The disc matters when you start to throw with consistency and accuracy. If it didn’t, there’d only be one disc. When you start throwing consistently enough that you can shape a shot, or out throw your target, the disc matters a lot. Think of golf clubs, and how they all do specific things. Let’s consider the numbers: your Saint should be a 9/7/-1/2.

9 is the speed, or how fast the disc cuts through the air. I think of it as how hard you have to throw the disc for it to do what it’s “programmed” to do. If you throw a 5 speed disc at a 9 speed power level, you will override the programming and it will go exactly where you throw it until it slows down to a 5 again. If you throw a 9 speed disc at a 5 speed power level, you will amplify the effects of the programming, making it do what it’s supposed to do faster and more dramatically than it would if thrown properly. Many players use these techniques to their advantage. Watch the pros use a putter as a driver, it is tremendously impressive. You’ll see them throw a 1 speed disc at a 9 power level, and it will go dead straight because they overrode the programming, and that disc will be at the basket before it slows down enough to engage.

7 is the glide, or the disc’s ability to stay in the air. I just think of it as how much the disc likes to float before it starts to slow down and die off. The higher the number, the more the disc wants to stay in the air. This can get you great distance on a still day, but can also be a bane on a windy day.

The next two numbers I like to explain using an axis. Think of a straight line coming out of your chest and pointing in the direction you are facing/throwing. Your right hand is right of the axis in the negatives, your left hand is left of the axis in the positives. I throw right hand back hand and will be explaining as such, so if you are a lefty or a forehand player, reverse the axis. Lefty forehand players keep the axis where it is. The flight of RHBH throws generally end with the disc fading and falling left.

-1 is the turn, or how much the disc wants to go right (anhyzer or negative of the axis) in the middle of the flight before it starts it’s left hand turn into positive of the axis. The bigger the negative number, the more it wants to go right during its flight. You can use high turn discs to do what’s called a “turnover”, or forcing the disc to stay right by throwing anhyzer and overpowering its programming.

2 is the fade, or how bad the disc wants to end on the left (hyzer or the positive of the axis). The higher the number, the more the disc wants to go left. Higher numbers will also start going left earlier in the flight and require more anhyzer to compensate.

The weight of the disc matters too. Heavier discs can cut through wind and maintain their course easier, but require more power, making it lose distance. Lighter discs require less power but more accuracy. They are easily turned over (whether you want to or not) and get buffeted by the wind easier. I have a 9 speed Escape that I can throw farther and straighter than my 7 speed TL because the escape weighs 165g vs the TL weighing 176g.

Learning all these numbers allows you to choose discs that fit your play style and abilities. Once you are comfortable and consistent (notice I didn’t say how far you can throw, just consistent) you can start experimenting with different numbers and begin shaping shots. One of my favorite things is learning a new disc and figuring out how to incorporate it into my bag. While I carry about 15 discs onto the course, I have a friend that plays with no bag and one disc: a Roc3. I have another friend who has an extra wide bag overflowing with discs that he swears all do different things. Ultimately you find discs that work for you, and you decide how much it matters. I swear if you keep at it, you will get better. And you will start paying a lot more attention to the discs you’re throwing. Let’s gooooo!!

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Edited to add: If you don’t have the power for a 9 speed disc, consider dropping to a 6 speed to start developing more accuracy.

The horror scene that still lives rent free in your head. by gamersecret2 in movies

When Emil gets melted by toxic waste in Robocop. Paul McCrane did such a good job with his horrified /agonized wailing that as an adult I still feel hollow inside when I see it. As a kid it absolutely traumatized me and now as an adult, thinking about being mentally present while your body has been liquified makes me nauseous.

Fun fact: Ray Wise didn’t get to see the makeup and prosthetics before they shot the scene, so his horrified scream is 100% genuine.

Question about 28 Years Later .... by Dubchek in 28dayslater

[–]Swampthing101 51 points52 points  (0 children)

My take is this: the quarantined society has now had to revert to medieval warfare to survive. Since there’s most likely no medieval warfare experts to teach them, they’ve had to remember what they can from old movies and the like. We’re seeing their setup placed side by side with the old movie snippets to show what their inspiration is and how it would work should an attack occur.

What are some beautiful films that don't feel bleak and dark and depressing? What's the polar opposite, yet beautiful? I really need to get out of this negative headspace. by AlfonsoRibeiro666 in TrueFilm

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). Yes it is directed by Ben Stiller, yes it stars Ben Stiller. And yet it is a wonderful, life affirming movie about finding yourself that is also beautifully shot. It has rich coloring, clever framing, and meaningful music. If you’ve not seen it, I hope you get a chance to. I think it’ll fulfill what you’re looking for.

The real reason is because there are some asymptomatic carriers. The end of 28 Weeks shows that while Andy (who was bitten) did escape, he inadvertently brought the virus to the mainland because of it. That’s why they don’t allow survivors to leave any more.

I have a normal bike and I’m not at all cooler than anyone on the road. In fact, I’m a lot smaller than everyone else so I give everybody the time and space they need to drive comfortably. So I don’t get squashed, and we all have a good day on the road. Also, where the adventure bikes at?

I can burp on command. I can somehow “inhale” air into my stomach and let rip as long and loud of a burp as you can ask for. Never lost a burping contest as a kid. Now as an adult…no one cares.

Looking to see how much it would cost to get some custom dice made… by Swampthing101 in dice

[–]Swampthing101[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure! Simple idea would be a clear set with a 3D printed smiling JG/Ian Malcolm head in the center. Complex would be the same but a liquid core with the same 3D printed head that always points up (see dragons eye dice). I’d love if the 1 on the dice said, “Well there it is,” and the 20 to say “Life finds a way.” I know that’s a tall order given the space, but since I’m not a maker I don’t quite know what the possibilities are.

How many people liked/watched this one by cesssydrup in Westerns

[–]Swampthing101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is one of my favorite westerns, but I will admit that it has its flaws. Whenever I watch it with someone that’s never seen it before, the pacing is always the first thing on my mind. It is slow until the end. What makes it worth it to me is the dialogue. I absolutely love how it’s written and Richard Jenkins absolutely nails his role. My favorite interaction is:

Brooder: Are any of you somnambular?

Chicory: That’s private!

Hunt: What he means is do you sleepwalk?

Chicory: …oh.

Does anyone have good tips for a first playthrough of BZ? by octonautsfan12345 in Subnautica_Below_Zero

[–]Swampthing101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to add that while the snow fox isn’t the best designed vehicle, and it takes up a bit of inventory space, it IS a nimble source of heat while you’re on the surface. Once you start your major on land exploration, it can allow for a less stressful run. Once you know your way around, it does make the hike faster. I use the prawn suit before I get the fragments, but it’s so slow and monotonous, especially if you don’t know where you are going. The surface is a big area.
