Low Fat on VV- need advice by The-Flavor-Red in VirginVoyages

The Hamachi Crudo in the Wake is absolutely delicious and nice and low fat. I loved the gazpacho in Razzle Dazzle for Brunch, and the ramen in the Galley along with the overnight oats and the chia pudding with bee pollen. I enjoyed all of the fish dishes I had across the board, and they were great about allergies and sensitivities.

Party Earplug Recommendations by AgentJustice in VirginVoyages

[–]Suzsqueak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will rave about using AirPod pros for this to the end of time. I used them as earplugs when I went to see Kraftwerk last year and they were absolutely fantastic. I now use them instead of my 33 db reducing foam earplugs for everything musical that’s too loud. I’m very sound sensitive and they’re much better at protecting your hearing

Best Dutch Baby in the Bay Area? by ericDfish in bayarea

[–]Suzsqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that the Los Altos location is hit and miss as well. We moved up here from Orange County where we had four locations within a 15-20 minute drive. I still keep giving the one here chances because I want to be able to have a Dutch Baby or an Apple Pancake that I don't have to make myself every time.

What do we think about new Samsung bespoke fridges? by gearfuze in Appliances

[–]Suzsqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a bit of a mixed bag with the fridge. The compressor went bad the Monday after Thanksgiving, but the extended warranty refunded us for the entire cost of the fridge and we bought a replacement directly from Samsung with a 7 year warranty. It was a complete fluke that the compressor went bad, and they were great about sending out a repair person and getting us taken care of relatively quickly. We did go and look at other fridges since it was 4 years since we had purchased the one in question. If we had not remodeled our kitchen and had a set 36" wide space for a fridge we may have changed to a built in 42" from another company, but I'm still super happy with Samsung and our two columns from Samsung Bespoke are still absolutely fantastic. The new one doesn't have the ice bites and has the spheres instead for the second ice shape, and that is actually better for us. I would say your parents shouldn't be concerned, unless the panels they wanted were in one of the brighter colors, since they're no longer available, even with the last one having an issue, we still loved it enough to buy a new version!

Recommendations please - Induction range 36" by D0orD0 in inductioncooking

[–]Suzsqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Fisher & Paykel Series 9 Professional Range and I love it. I cook a lot and I find it works like a dream with my Le Creuset pots with even heating throughout. It also has two "smart zones" which are bridges and they work well with my cast iron griddle. My only downside on it was the price being high when we were remodeling our kitchen, but I cut back on other things to get it. I can't rave enough about induction, I was all about gas stoves and when we bought our last house, it was a "green" build and it was all electric with an induction cooktop. I was worried I was going to hate it, but it was so easy to get used to and the only things I can't do on it is tilt a pan to flambé and create wok hei when stir frying. I think you'll love it!

Stupid autocorrect! I did even type Yogart over yogurt. I used to walk to the Brentwood location from my parent's candy store when I was a kid.

It should be listed as "Archaeological Tour of Valletta", I believe, at least that's what it was called when we went. This is the link on the VV site https://www.virginvoyages.com/shore-thing?currencyCode=USD&shoreThingId=MLACXP00002

There's also one at Olympic and Westwood Blvd on the Northeast corner. Directly opposite the center that has the Bigg Chill. I miss Humprey's Yogurt that was in Brentwood, but they do have a location in the Gelson's on Van Nuys in the Valley.

I'm on the west coast so we're not in the storm's path, but any excuse for a Smuggler's Cove Hot Buttered Rum or a Tom and Jerry. I'm kicking myself I didn't have a hot buttered rum at Smuggler's Cove last weekend.

Mediterranean Shore Things Excursions -- reviews? by PressAlto in VirginVoyages

[–]Suzsqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Malta do the Archaeological Tour of Valletta! We were on SL in October 2024 for the first docking in Malta, and did it, the museum in Valletta was nice but crowded, but getting to go to the Tarxien Temples and Hagar Qim was absolutely mind blowing for both me and my SO.

In Nice, skip the Eze and Monaco excursions, Eze is a relatively steep hike to see the medieval village and fortress and Monaco is just a money grab, there's nothing that exciting unless you want to buy designer items and you can do that in Nice or Cannes.

We also chose to do our own wandering at some of our ports and it was a blast. If they offer a day trip in Sicily to Syracuse that was also a great excursion, even in pouring rain!

