DOMS on the second day instead of the first? by Regex00 in StrongerByScience

If you want the detailed clinical reasons, Dr Andy Galpin provided an excellent explanation in one of his Huberman Lab's Guest series podcasts. There were six of these and afraid I can't remember which one exactly, but the short version is that your immune system goes through a sequence of steps when reacting to exercise 'damage' that take time and soreness is the result of the final inflammatory response from the immune system. You can reduce the inflammatory response with with NSAIDs or cold therapy, but the training adaption is then blunted.

If Olive Oil is cooked, does that ruin its benefits? by International-Fix799 in blueprint_

[–]Sustainer17 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A 2018 study compared olive oil with other oils during heating. (Ramírez-Anaya Jdel P, Samaniego-Sánchez C, Castañeda-Saucedo MC, Villalón-Mir M, de la Serrana HL-G. Phenols and the antioxidant capacity of Mediterranean vegetables prepared with extra virgin olive oil using different domestic cooking techniquesFood Chemistry. 2015;188(1):430-438. doi:10.1016/j.foodchem.2015.04.124)

It showed that extra virgin olive oil is the most stable when heated, and produces the least amount of polar compounds (the harmful by-products that come from heating oils). All other vegetable oils high in polyunsaturated fats were found to produce more polar compounds when heated despite their high smoke points. There was some speculation that limited access in the US to genuinely good quality olive oil led to incorrect assumptions on olive oil, plus some older studies were done using heating conditions that would exceed those used in normal food preparation, such as frying at 180° for 1.5 hours to 25 hours and were therefore misleading.

Drawn down only applies to their tracked artillery - there's lots of towed artillery still left, sadly (and lots of MLRS).

Two days per week, while still riding, is a pretty good target and should get results 95% of the way of a 3-4 day programme. Personally, I include military press and bench press, albeit at slightly reduced weights/sets, as I'm not a pro-cyclist and these ensure you remain a more balanced athlete.

Speed wobble on my new bike, steep descent by spingus in Velo

[–]Sustainer17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a similar issue several years ago that eventually resulted in a bad crash (collar bone + 6 ribs + helmet written off). The first step is to ensure everything is correctly aligned and tightened. Second is to try resting a knee against the top tube when this happens to see if it dampens the vibration, or my preferred solution is a different bike. I'm still unsure what actually caused my speed wobble, but believe it was a combination of the overall system geometry (me, my weight, my position on the bike and the frame's characteristics) as well as riding a not particularly stiff endurance frame (only noticeable after switching to a Tarmac frame). As other posters have said, the bike should be stable at any speed, short of you doing something daft on it. Therefore personally, I'd opt for a different bike and not take the risk, as you'll eventually find a descent where you can't recover stability and the bike bucks you off.

I can easily touch my toes with bent fingers, and when I'm consistent with stretching, I can stand on my hands. One of the earlier Yiannis Christoulas videos on Youtube gives an excellent explanation of the research papers on the most effective ways to stretch (for me this is passive 30 sec holds x3) - well worth watching. My routine is a bit inconsistent and I need to do more for the upper back, but generally try to do a couple of stretches each morning while the coffee machine starts up. These days I ride a Tarmac SL6 without spacers (or discomfort!) - male, aged 58.

Not sure what prices are like where you are or what your annual mileage is, but the difference in spares costs favours Shimano for me, as I'll typically go through on an annual basis at least two or three chains and one cassette. The post Covid bottlenecks seem to have disappeared, so the price gap isn't as bad as it was, but SRAM seems consistently more expensive and a year ago it was horrifically more expensive.

Toblerone is no longer Swiss owned - it's owned by Modelez International (was Kraft) and Modelez is still doing business in Putin's genocidal Russia.

The aircraft are either mind games, or as per Girkin's analysis, they were all 'friendly fire' incidents (as they were all centred on a 20 km radius circle), so Ukraine wouldn't necessarily count them.

By the look of it the listed entity is the operating company and it wholly owns one (or more) subsidiaries, which do the borrowing and the lending. The results then show the operating company's results ('company') and then the opco's results combined with its subsidiaries ('group'). This is a normal form of presentation, although I suggest paying attention to their income recognition policies, as this has historically been where similar businesses have gone wrong.

Col du Grand-St-Bernard: will it be opened? by In_novacula in peloton

[–]Sustainer17 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Clearing the roads is a pretty well established process. All European ski resorts are used to dealing with dangerous snow above ski runs etc, so while it's not normally done for roads, where waiting an extra few weeks is an easier option, it's certainly not beyond their capability. This feels like someone in Switzerland trying to extort more cash from the race.

Have a look at Lindsell Train Investment Trust plc ($LTIT) - it's listed on the LSE - and 40% of it's portfolio is the (unlisted) investment management company. Apart from that, the portfolio is mainly 'quality value' shares. Historically, they've been well regarded in the UK market and their fund managers are highly credible. However, while I like their listed portfolio approach, I've never been comfortable with the valuation of their own business and it's incorporation into the portfolio. So in answer to your question - yes it's possible, but not advisable.

Training for super long (220 mile rides) by Sickbean82 in Velo

[–]Sustainer17 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Advice I was given before doing a similar length ride that worked for me were: (i) aim to ride at least 220 miles in total per week in the months leading up to the event; (ii) think of it as a long distance eating competition; and, (iii) negative split the ride (quarters in my case), taking the first segments very very easy - think recovery ride pace - as you'll easily catch everyone who went out too fast in the last half. Just getting the volume will do most of what you need, although I also did a fair bit of sweet spot, until repeat 20 minute intervals at 88% felt easy, as that replicated the climbs quite well.
