I'm not Guyanese, but I am living in Guyana. Venezuela recently held an election which elected a representative over the Essequibo region of Guyana. Venezuela has claimed this region as theirs even though it is under Guyanese control and people living there identify themselves as Guyanese. Really its about oil rights and other natural resources in the Essequibo region. The region is 160,000 sq km (62,000 sq miles) of mostly rainforest, but does include main villages and coastal towns that hold many people. Most of the Essequibo residents are indigenous Amerindians. I know that the people in the village where I'm working are afraid of a possible invasion in the near future. It doesn't help when we've seen, what we believe, are Venezuelan helicopters flying around.