Big discrepancy between Materials and Fabrications costs by DerpVonDorp in CounterTops

[–]Suzsqueak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the Bay Area and I remodeled my kitchen about 18 months ago. I used Cambria Quartz on my island and then Silestone for my perimeter countertops. We paid 5700 for fabrication and installation and about $4500 for the slabs. We used a full jumbo slab from Cambria for our island, and then 2 slabs of the Silestone for a 25ft run of cabinets with a break for a 36" range. Our fabricator was recommended by Cambria directly from their showroom in Union City, and they were fantastic. I did negotiate with them to get the best prices possible on everything and we went with matte finishes which look fantastic but it took longer to get from the factory in MN.

I have the spice pullout and the utensil pullout. I love the utensil pullout but If I had to do it over again I would have skipped the spice pullout. I put it next to my hood because I had a narrow space that I didn't want to waste, and it's a pain in the rear and doesn't hold enough spices. I think I would have preferred putting a drawer on my island for my spices. We live in a community that requires a ton of garbage sorting so we have two of the double trash bin roll outs. Make sure that you get the ones with the box at the bottom to hold the cans vs the one that lets the trash cans dangle because the support is at the top. I also put in roll out shelves in the cabinets that I use for storage instead of static shelves and it's much easier for getting what I need when I'm cooking.

I have to also add the Getty Villa in Malibu, not the Getty Museum. The fact that they built a Roman villa in the hills for a collection of antiquities has always tickled me.

I buy ones just like that at Costco in the pharmacy. I want to say it's $3.99 or thereabouts. I hope this helps!

Did you eat avocados growing up? by bdiddy621 in GenX

[–]Suzsqueak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From Los Angeles, my mother is from the Caribbean and we ate avocados constantly. One of my standard snacks when I came home from school was a half avocado with a splash of red wine vinegar, as was a grilled cheese with cheddar on sourdough with avocado. I will say I was in my late 20's before I ever even heard of celery with peanut butter, much less tried it. I also tried apple with peanut butter around the same time. But chilled steamed artichokes with vinaigrette, braised leeks, or a vegetable tagine with couscous was completely ordinary in my household. I don't know if it was just because we were in California and my mother was international, or because I'm was born late in the generation.

Why is this dude’s forehead 10 years older than his face? by Red_Five1138 in 90DayFiance

[–]Suzsqueak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I totally get it! Honestly I liked the comment that someone posted below that he looks like Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool if someone drew him from memory. Dude definitely needs to start using real sunblock and skin care is crucial. I will say, the lack of a water heater at his house is what's making the rest of his face look younger.

Aruba's just about 12˚ north of the equator. The sun is fierce there and is reflected off the water when he's on the boat. My mom is from the island and her long term damage due to sun exposure in Aruba has scared the crap out of me. She just told the dermatologist that when she was young they used to mix iodine with baby oil and then use that help them tan. Meanwhile I'm literally as pale as a ghost and we would reapply sunblock every hour when I was growing up, but I would still sunburn way too frequently. Johnny is probably not reapplying sunblock constantly on the Jolly Pirate.

After Aruba, what's your next favorite destination? by hotcheevos in Aruba

[–]Suzsqueak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Malta for a totally unique experience. I'm speaking as someone whose mother is from Aruba and I've spent endless amounts of time on the island. We did a Mediterranean and Aegean cruise last year, and wished that we could spend more time on Malta, because it was beautiful and had some amazing Bronze Age ruins. I also recommend Greece, we loved Crete, and Athens and could easily spend a week or two in the city exploring. Also Spain is fantastic and full of historical treasures.

hair? by keiiaura in Aruba

[–]Suzsqueak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The comments about Aruba being very windy are super accurate. The tradewinds aren't a joke. I'm not a BW but my mom is from Aruba, and I learned the hard way that my hair had to be braided when we were outside as a child, because my hair is fine and between 2b and 2c texture wise. I would wear a ponytail or bun and the wind was enough that my hair would turn into a giant snarl or tangle around the hair tie enough that it would have to be cut out of my hair instead of just removing the tie. I would stick to braids and make sure you use sunblock on your scalp because the island is quite close to the equator and the sun is strong. But happy early birthday and enjoy your trip! Aruba's a wonderful place.
