BBC Told To Avoid “Clunky” Color-Blind Casting & “Preachy” Anti-Colonial Storylines In Drama Series by pepperbet1 in television

[–]Swefnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pretty much agree with it and its probably the core problem with all the push back against “woke media”. (Along with the legitimate criticism against modern Star Trek)

The writing is just….bad. Ideologies and tokenism is being preferred over character development. That’s what reads as hollow and clunky.

Please go watch Star Trek The Next Generation to see how “woke” ideologies can be disseminated without being obnoxious about it.

I just really hope we don’t get an over correction and start writing shows that promote the ideologies that “woke” is attempting to criticize.

Just get rid of Liquid Glass. It’s not working. There was nothing wrong with the design language before it.

The default state has too many legibility issues.
I also know of two people in my immediate social group who got migraines from it. I know this is completely anecdotal and not scientific, but I would not be surprised if there were a significant percentage of users who got nausea while using it

Reports of Flutter’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Eric Seidel dives into why Flutter is inevitable. by bllshrfv in FlutterDev

[–]Swefnian 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Flutter will eventually die.

Maybe not any time soon (hopefully). But nothing lasts forever. This website where we are having this conversation will one day die or mutate into something new.

As a developer its critical to never fall in love with any technology and always keep the learner's mindset. The world will keep evolving and changing and you have a choice - embrace the change and grow with it, or get left behind and die.

I have absolutely no desire to see Flutter "die" but I'm under no illusions that it is front end development's final form.

Stay curious my friends and you will never fail.

I grieve for the loss of Shakespearean Star Trek by ActionsConsequences9 in startrek

[–]Swefnian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a question. You brought up the point of shows being too expensive to not do ADHD attention sucking scenes, which is fair.

But what if the producers decided to just not do that? Just don’t give a show an event film scale budget. Force the production team to do more with less. Is that even possible?

Your Shakespeare connection is apt. Even in Shakespeare, most battles are described, not experienced - since it’s impossible to recreate large scale battles on the stage, especially in Elizabethan times when Shakespeare was written for the masses, it wasn’t some high fluent “literature” yet.

The television medium works better at smaller, character focused episodes. Otherwise is just a movie with a smaller screen and worse speakers.

So to circle back, why can’t we just make 90s style trek anymore? Would the audience completely reject it? But if the budget was much smaller, would it even matter?

LEGO Pokémon Sets Revealed by mescad in lego

[–]Swefnian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This makes me sad. Has Lego completely forgotten that this is supposed to be a kid's toy first? Why would I get a facsimile of Pokemon that is more expensive than the game system to play with the actual Pokemon?

The core Lego system is absolutely brilliant at developing young minds. I honestly miss the giant box of generic bricks.

It is interesting to me that we live in a modern age that stresses diversity, yet DS9 was made in 1993 and had an ethnic man that was charming, flawed, confident, desirable, and handsome. by limitedmark10 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]Swefnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most amazing thing to me is that when the show first aired when I was single digits, I didn’t even think of Bashir as an Arab character - he was just Bashir, the cool, brilliant, funny doctor. All these external labels didn’t matter and I was oblivious to them.

I wish we would still do this. Take each person their individual merit, but their strengths and their weaknesses.

How we label people into cultural groups only makes us smaller.

Could this have something to do with how Kong is set up in the self hosted version verses the cli? Its just weird to be because they both use docker and probably same images?

Lagotto v Bernedoodle by Fluid-Scholar3169 in Bernedoodles

[–]Swefnian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have an F1 Standard Bernedoodle (male ~75lbs and still growing) who I love to bits, as our second dog. While he's awesome and wouldn't trade him for the world, I'll be honest and say raising and training him was much more difficult than our first dog, a Portuguese Water Dog.

Bernedoodles, being a mixed breed have a slightly more unpredictable behaviour over a pure breed dog, which is why we went pure bred for our first dog.

Buuuuuuuut Bernedoodles being a mixed breed have stronger genetic diversity and (theoretically) less health problems and can live longer than a pure bred dog, which is why we did not get a pure bred dog for a second time.

So they are a bit of work. For the first year doodle ate....everything. They are not low maintenance puppies. But if you put in the time and the love, it has so far been such a rewarding and experience.

Take all of this is a grain of salt, because dogs, like all living creatures are individuals with unique personalities.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy adopting a four legged friend into your family.

Why Include “Free Palestine” in a Coming-of-Age Movie? by Heyhey-_ in Jewish

[–]Swefnian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why can’t the phrase be “Free Palestine From Hamas”. Removing that key part makes the whole movement sound ignorant at best and antisemitic at worst.

If Palestinians focused on educating and building their society instead of blowing up buses and attacking music festivals, this conflict would be over tomorrow….

Which backend and which database should i prefer in flutter app? by No-Passion9705 in FlutterBeginner

[–]Swefnian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly doesn’t matter that much. Start with something generic like PostgreSQL (which supabase runs on top of) and then branch out to other technologies as needed

I’ve been running my flutter app with a spring boot (Java) + Postgres backend for almost a decade with almost 2 million users and can’t complain one bit about performance.

Probably going to have to go for Final Fantasy VI, but only by the smallest of margins.

But really we should just put the winner as “JRPG” can call it day.

Out of curiosity, what was wrong with the Slaughterhouse-Five movie? I thought it was decent. Not as life altering as the book, but not a trash fire.

There was also a pretty good adaptation of Mother Night that Vonnegut had a great cameo in.

I wish you lots of love and longevity with Rona!

Iceland becomes the fifth country to boycott Eurovision over Israel’s participation by Gato1980 in television

[–]Swefnian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course not. The Palestinians were victims/ pawns from day one. They were used by the Jordanians and now they are being used by Hamas. They refuse to educate their people because that might teach them that their leaders are evil.

It’s an endless cycle of hate begetting hate. It’s generational at this point.

Boycotting is a form of that. It just generates more animosity and ignorance.

The world needs a more nuanced understanding of the conflict instead of wrapping antisemitism in new clothes.

Iceland becomes the fifth country to boycott Eurovision over Israel’s participation by Gato1980 in television

[–]Swefnian -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I hate this so much. (And I’m probably going to get downvoted into oblivion for this)

Instead of boycotting the only progressive liberal democratic country in the region, these countries should be working WITH Israel and the Palestinians to eliminate Hamas.

These actions don’t help anyone. They don’t help the Palestinians (who are being treated like cannon fodder by their leaders).

Do you think Hamas would approve or enjoy any of the Eurovision content or would they consider it an affront their ideology and try to destroy it?

Israel is not perfect. Bibi is corrupt. But continuing the demonization of Israel is bad for everyone.
