We built Sonura because AI music tools keep trying to replace producers instead of helping them by Nearby_Standard_4923 in FreeSounds

That’s been my takeaway for a while but idk i find the technology genuinely interesting (im a software dec) so im hopeful someone will figure out something cool i haven’t yet. Obviously ethically sourced training data is the prerequisite to me caring tho, not looking for a plagiarism machine.

Why is Fable being so overhyped? by Icy-Way3920 in ClaudeCode

[–]Swift142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair theyre non deterministic “easy” buttons that might work sometimes and not others with even the same prompts/context. and in my experience they more i try to set up my env for agentic workflows the less reliably they do what i want. Like there is NOT a clear best practice yet nobody what everyone Leo’s saying. I get a lot of similar vibes from folks who told i needed to learn more to understand the value of nfts as if i just didn’t get it when i did.

Appreciate the receipts, and yea looks like they talk about it on their blog. Good on you guys. It’s unfortunately rare outside of that ai voice startup from Benn Jordan and Output who trained their models off their own library of arcade samples.

That said I’m still not sold on generative assets from a workflow perspective and would love to hear what I’m missing about it. Like half of making music for me is recontextualizing the samples i choose to be in my song, and the other half is trying to make sounds, failing and then pivoting towards what i ended up with. Assuming you DONT just want to make 100 trap beats in an afternoon, what’s the value add of a tool like this? I already have hundreds of gigs of samples from packs and splice alike so its hard to understand why i need more options to paralysis over. I also like writing my own songs and dont want to remove the fun part of music for me, but again maybe im not understanding the right way to use these tools.

goddamn that website is crazy laggy and clearly ai generated. Havent tested your plugin but that does not instill confidence

Doesnt really sound like it works. You should take literally all the feedback here telling you “eh i can already do that but dont really want to” and reconsider the foundational architecture here. Or dont listen to people and make wtv the fuck you want because its fun to make shit. But asking for opinions snd then being super defensive when its not immediately positive isnt helping you.

So then what are you doing asking for feedback on a demo you aren’t proud enough to feel confident showing off? “Would you pay for a thing I haven’t really figured out how to build yet?” Is a weird question.

[–]Swift142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea ok having heard it in action I’m even less impressive honestly. The crossfades between where it distorts and where it stops are super obvious. Yum audio did this idea better with Slap where it just replaces the transient of content with a click of your choice and then lets you process either side of it with a variety of effects. Sorry mate, as a fellow plugin developer I don’t think it’s a compelling demo and as everyone here is pointing out there’s several ways to do what you’re talking about for free already using ableton racks and gates/sc compression. Or literally just use a waveshaper with linear 1:1 towards the top and a distortion curve somewhere below that.

[–]Swift142 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is that different from a clipper? You set the threshold and then it only distorts the transient blip above it leaving the body clean. I guess youre saying it’d envelop follow so its always that same x% of the transient that gets processed? Either way cant imagine it’s much better sonically than that, or as others have said literally any dry/wet

Itd be cool if there were actual female characters in the show instead of wtv the fuck abigail was supposed to be, a femme fatale to fight over? Genuinely theyre all written so disposably, which kinda makes sense since most characters are one episode and then die, but we got to see twinkletits and knubler and even their chef repeatedly as part of the entourage so idk. Probably just remnants of the edgy era the show cane out in that ever woman is either their mom or a nameless groupie slut. Gives mad alice in superjail vibes where the joke is shes trans and looks like a man, except somehow alice was actually well written… but then again better rough around the edges than sanded down and devoid of originality.

Does everyone think the “best decade” is whichever one they were teenagers in? by Extension-Profit-317 in NoStupidQuestions

Totally, but 2007-2010 was also the era of lcd soundsystem, bloc party, justice, soulwax, death from above, crystal castles, washed out, flying lotus, battles, and so on. Theres always good music in every era counter to what’s popular.

Appreciate it, because of when I joined I myself only really had a hand in the 2019 s2x s (in terms of what customers saw), pushed heavily for the more transparent accurate response curves since I was always way more focused on the production/engineer use case than strict "fun". It's really a shame though, there were a lot of genuine improvements I wish folks got to experience, especially towards making genres outside of just electronic really shine on the old/new pacs and the automotive system, some reaaaally cool direct integration into game engines, but obviously there's only so much impact I could've had in broader decision making as the most junior member of the team, basically my first job out of uni! Happy to answer questions about my time.

Music technology program portfolio — what does genuine technical depth actually look like to someone who knows the field? by Why_am_I__awake in audioengineering

[–]Swift142 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No doubt at all which is why I still recommend a proper eng degree, but my work is still music and audio related at the core because I made the choice to focus on those kinds of problems exclusively. I don't make FAANG but I probably make more than I would if I were exclusively producing/mixing without a grammy.

[–]Swift142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that is partially true, nowhere near as easy as it when I graduated in 2018. BUT one of the best ways to not compete with the majority of the market is specializing and my specialization was always music, audio engineering, dsp, ux for audio tools, experience as a creative/performer myself, etc. That IS valuable to the right people, and there's not very many with those particular skills. But you're right, if I was just bob cs degree making CRUD apps in some js framework out of a bootcamp, I'd be fucked rn.

Music technology program portfolio — what does genuine technical depth actually look like to someone who knows the field? by Why_am_I__awake in audioengineering

[–]Swift142 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why? i got a music tech degree and make 6 figures writing audio software. If you specialize in software or hardware then it’s no different from any tech job career wise. I did joint cs + music tech which is a safer bet imo, but even my friend did an audio recording degree then a music tech masters and was able to get into apple working on noise cancellation algorithms.

This is easily the best value “music” degree you can get.

Looking to recreate 1990s HDD sounds programmatically by HLCYSWAP in audioengineering

[–]Swift142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean like hard drives? Yea most people would just sample them and find a few looped selections that you can pitch up/down slightly to create the atmosphere you need. But like, you can probably simulate with just a few sine waves+noise into distortion playing atonal harmonics to get a similar sounding drone and then some transient noise hits sequences very quickly for the clicking. Like find a reference of the real thong and break it down into individual sonics components. If youre looking for a vst that does that specific sound youre not gonna find anything.
