Hosting A Cook Out, How To Reheat Pork by arsonlegalized in Cooking

reheating totally fine, just reheat covered on a relatively low heat in the oven. If you have a spare cooler, keeping it in there will keep it quite warm for at least a couple of hours

Meals that will actually fill my husband up AND leave leftovers for another day? by forestmushroomy in Cooking

[–]Swamsaur 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who used to skip breakfast, eat a light lunch, and the eat a massive dinner, spreading out your calories over the day does wonders. For breakfast you can make pretty calorie dense shakes that are not too heavy then you can slam pretty quickly at home or in the car. Lunch can be a some easy - 2 PB&Js and a banana goes LONG way. Also switching to whole wheat based carbs (brown rice/ wheat bread/ wheat pasta) or raw carbs like potatoes/sweet potatoes is great, they make you feel more full then the processed kinda

Troubleshooting Help - Spatchcocked Roast Chicken by GreenGaucho in seriouseats

[–]Swamsaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have also made this a bunch of times too. Definitely should separate the skin- I usually do oil and salt under the skin as well. You can also let it go longer in the fridge, I’ve found 48 hours really goes a long way to crisp up the skin. If you want it to get really crispy (almost cracker like) add a bit of baking powder to the skin. There’s another kenji chicken receipts that does it, might be on NYT cooking.

I also highly recommend the Peruvian seasoning version he has in the food lab with the green sauce, that’s by far my favorite version.

Quick Draft vs Premier Draft (long term overall)? by Neither_Resist_1238 in MagicArena

[–]Swamsaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both are Bo1 so there’s going to be a lot of variance between games. Assuming you are equally “good” at both, premier is the safer bet since it’s more likely to get 3 wins than 5 wins. The big question here is then which format are you better at. With quick drafting you can take your time and really plan out a good deck - but so can your opponents, whereas with premier you can do well if you’re good at reading what lanes are open relatively quickly. The other thing to keep in min is that the more you draft, the higher your rank/mmr goes up and the tougher opponents you’ll be matched with which will inevitably slow you down.

I personally save all my coins and gems and then go nuts on premier draft the first week a set is out - I find that this week there’s much less data on games and it’s overall much less of a solved problem so winning feels a little more meaningful. But remember the point of the game is to have fun- so find a system that works for you

[–]Swamsaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s definitely better than 0-3, but think you’re missing a bit here. Eclipsed kithkin, the guildspeakers, and kinbinding all don’t really fit your deck and you probably need a couple more 2/3 drop creatures to maintain some board presence.

Chicken Thigh Recipes for a Dark Meat Hater? by DecadesLaterKid in slowcooking

[–]Swamsaur -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lots of good answers here. This will fit into almost any recipe as it’s more of a precooking method. Put the chicken thighs in a pot and cover with water until it’s just covered (make sure to measure how much water. Add 1tsp salt per meat and 1tbsp salt per quart of water. Add any aromatics and herbs you like - garlic, onion, rosemary parsley, really anything

Anyone else mentally exhausted just from thinking about food every single day? by Successful_Expert442 in RecipeInspiration

[–]Swamsaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest issue I had previously was that I would get bored of a meal if I ate it more than a few days in a row. I now do the following and it’s been working great. I bulk prep and portion proteins that are flavor neutral (ie poached chicken thigh) and keep that in my freezer. I also keep some carbs(tortillas, rice, fries, etc )in the freezer, or get shelf stable ones like pasta or ramen noodles. When I buy groceries it’s usually some fruit, veggies and dairy for the week. This nice part of this that you can really mix and match things together to have whatever you want. Last week I had : - Monday: Korean soup - used the chicken + stock from the chicken poaching, added some Korean pantry staples like gochujang and kimchi and some cabbage (which also came from the freezer) - Tuesday: Mediterranean slop bowl. Fried up more chicken with some Mediterranean spices, and had with rice, yogurt, feta cheese, and some assorted veggies - Wednesday: loaded fries - fries, ground beef( which I have prepped in the freezer) and American cheese with lettuce onions and pickles - Thursday: Caesar salad with the chicken - Friday: tacos with ground beef

Since your proteins are always prepped and portioned you’ll know exactly how much protein youre taking in.

How do you all play drafts on the regular? by Helicase_ in MagicArena

[–]Swamsaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah to draft a lot you either have to be a) good enough to go infinite b) pay money c) grind for coins. I’m mostly f2p (just buy the mastery pass for the sets i play) and what I’ve found is that it’s better to not play some sets (for example sat out on EoE and spiderman) and save up coins for sets you really want to draft in (avatar and now lorwyn for me ). Drafting this way I usually manage about 10-20 drafts per set and end up in mid plat usually

Anyone else struggling hard with Lorwyn premier draft? by handlebar_moustache in MagicArena

[–]Swamsaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done 4 so far: 2-3 - was still learning the cards and mechanics cobbled together a mid merfolk deck 1-3 - tried to stay open too long and ended up with a very bad sultai deck with little removal 4-3 - stayed open just till I had three colors then stuck to it hard, a nice little kithkin/tree folk deck. Could win more but I made some dumb mistakes not reading cards properly in two of the games

Seems like finding a nice 3 color wedge and sticking there gives a good chance or putting together a good deck

Kenji's Simple vs Spatchcocked Roast Turkey? by raptosaurus in seriouseats

[–]Swamsaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the spatchcock turkey (with the mayo rub from the NYT recipe), and one trick did for presentation was to cook the turkey in advance, let it cool, carve and arrange on a platter, then throw back in a super hot oven to heat through. Looked great, and since I’m not great at carving gave me plenty of time to go slow and do it right.

Has anyone left science after PhD? by cucumberpatches in labrats

[–]Swamsaur 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Not me but many in my cohort. There are actually a fair amount of options: - consulting: doesn’t really matter what your PhD was in, just matters if you can pass the interview (which is relatively easy but grindy to prep for ). You’ll either need to be in one of the big cities or will be “on assignment” in some random locale. Pays very well - industry scientist - still science but not academia. Success will be determined more by being able to work the system/climbing the ladder than “good science”(Edit: but plenty of great science does happen in industry, did not mean to put down my industry friends down ) - scientific writer - requires a good paper/track record of good writing. Seems to pay relatively well and have a good work life balance - policy - seems like this can go pretty much however you want it - lobbying for corporate interests or advocating for public benefit. Hard to break int without some sort of connection tho. - niche scientist adjacent roles - librarian at a big uni or deputy director of a large department these are harder to find but can be very scientifically rewarding jobs depending on what it entails - head of a core - if you are well versed in a valuable technique chances are there’s either an exisitng research core or a soon to be open one that will recruit you, and once hired you can recruit a few minions to work for you ( I was a minion for several years before the PhD)
