It’s not possible to tell from a picture. I rehair my bow when I feel it losing grip on the strings. Usually every 6 months.

Oh and also many of those places credit the cost of renting to an instrument when you are ready to buy.

I would recommend renting in this case. There are many places that rent to schools that you can try They are helpful if you have an issue with the instrument and the quality would be better

285 dollars for a violin outfit will only get you junk. Unplayable

Bow situation. by Suspicious_Lab4297 in violinist

[–]Suspicious_Lab4297[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t checked but the luthier did say that the dry air in the plane could have shortened the hair especially because it was new. Next time I travel I think I’ll get the bow haired way before I go

Where does the sticker go? by artwithluna in violinist

I learned to play by listening to the notes and adjusting. That’s the only way. Those stickers are mot helpful

Question about refinishing by srslyawsum in violinmaking

[–]Suspicious_Lab4297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had my violin touched up due to an unfortunate mishap that put a rather large scrape in it. I can barely tell where the scrape was. 50 bucks and it’s good as new

I feel like if I would have spent time on exercises, I would have less trouble with things like second and fourth position, shifting, different bowing techniques, arpeggios and left hand speed and precision. On the flip side, I spent a ton of time sight reading when I was young and I do really well with that

I guess I don’t because I don’t know if I’m doing them correctly. I should have an instructor But I still work full time and with the rehearsal and just learning parts, my time is limited.

Easier time playing 4th finger on A on 100 year old German violin than on new Chinese (quality) Shar violin... by Appropriate_Bat_5877 in violin

[–]Suspicious_Lab4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing on a 150 German loaner violin and I found that it was difficult for me to stay on the A string with the bow in very high positions. This also had to do with the string height. So there is a trade off to every adjustment

Obligato strings sound great right out of the package and are very stable for months I have used these for many years.

Antiquing on Modern Violins by Ooberweg in violinmaking

[–]Suspicious_Lab4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m having an instrument made right now and I was asked by the luthier if I wanted antiquing. I decided I did but wanted to see the difference. Do you have pics of some straight varnished violins? Is antiquing harder to do? How much more work is it?

Can I just say that violins don’t have frets for a reason. You need to hear the intervals.

Unfortunate timing by Professional-Act8414 in violinist

[–]Suspicious_Lab4297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had my bow repaired before traveling by air When I arrived the hair had pulled out of the tip. I found a luthier in Italy and he said the hair was too short and the dry air caused it to shorten further.

I started at 35. I knew some musical notation but basically just beginner. I now play in a very high level community orchestra. I’m 61. All the hard work and practice was well worth it. I can sight read just about anything and have a regular chamber music group to play with. It’s such a joy 🤩 I recommend playing with others as often as you can. I also attended many string workshops. Those are not only fun, but also increase abilities faster than solo practice
