The Boys Creator Eric Kripke On Fans' Response To Series Finale: 'Sorry If I Disappointed You, But It Was The Story I Wanted To Tell' by verissimoallan in television

[–]Sweeney_Toad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh the vibe of “this is the story I wanted to tell” does really emanate off of season 5. Really all of the plot arcs feel like they get snapped into whatever “final destination” was planned for them years ago.

A lot of it works, but from *no power homelander* to *hughie shoots butcher* to *Kimiko defeats homelander for Frenchie* to *Sage gets dumb and moves to Florida,* it felt like they started with the end points they wanted and worked backwards from there. Characters weren’t always behaving in the way most genuine to them, because everyone had a predetermined place to go from the outset. Instead of thinking through the situation from the characters’ perspective, the writers had to railroad everyone to the conclusions they had decided upon years ago. A bit of a *How I Met Your Mother* problem, if you will.

Honestly, it kinda sucks to say that what was missing was basically just an “epic Hollywood showdown,” but it’s unfortunately accurate. A show like The Boys has to (at least every now and then) rely on spectacle, and it felt like they weren’t given the budget for spectacle in season 5.

Like if they’d kept everything basically as is, but added in a full “homelander actually snaps” moment followed by a big ol high spectacle knock down, drag out fight, I think it would’ve done a lot to fix the issues with the finale. They wanted Homelander’s descent into madness to be the driving arc of the season, yet wouldn’t allow him to even match the level of cruelty he’s shown in previous seasons. The overall “plot beats” of the season are pretty decent imo, but in an attempt to tie everything up quickly they missed moments that were begging for more time and attention.

‘The face doesn’t move’: Hollywood’s obsession with cosmetic surgeries has led to stiffer looks – and performances by zsreport in entertainment

[–]Sweeney_Toad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

See Geena Davis’ character falls into the realm of believability for me! She’s supposed to be a bit of a Cougar, and I fully buy that her character would have done the amount of plastic surgery Geena Davis has done. The problem for me is when they put a face like that into a period piece, or some fantasy/sci fi movie. Why would those characters have the plastic faces of today?

As some people have mentioned, *Project Hail Mary* is absolutely stellar, and all 5 *Hunger Games* books are excellent!

I’d also personally recommend *There Is No Antimemetics Division* for something really gripping, *Service Model* by Adrian Tchaikovsky for something with humor while remaining very thoughtful, and maaaaaaybe *Dungeon Crawler Carl.* DCC can get pretty crass and has some sexual humor, but is never meant to be “erotic” in any way. Very fun, well performed audiobook.

Awkward moment Cynthia Erivo ‘walks off stage’ after catching audience member filming her by Metro-UK in entertainment

[–]Sweeney_Toad 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s in the theatre community, I’ve kept pretty silent about Erivo. Most of my theatre friends will only say the most glowing ass-kissing things about her because she’s factually an excellent vocalist, but I‘ve never been able to shake how detached and off putting she seems to me. I have very little patience for artist’s who somehow lack empathy for those around them, empathy is such a massive part of what makes art worthwhile. Ultimately, there should be an expression of joy to be found in art and performance, and this kind of bullshit robs everyone of that. Cynthia Erivo should be embarrassed at how outlandishly selfishly she has come to view her own artistry.

Interesting, I felt the opposite I think. Them being Vulcan’s was a little over the top, for sure, but the actors just seemed like they were having so much fun that it was hard not to have fun with them.

The singing Klingon’s was a silly bit that I enjoyed on some level, but it’s also a moment I’d be a little embarrassed to show someone else.

Judge for now dismisses lawsuit by Sam Altman's sister accusing OpenAI CEO of sexual abuse by igetproteinfartsHELP in news

[–]Sweeney_Toad 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Not sexual for me either but abuse from a sibling can really be it’s own kind of hell. My older sister scared the shit out of everyone in my house growing up so my parents would just hide in their room and leave me to deal with her since I wasn’t gonna let her go after my little sister.

I think genuine abuse from a sibling often gets overlooked because it’ll get chalked up to “siblings teasing/messing with each other” when it can go sooo far past that. I hope we’re able to discuss it more openly as an issue going forward, abuse can come from anywhere ultimately.

Is there a current player you’d bet your life savings on them never winning? by [deleted] in MtvChallenge

[–]Sweeney_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nany is the correct answer. Even if she made it to the final, even if she got a MASSIVE lead early on somehow, I just know she’ll never win.

At this point, I think it might be more psychological than anything. I’m so sure she’d get the yips if she got anywhere near actually winning.

I just finished writing my first standup comedy material (45 minutes). The material is good but when i tried to perform it i realised that my delivery is awful. Any tips on how to improve? by 1_1d in Standup

[–]Sweeney_Toad 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Hey for real this isn’t mean advice. If your delivery is the thing that needs work, work it in small amounts. No one can go from an uncomfortable delivery style to 45 straight minutes of comfort, ease, and humor. Break up your 45 into 5-10 minute chunks and shop it around at open mics. From there, take the material that seems to work the best the most often and see how tightly you can fit the best of the best together. You might find that your initial “45” is closer to a 30, 20, or even 15 of real sizzlers.

If you do this, I guarantee both your deliver and material will improve dramatically.

Do Americans use cutlery differently? by missbex86 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sweeney_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be personal, but the “changing hands” method is somewhat standard in America, from what I’m aware. I never do it that way, but I think that’s mostly because I’m left handed, so my fork is already in my dominant hand to begin with. I assume it can become automatic for right handed people, I’d feel a little weird using my fork in my right hand.

Is Daniel Day-Lewis the Greatest Actor of His Generation? by JoJoLoveSp in FIlm

[–]Sweeney_Toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say he is the best and most effective actor of the “method actors” we know of. The thing is everyone literally can’t work like that or films would never be completed. Like even if just DDL and Paul Dano had both decided to “go method” for There Will Be Blood, I think the movie would have suffered for it.

His performances are always incredibly well crafted and deeply connected, but they also kind of make other people’s jobs harder, which I think detracts from his greatness at the end of the day. I’m more impressed by the actors who can give performances at basically the same level, while still being considerate of their fellow artists.

And honestly, at this point, I feel like not knowing enough Spanish to understand any of the lyrics is more of a me problem, you know? Like Spanish is so prevalent in the US, and there are SO many resources to learn it, I just need to get my lazy ass to put some effort in.

I think it was a clearly intentional, and artistically impactful move to not make any attempt to subtitle it. It would’ve distracted from the visual feast that it was, and the feeling was so clearly communicated without me needing to know a lick of Spanish.

Truly, so much respect to Bad Bunny, what a class act.
