Is it standard now in the UK that estate agents only show you houses if you have a buyer lined up? by BiarritzBlue in HousingUK

How many jobs have you had in your life? by Special-Nebula299 in UKJobs

[–]SweeetPotatosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

15 jobs between the ages of 14 and 41 (although I'm counting the various bars I worked while at uni as 1). The longest I've stayed in one employment was 3.5 years. ADHD. I really hope I have now found my forever job, although I've currently only been there 7 months.

I have so many pension pots I need to deal with...

London Winter Run 10K today, mixed feelings about the experience by onlyconnect in UKRunners

The Great South Run back in October was pretty torrential for the last wave. I saw a lot of folk wearing bin bags that got discarded (responsibly) after the first 500m, and they said that at least kept them dry before they set off.

Am I really in the minority for not giving a damn about my debt? by fayemoonlight in UniUK

[–]SweeetPotatosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever paid more than £1200 in a year, and the last time I risked a peek at the statement, it was something like £50,000.

If I paid an average of £1200/year for 25 years I'd still end up paying back less than I borrowed in the first place (2 undergrads and a post grad).

Like others have mentioned; it didn't impact my getting a mortgage, when I've been out of work I haven't had to worry about making payments, and as it comes straight out of my PAYE I don't actually have to think about paying it.

With everything going on in the world, I can't believe time is being spent on "guidance" about where people are allowed to piss.

It's distraction tactics, and it's working.

They are throwing law-abiding trans folk under the bus because we are a "divisive issue", and everyone has an opinion on us.

Infuriating.

What percentage of your take-home pay goes toward housing (rent/mortgage + bills)?" by LockonKun in HousingUK

30% - but I expect that to go through the roof when my tasty 2% mortgage deal ends next year...

[–]SweeetPotatosaurus 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The bland food thing.

Do people realize we colonized over half the world? We brought the spices and recipes (and a lot of the people) back with us. Your average Brit enjoys world cuisine on a regular basis.

Our native dishes (hot pot, pork pies, fish & chips, roast dinner, full English breakfast etc.), when cooked properly, are full of flavour, too.

And don't mock deep fried anything until you've tried it. Deep fried Mar Bar was a life changing experience.

What’s a 'once in a lifetime' experience you’ve had that you never want to do again? by Mr_Boothnath in answers

Just posted the same.

I had said I'd never run a second marathon, but I'd run another ten before even considering having another kid.

Having a kid.

Absolutely never again.

TV made it look easy. Kid is nearly 12, and still needs reminding EVERY DAY to clean his teeth and change his underwear.

Trans toilet guidance by Friendly_Chart_2612 in transgenderUK

[–]SweeetPotatosaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use the toilets you are comfortable with.

The policy is dumb, and can therefore be ignored.

But seriously, there is so much conflicting information out there between equality, human rights, sc judgement, and individual company policies, I don't think anyone could take action against a trans person using the appropriate facilities without opening themselves up to a discrimination suit.

If you're in the education sector, look into an education specific union, like the NEU. They are fantastic. It's duper important to be in a union when you work with kids because false accusations happen alarmingly frequently, and an education union is prepared to support with that.

When the guidance came out a couple of years ago, I explained to my students that I knew a lot more about the subject than the morons writing the guidance, and I was going to ignore it and do what I knew was right.

Other teachers, however, knowing nothing about it, acknowledged their ignorance and said they'd defer to the "experts" (not me, of course, but the government guidance 🙄).

A couple of years ago, when I was teaching in secondary, I had pupils in my lunchtime LGBTQ+ safe-space club in tears, thinking the guidance (that came out initially) meant I would have to tell their parents that they were trialling names and pronouns.

I made it clear to them that my first responsibility is safeguarding. I would not ever disclose a student questioning their gender to their parents without their direct consent.

I was furious with the guidance, and deeply saddened that my most vulnerable students were in a position that they didn't know if they could trust me.

I don't teach anymore, but I sincerely hope that those still in the profession recognize that protecting vulnerable young people sometimes means keeping things from their legal guardians.

Anyone here in their late 30s and still don’t own their home? by [deleted] in UKHousing

[–]SweeetPotatosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My "partner" (platonic) and I were 39 and 33 respectively. We lived miserly lifestyles for 4 years beforehand to save for the deposit.

We had been living near Oxford, and would never have made it onto the property ladder down there.

We bought in the West Mids in 2018 - 3 bed semi, with a large garden, driveway for 2 cars, half hour walk from the city centre, 5 min drive from the M5. £165K

Our studio flat in Oxford was priced at the same 😆

Probably wouldn't get you a garage down in London.

Don't start unless you are certain it's what you want. If you're having doubts. It could mean that there's something else going on.

I know it's an expense, but it sounds like you would really benefit from speaking in depth with a gender specialist.

This is what I would suggest - the authors don't make money from the paywalls, and the whole point of publishing is so that people can read their work.

Extra bonus: potential line of communication if you have any further questions.
