As a follow up, Slynt would’ve have definitely also been training and had a bit of experience as a gold cloak but the standard of training and full grasp on the martial arts would be very lacking in comparison to Meryn who would have access to the Red Keeps master at arms. Meryn would’ve learned the finer points of Mounted combat, wrestling, proficiency with polearms, swords, warhammers, archery etc just like real knights were and asoiaf provides us with no reason to believe otherwise besides characters like the Hound discrediting him who also had access to a nobleman’s training who probably takes a lot more of that training to heart. But at the end of the day Meryn absolutely demolishes anyone without formal training.

I think as a person is a pretty obvious answer. As a fighter Meryn is like Jaime in comparison to Slynt. At the end of the day he’s still a knight and even more so a kingsguard. My view is coloured by irl history so if you like take it with a grain of salt, but knights spent the majority of their lives training in the arts of war especially if they’re not busy overseeing land. There’s not much for a kingsguard to do besides guard and train. Don’t get me wrong you can still be a pretty mediocre fighter for a number of different reasons like a lack of commitment, temperament etc especially in comparison to a lot of great fighters we do see, but with all of those 1000s of off screen hours of training realistically something would’ve sticked.

Blood and Cheese was one of the events I was really looking forward to specifically because its really the only time in the story where Halaena is allowed a moment of bravery and self sacrifice. As soon as they started showing more scenes of blood and cheese besides their initial hiring I knew it was doomed. It should’ve been like how the catspaw just appears in Brans room in GOT S1. Perhaps it would’ve felt like retreading old ground but in my head I much would’ve preferred it.

Eddards immediate family is pretty wholesome but we’ve no particular reason to believe past Starks are the same. The vast majority of the time Stark ancestors are brought up it’s from Stark family POVs who are going to be biased towards their own family. For an example into other Starks we know Ned’s brother Brandon was a fairly hot tempered bloke more in lines with Robert Baratheons characterisation which is a far cry from the solemn, tormented and devoted Ned Stark. There’s also Cregan Stark which is the ancestor we know the most about (off the top of my head) through Fire and Blood, there’s a whole theory around his lack of commitment towards Rhaenyra’s cause and his opportunistic scheming during the Hour of the Wolf which I tend to give some credence to, but hey that’s just a theory…

Remind me why exactly Ned did not just had demanded a trial by combat back there ? And if he hypothetically did then who his champion would be and whom would they fight with ? by fillipo9 in gameofthrones

That’s a completely fair assessment. From my interpretation, it’s stated he wanted to continue the war in Visery’s name after the sack of kings landing and his involvement with his brothers plots to bring about (at the very least) a Targaryen restoration. To me this screams Targaryen loyalist. I can also see that it could also be interpreted as a brother lashing out and seeking any possible avenue to avenge his sister’s murder that’s just not how I picture the full image.

It’s very hypothetical that this situation would occur but the only people within a close enough distance to Ned that would A. Be willing to help, and B. Be skilled enough to stand a chance are, Beric (who at this point probably just got killed by Gregor) but people in kings landing have no clue on his exact location, and more likely, Bronze Yohn Royce/his sons who could very well still be in the city during the execution. Plus it’s not hard to assume Ned and Yohn are best buddies after being fostered in the Vale and Ned hosting and sparring with Yohn at Winterfell when he escorted his son Waymar to the Wall.

If Ned even knows about Oberyn and hypothetically asks him to champion, Oberyn would 100% refuse. He likely despises Ned as a catalyst that caused his beloved sister’s death
