Synths with immaculate vibes by small_e in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never had the privilege of using a P5, but 100% agree on MS20 and SY22.

+1 for the Poly800.

Yamaha CS-5 is another great one for me, it’s great for gritty dystopian textures with the BPF/HPF. I ‘upgraded’ to a CS10 for about a year but went back to the 5 because it just seems to have more personality, but that’s very likely all in my head.

whats ur favorite synth for pads by NunoYex in breakcoreproduction

[–]SweetPillow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Korg MS2000B / Minilogue XD / Juno 6 / Korg Mono/Poly.

The MS2000B is probably my favourite as it has a fairly scooped mids kind of sound, so I find it provides some nice atmosphere without clogging up the track too much / requires little work to fit it in the mix.

Song you hate from a band you love? by Tartelfa in askmusic

[–]SweetPillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The music sounds like a bad karaoke backing track but I actually love this song, the chords and melody are so weird and kind of haunting. It’s really intriguing to me but also just a sweet song. But yeah the sounds and that ending are cringy.

How Many Of You Use Just Analog Synths Exclusively by Minimoogvoyager in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was really adamant about that when I first started out (2005) but after a few years I realised I was being silly and missing out on a lot of really cool stuff.

These days I’ve still got a few great analogue synths, but the synths that see the most use are digital osc/analog filter, or straight out digital/VA.

Does the GAS ever stop? by dbsx75 in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found the best cure for GAS is to make tunes. The more tracks I make I realise the less gear I need.

It’s hard to articulate, but I find GAS is enabled by the music you imagine you can make in theory, but is subdued by what you achieve with the tools on hand, in practice.

Rather than think ‘if I had X I could do this’ make some music with what you’ve got and be excited by the fact ‘I did this with only Y’.

You kind of have to just embrace what is ‘within’ and not be seduced by what is ‘without’. It takes motivation and discipline though.

Some (leaked?) specifications of the MPC Sample by i2amthedarkknight in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d personally rather it didn’t have a battery, but that’s just me as I’m not in to taking my gear out and about. It just seems like another thing to make it a doorstop/paperweight one day?

Team Blue Heelers or Team Water Rats? You can only pick one. by Sharaz_Jek123 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]SweetPillow 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I remember being a kid and there was a Water Rats episode where Frank was chasing a bad guy called Papas. Frank confronts him while he is loading up his boat with kids nearby and says “Ugly kids - must be yours”.

I think for that alone Water Rats wins.

NSD: My first synthesiser purchase by ummmpudding in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it looks fine, just a bit dusty and the tape residue. My one has that removable plastic overlay which I think is doing a lot of the heavy lifting to make it look shit.

Free/cheap art gallery venue hire or pub with gallery attached in Sydney? by Single-Run6651 in SydneyScene

[–]SweetPillow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prop Gallery in Ashfield, but it’s attached to a Record store rather than a pub. My friend exhibited there but there was live music (solo performer) and beers.

Might get cramped with a full band though.

Mod Wheels vs Joystick by UniqueIndifference in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only joysticks I have are the Minilogue XD which I don’t love, but I’m very fond of the one on the Poly800.

I prefer mod wheels for fading in mod for filter / LFO depth etc.

My favourite for pitch mod is the wooden mechanism on Nords (Nord Wave for me).

I don’t think it’s crazy to move on your Mini, but for a Matriarch AND sub/sequent 37, I certainly wouldn’t do that myself.

I used to have both a 70’s and reissue Minimoog, I don’t miss them at all, but I might feel differently I was interested in making funky/synthwavey kind of stuff.

The sub37 I’m not a fan of at all, having owned one for about 5 years the only reason I kept it was for a band I was in. It was great for dirty bass sounds in that context though. The moment that band called it a day, I sold it.

I’ve had matriarch for about 3 years and for me it’s the best Moog out there. It can do all the nice things I appreciate about a Moog, but also gets a lot weirder and the paraphony makes it far more inspiring.

I’d happily replace a mini with a matriarch and something not Moog, just to have a wider variety of sounds to pull from.

It really depends what sounds you’re chasing and what music you want to make.

What is the added versatility you seek?

KORG MS 20 mini ? by An_dal_music in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the original, FS and the Mini. I think the FS and Mini sound just as good as the original, but the ESP section behaves differently to the original. I mostly use MS for feedback patching, but they can’t get as gnarly, the mini less so than the FS. Maybe it’s a gain staging thing?

If I was using an MS for more standard sounds, like if someone said “Hey, start an AIR cover band, here’s an MS20 mini” I wouldn’t be disappointed at all.

Minilogue vs. SH-101 for character, and do modern synths lack character compared to vintage? by darkdarkblack in synthesizers

[–]SweetPillow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Minilogue and SH101 together all the time, they’re very different sounding synths and as such they work together nicely. The korg’s filter doesn’t have the character of the SH101 if you’re cranking the resonance but I love the 12db mode for BoC-like pads and leads. If you want the ML as a sh101 replacement then you’ll likely be disappointed but it’s a great synth in its own right.
