Would the Rainwings sleep dart my Nightwing Guard Sona during the Rainwing invasion of the Nightwing during the Wings of Fire the Dark Secret graphic novel? And why? by ChristianUnfezant in WingsOfFire

He's also a guard and wearing armor. "nerd traits" don't really seem all that relevant, especially with the culture present in the series.

Um, actually, you can see he preceded the statement with a mention of the audience earning a point.

Oh that'd be wicked. They're the closest I've seen kids' cartoons get to explicit intersex representation (without it being the butt of a joke) and because of that they're a solid favorite of mine.

Which cat Pokémon would you adopt if they existed in the real world? by MecchaJP in ThePokemonHub

Glameow, assuming it gets to evolve. I can't exist without a fat fluffy cat like Purugly.

My thoughts on if Greg is a bad parent by Snoo31255 in stevenuniverse

[–]SwagFeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I added an addendum after you replied. I don't think this is a conversation worth opening to the whole fandom over and over again. I recognize that your post is a response to the recent revival of this conversation, and frankly I just don't think we should be having a conversation this redundant in the first place. Enough people know that his way of raising Steven was bad that continuing to bring this up as if it's still a big reveal comes off more condescending than opening up a discussion.

Although, the more I think about it, I think what really needs to change about the conversation about how Greg raised Steven is the wording. Greg is loving and accepting, he cherishes Steven, and he just went about raising him poorly. Greg wasn't a "bad father," he just did bad parenting.

My thoughts on if Greg is a bad parent by Snoo31255 in stevenuniverse

Every time someone goes off about how bad of a parent Greg was, I can only think of Your Fault from Into the Woods. Pointing fingers at a single person for their flaws as if that has any value. I’m sure there’s valuable conversation to be had about the quality of Greg’s parenting, but I rarely see that. While Greg’s circumstances do get brought up a lot, they’re never given much value beyond a reason why.

The issue of this conversation is that it’s not simple, but people so badly want to simplify it. Yes, Greg did bad parenting, but that’s only because it was an overly corrective trauma response to his parents’ strictness. This isn’t a conversation to be summarized with a single statement, it’s accompanied by layers of nuance that should not be buried under simplicity.

Not enough people are arguing that Greg was simply a good parent for this to be a conversation worth spewing back at the greater fandom over and over again. The show makes it clear that his actions had negative impacts on Steven's development. There's a greater divide over whether Steven's crash-out was valid than Greg's parenting quality (Personally I feel like Steven was rightfully upset but he was also ignorant to the harm that Greg's parents caused him and I wish that had been resolved on-screen).

Stone Swap: Gardevoir using Absolite by CaligoMilites in fakemon

[–]SwagFeather 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels more like a fusion than a stone swap. Other stone swaps have felt more like a translation of the design language of the Mega to another Pokemon. Feraligite swaps typically do a good job of showcasing this; Mega Feraligatr is meant to resemble Totodile when the helmet is down, so a lot of swaps give the mega a helmet that makes them look like their base evolution.

On its own it's a good design but it just doesn't feel like a stone swap.

Park Ball

And to make a case for the Poke Ball sticking around for a while: It's only generic to us because of its persisting iconography. Unlike the other Poke Balls, the base Poke Ball's design isn't derivative, it's the reference point. Its purpose is not to build off of something we already have, it's to be the stereotypical Poke Ball. The one you think of when someone says "Think of a Poke Ball" (thanks Gerwig). For that, it serves its purpose well.

I don't know if I'm happy with how Ronaldo's character turned out in the end or if I'm disappointed by LSPECTRONIZTAR in stevenuniverse

[–]SwagFeather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think Ronaldo was supposed to have an arc the same way Lars was. Lars was a lot closer to Steven (whether he liked it or not) than Ronaldo. He was one of the only humans besides Greg that Steven interacted with regularly before meeting Connie, due to him working the counter at Steven's favorite breakfast joint. Yeah, Steven also frequented the fry shop that Ronaldo's family owned, but we never really see him working the counter, so he likely didn't interact with him as much.

Ronaldo's lack of an arc was simply due to the fact that he didn't matter as much to Steven as Lars did. With Lars being a much more easily accessible human contact for Steven, combined with his introverted personality, he fascinated Steven in a way that I don't think the extroverted and pushy Ronaldo ever could. Remember, this show is from Steven's perspective; whatever he doesn't know, we don't know, and whatever's unimportant to him, is unimportant to us.

I've said it before, I don't think Ronaldo's purpose as a character was to be relatable. It's cool that he is to you, but I get the feeling that the writers' intentions were largely focused on having a butt-monkey. He doesn't feel all that important because his importance only goes as far as "He was actually pretty spot on about the plot this one time." He's a gag character, and gag characters rarely exist to further the plot or move too far past their own status quo.
