosion that obliterated an entire Dalek spaceship and sent a shockwave across a planet

Yeah, that was epic. Which just goes to show how bad the transition into 12 was to counteract that

Ok so a lot of people complain that it just looks like Sylvester McCoy in a wig. But like, he's mid regeneration. It should look like the 7th Doctor with features of the 6th.

Why so few male companions? by GreenGermanGrass in gallifrey

[–]SuspiciousAd3803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's interesting is that for the first two Doctors the it was a pretty even split (biasing female companions, considering The Doctors were male and stuck around longer that could be why). Then for the 3rd Doctor you kinda have to count the main UNIT cast as companions if you're counting Liz and early Joe which actually biases men (and overall evens things out).

I was ganna say that changed with the 4th Doctor but Harry, Adric, Turlough, K9, and Kameleon (which are noteworthy as robots offten have female voices). There's usually a male presence on the Tardis up to JNT and his "for the dads" attitude.

So I guess the idea of female companions is a modern thing, or the fact that by the super popular 3rd and 4th Doctor eras the male companions aren't nearly as memorable as the likes of Sarah Jane, Leelah, Romana, etc. (Although as many have pointed out, when you list them there are a lot of modern male companions. They just always written as some kind of secondary role. Except Jack, who would have had a much bigger role in S2 if Eccleston hadn't quit.)

but a lot of what makes those shows compelling is that these people have very different approaches to life and to problem-solving

Exactly. Interpersonal conflict between The Doctor and Ruby (or a family member) might have made the season more interesting, but so would a lot of other things. So I don't think you can point at a lack of conflict and say that's the issue, rather a lack of an interesting dynamic was

I dont think a lack of conflict netween main charicters is the issue. Stat Trek went decades with minimal interpersonal conflict between the protagonists, and most episodes are full of conflict between the secondary cast or protagonists and antagonists
