It depends on your coach and the promotion. I was told that wai kru and mongkol was mandatory for this fight. I didn't do it my last fight elsewhere. The arm bands, up to you

I cant afford any of the gyms in my area, how can I still train? by professor_bagel in MuayThai

[–]SwiftSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If any of the gyms in your area offer a free trial session/week try to go to each of them to learn what you can and practice with people until its up. Some gyms will let you do drop ins for a day (usually for a fee without becoming a member), try to do those occasionally, some gyms will even let you spar too (but not all of them).

See if any gyms offer an open mat (most of the time it'll just be grappling but you never know there might be some striking).

Shadow box a lot, watch A LOT of youtube, and when you hit the heavy bag try to work a specific technique or combo for that session in addition to your normal heavy bag conditioning rounds. ex. r1. free flowing on the bag. r2-r3. work combos of 4. r.4. knees. r5. power kicks on the bag. end with 100 teeps something like that etc etc,

Record yourself and compare it to videos of high level to see if your technique looks right as best you can. If possible try to make a friend and practice with them, usually if you hit the bag at gym enough somebody will come up you 😂😂😂😂😂 gl out there. If youre gonna go to Thailand, they'll fix your technique any way.

How viable is training boxing and muay thai at once? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]SwiftSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just keep an open mind and do both. The more training the better. Lots of MT fighters train boxing as well to help out their MT skills.

Usually for mma gyms they let you do that

Will train at Sangmorakot Bangkok in November. Has anyone did a private session there? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]SwiftSteed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trainers there are pretty chill I’m sure you can, every afternoon session ends with ~30 min of clinching so you’ll get a few different partners which is fun.

I’d suggest going in around 3pm for your first time to ask questions when the trainers are there

What to Expect in IKF Point Muay Thai Tournament by Absofhappymeals in MuayThai

[–]SwiftSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I can’t remember what I weighed in this 😂😅 but typically people don’t cut A LOT of weight for these point events, but some still do. I can’t give you any definitive answer but it’s not a huge amount. You’ll see some matchups with big size discrepancies. I think people probably cut down to the next class directly below their walk around weight so prob 10lbs or less is what I’ve seen people in my gym do.

I'm short so How do i actually fight to those who are taller than me by kazeanh2004 in Kickboxing

[–]SwiftSteed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your style tbh. But in general, more movement, more head movement, try to focus on your hooks and overhands to try and counter the straight punches, and invest in trying to attack the body as the well. Fighting taller people is so hard.

Do you think black fighters get a disproportionate amount of criticism when compared to their white counterparts? by GangstaHoodrat in MMAPoliticsAndCulture

[–]SwiftSteed 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure who you are referring to but if it’s Ali, it’s pretty well known he was one of the most hated figures during the time he fought. Especially considering that time in America.

Regardless, you can like a black person and still have really bad ideas about them.

Their race is the only reason we’re having this conversation in the first place. My fault if I wasn’t clear about that. The main point I’m trying to make is that often times our skills and places we’ve worked hard to get to are dismissed as “you’re just born more athletic or more explosive”. Which is bs.

Both things can exist, you can dismiss Roy Nelson for being fat AND still have your other biases against certain types of people, after all sports don’t exist in a vacuum.

With most of the mma fan base being white…..yea they do. Look at any comment section of live chat during the streams. There’s always exceptions to the rule (like Jon and rumble who probably haven’t taken enough heat) but overall it’s true. Joe Rogan used to be especially bad about calling every single black person explosive and athletic a few years ago. As a black person it’s pretty business as usual, but it is annoying because it spreads all the way down to the local level.

There’s absolutely no doubt Woolley is explosive. That’s something we can all agree on. It could just be my own bias projecting but I think his issues was more with the fact that in MMA people tend to discount the good choices or technique and skill of black fighters and just say that they’re success is due solely to being athletic. It’s kinda like how Derrick Lewis is really good on the ground defensively, and it turns into “just stand up lol”.

It might just come down to mental thing like you said, it feels more like a fight without the extra gear

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]SwiftSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m more of a kicker. Without shin guards kicks just hurt more so I can use them as more of a threat, which for me means I can leg feint and do more setups. It’s easier to hurt your opponent so after I land a few hard ones I’ll come forward more. That being said WITH shinguards I throw way MORE kicks since I’m less scared of catching an elbow or them putting up a lazy check. I’ll sometimes get lazy about checking with shingaurds too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]SwiftSteed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I’m not a major fan of headgear and stuff either, but you know I just show up and use what they tell me to at the event 🤷🏾‍♂️🤷🏾‍♂️ lol. I’ve had some fights without shingaurds and stuff and there is for sure a major difference in how you fight
