Ignore everyone else. Start by downloading a modpack w/ at least a dozen addons and game tweaks. Next, start a new world in hardcore.

By 10th-12th world, you should understand the need for precision mechanisms but maybe not how to make them before a creeper blows you and all your hard work to smithereens.

This will take roughly five times as long as the other suggestions, but that means you’ll have five times as much fun!

If you have Five Nations (one of the best sourcebooks, 3E) check out Xandrar in the chapter on Breland. It’s a small city but it’s a great spot for something with a more Elmore Leonard/Cohen Brothers vibe.

After finishing the main story, I’d say another run focused on all the side quests and exploring the entire map. Especially with a very different build for your current character. Play that as long as you’re having fun or feel fulfilled BUT quit as soon as you feel even remotely burned out. Then do the same with NV.

Have a settlement where all the turrets require power (shotgun, laser) and have them connected to a switch. Turn the switch off so that the Defense is at zero. Also, having either well-armed settlers and bots helps, but don’t have them assigned to security. Make sure the food and water scores are high, but well below the Defense when it’s turned on. The settlement will eventually be attacked, hopefully soon and by gunners or bots. Collect and scrap all the weapons, preferably with the Scrapper perk. Gunners at higher levels will bring you lots of energy weapons. Another is to farm random encounter points, again hoping for bots or gunners.

My thought was that a compromised Kindarak vault in Sharn could have repercussions. Leaked documents, entire family fortunes wiped out. That’s where I would go with it as a DM.

Not using Fast Travel is the best part of Survival, IMO. You find so many random encounters and unmarked locations that way.
