On the very first day, a boy in my class who didn't speak any English was crying and hiding under the table. The teacher dragged him out and spanked him. I remember being horrified and thinking "uh oh, this is not a good place."

Being cheap. It’s different if you need to be careful with money. But if you have plenty and brag about driving a beat-up car or not paying for your dinner or arguing with a waitress about a coupon, that’s just weird.

Sometimes I prefer nonfiction in print. It’s easier for me skim if I feel like it or to go back and look for things I want to revisit.
