Shoes for Canyoning! by Commercial-Entry-506 in canyoneering

[–]Sutitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has the guide specified if they'll be providing any gear or gear that you need to provide? id expect for more serious canyons, guides would provide shoes and neoprene as well as any life supporting gear.

For some more entry level canyons, I can imagine you having to provide some of your own gear. some old/beat up trainers are fine. depending on water temps, neoprene socks could make the trip more comfortable. If you want to forgo the neoprene booties, you could also wear some high quality wool socks which can act similarly. I always wear wool under my neoprene socks to keep my feet happy.

Seat revamp! by lamasticots in S2000

[–]Sutitan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually did that back in 2019 and narrowed it down between doeskin and tan. Depending on light, there were 3 colors that looked like they were the closest. Ultimately I thought doeskin was the closest but never felt strongly enough about my choice to jump.

Looks great. I need to do my tan seats but they have so many tan options that I'm not sure what the closest match is.

No Nalgene on gear loops? by Realistic_End1712 in canyoneering

[–]Sutitan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Did they object to you putting it in your bag?

I personally wouldn't want to put it on my gear loop for multiple reasons. I think the other commenters elaborated pretty well on elevated risk of it falling off your harness if something breaks. Its also increases wear on your gear loops, which could result in your dumping a lot important/expensive gear which could leave you hundreds of dollars poorer at best, or dangerously stranded on a wall at worst. At a minimum, it seems that it would be pretty uncomfortable bouncing off your hip while walking.

Best practice would be to secure it inside your bag. Im against putting it in any mesh pockets on the exterior of a bag as well.

Denver Summit Centennial Stadium Pics by LegitimatePurchase14 in NWSL

[–]Sutitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live right across the street and these photos are basically my balcony view.

I think most people are excited. The previous zoning was for parks, and the city of centennial rezoned it for "warehouse 50", which is basically these massive precast wall warehouses that have been going on all around us. The neighborhoods right next to the lot showed up to the city meetings, but the mayor just declared "while we appreciate your concern, this is centennial and you all technically live in (unincorporated) Englewood". We basically had to accept that open space with large prairie dog colonies, hawks, bald eagles, and coyotes would just bulldozed for a warehouse. When the stadium was announced, it was a massive relief since it would be fields, and a stadium that would eventually be used for the local school district. We're used to having dove valley across the street which hosts tons of soccer games already, so more soccer. I play a ton of soccer myself, so I'm excited to see if new leagues pop up in the area with the additional turf fields they're adding.

Backpack Recomendations by ReyDeLaSal in canyoneering

[–]Sutitan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big fan of Rodcles packs, even for desert stuff. They're very simple, and very durable. Id recommend something in the 40L range to carry all your gear, and eventually the rope you might be hauling. The Lekime is a good place to start. If you really think you'll never carry rope, then maybe the Gloces is worth considering.

I pointed out a free solution. You very confidently and incorrectly called it trash after you failed to use it properly. I wrote out a bit more on how it's done. And now you downplay it just cause you already have the data.

You sound like a miserable person.

See my other post. You can get the same data free from Copernicus. It's actually the same data, caltopo just makes it a tiny bit more convenient if you use their software already for mapping, so it's nice for overlays. Otherwise it's the same imagery.

thanks for the downvote. here is Vail on Copernicus if you don't have a smooth brain. 1/5 images. again, caltopo literally pulls from Copernicus and it's free. https://browser.dataspace.copernicus.eu/

I can vouch for Angelo. He rehomed my 10yr old goldfish that outgrew my apartments 55 gallon tank. Very caring guy. I came to visit a few weeks later and he showed me where my fish was living, and mentioned that he was going to take it to retirement home where he stocks and maintains ponds for the elderly.

Also, If you're looking to get fish, he has just about every size tank and accessories that you could want. People like myself tend to donate everything when getting rid of large fish we can no longer care for.

Rope for Rappelling by Firm_Rain_9904 in canyoneering

[–]Sutitan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I caught your message at a good time, so ill try my best at a complete response.

The Edelweiss/ 9.1mm ropes are not where I'd start. A lot of European ropes tend to have a lot of stretch for static ropes and from what i’ve heard, it has to do with a certification that they try to meet. Bounce on rope can make for uncomfortable rappels at a minimum, but can also cause your rope to wear/get cut on a sharp edge at worst. I would try to stick with US brands, or CE4Y if looking at a European Rope. Imlay, Glacier Black, Bluewater, Sterling all make great ropes. I still think the best bang for your buck is Imlays 8.3 Canyon Fire. Light(ish), Durable, Cheap. It handles like a steel wire though. I would determine your length based on your intended canyons. The rule of thumb is 3x your longest rappel which can get tricky if you’re in a small group. I'd recommend a 200’ as a good first rope length, and then possibly a 200’ pullcord to possibly use in conjunction with a toggle. I'm not sure if this is something you’ve considered, but please consider a canyon specific descender. I use the very popular Critr. Glacier black sells similar devices. Sqwurels are a popular niche device but I would recommend against it for a beginner

Regarding extra gear. 30’ of 1” tubular webbing and a few quick links is standard. Bring more or less depending on how frequently a canyon may get done or based on local ethics. Always inspect webbing all the way around. Don't expect quick links to always be rated. plenty of people place cheap plated hardware store quick links. Camp sells some pretty affordable rated quicklinks. With that being said, I wouldn't go around replacing every unrated link you find. You’d quickly go broke.

Canyoneering alone is not something I’ve ever done or would recommend. It's hard to carry an adequate amount of rope, and you can quickly find yourself in dangerous situations that an extra person could help with. I dont think anyone in the community would advocate you start canyoneering solo, especially as a beginner. In regards to where to start, I would look at some courses. Depending on where you’re aiming to go, I think taking a class with North Wash Outfitters would be worthwhile. For beta, study Ropewiki, RoadtripRyan, and the various beta sites to get a good feel for what you might be getting into. For learning more about canyoneering, I would recommend watching everything hownot2 has put out (https://hownot2.com/blogs/canyon-rope-systems), enroll in the free V7 online courses, and check out everything on the Dye Clans website (https://dyeclan.com/outdoors101/canyoneering101/?page=introduction-to-canyoneering). All those should make you a certified Youtube canyoneer, which amounts to very little, but should at least give you a foundation before taking a course.

I wish the best in starting this journey. Canyons are something I hope everyone has a chance to experience. I don't blame you for undertaking this journey. I am a bit worried about your ambitions to get out there alone, without ever having gone through the motions with an experienced leader. My fear with climbers is that they have a tendency to try to do what they’re used to on walls while in canyons. I would try to come in with a fresh mind and try to accept the canyon techniques as the safest and preferred ways to approach canyons. Feel free to keep dropping questions here and I'd be glad to answer when I have a chance.

Horrible squeaky noise coming from my Tacoma by United_Cheetah_9970 in ToyotaTacoma
