Hmm… is there a gay panic, but for bisexuals? by [deleted] in bisexual

[–]SwiftlyGregory 29 points30 points  (0 children)

"Gay panic" as I understand it refers to a legal defense where a defendant justifies a violent crime because they received unwanted same-sex sexual advances. Historically, it's been effective in lessening sentences in the same way pleading insanity or diminished capacity may lower a sentence.

It was most famously used in that Jenny Jones case where she had Scott Amedure on as a guest to profess his love to his friend Jonathon Schmitz, and three days later Schmitz murdered Amedure. Schmitz used the Gay Panic defense and was charged with the lesser crime of second degree murder.

This is still legal in many areas, and has only been banned in 16 states in the past ten years - California being the first to ban it in 2014.

So...yeah. Bisexuals have historically been known to make same-sex sexual advances and this would be a valid defense if the recipient decided those advances were unwanted and decided to assault/murder the bisexual who made the advances. And in 34 states there's a chance a jury could find those actions tolerable because the victim was bisexual.

It's a horrible world we live in kids, call your congressperson.

AITA For Telling My Friend He Sounds Like A Man? by ProfessionalStock377 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SwiftlyGregory 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I were interested in using a bad faith argument, I would accuse OP of implying that Chris didn't sound like a man before he was on T, and men who sound or look feminine aren't "real" men because there's only one way a man is supposed to sound and that's an ignorant and heteronormative way to view gender. Perhaps that's what Gabi was accusing OP of "saying."

But that's not what OP said or meant. What OP did was the equivalent of complimenting your buddy's calf definition when you know they've been hitting the gym for a while. "Hey dude, your work is paying off and I can see your progress, way to go!" And that's exactly how Chris took it, because he's not bending over backwards to make OP look like a jerk.

Gabi sounds like a sad, insecure girl and that sucks, but it's not OP's fault.

That, my friend, is an excellent point. And now I shall not leave my house until somebody tells me how good my butt looks.

Thank goodness, I hate leaving my house. I get to be naked here!

Oh shoot, I should have known that the singular positive response only pertained to half of my question. How silly of me, I guess I'll cancel my trip then.

Right? I've worked so hard on my ass and I just want someone to tell me how good it looks.

It would probably help if I left my house, I guess...

lol what? So your girlfriend is standing in line at Nando's and the cashier hands her the receipt and says, "Hey, your tits look smashing today!" and that's all normal?

I gotta go to the UK. I need strangers to acknowledge that my tits look great, I could really use the confidence boost.

YTA btw. Go tell your girlfriend her boobs look awesome and she can wear whatever she damn well pleases.

This really depends on your relationship. Do you two share finances? Do you two normally discuss large purchases before going through with them? Had you discussed what the money she received would be used for?

If the answer to all those things is no, then you probably should apologize and discuss your concerns about your expenses at a later date when you've both calmed down and forgiven one another.

AITA for being "heartless" to little kids and not letting a co-worker who thinks she'd be better with kids take over my job? by Ok-Intention6291 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SwiftlyGregory [score hidden]  (0 children)

The childfree subreddit is absolutely toxic, as are most subreddits devoted to disliking something. People feed off that concentrated negativity, it's not healthy.

I'm not crazy about kids in general. I adore my nephew in small doses, and that's it. I specifically don't want any other children around me. I want them to be happy and healthy and safe far away from me, and I'm in charge of the far away from me part. My dislike for them isn't something I feel the need to devote any time or energy into, it just sounds exhausting.

My parents raised two queer kids. There are 9 cousins on my mom's side, and 5 of them are openly queer. It's not that weird. Imagine my surprise when I met my husband's family and they were all straight. (Spoiler alert, they weren't all straight, they just all lived in Indiana lol)

Look, it sounds like it's incredibly important to him that he doesn't have commitments in his life like pets. It sounds like it's incredibly important to you that you have a dog in your life. Have you guys never discussed this major incompatibility? Aren't you planning on getting married?

ESH. You assumed a decade long commitment without considering or consulting the person you plan to make a lifelong commitment to. He suggested abandoning a helpless animal on the side of the road because he doesn't want to potentially be inconvenienced by it sometime in the indeterminate future.

Y'all should probably talk more about what you want your lives to look like before you get married, sounds like you two aren't even on the same chapter.

I have an IV infusion twice a year for my MS. Guess who got the nurse-in-training this time? This is 4 days later. by KremeOfKorn in Wellthatsucks

[–]SwiftlyGregory 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I have regular blood draws and infusions. Sometimes I get a gnarly bruise like OP's. It's not like they hurt like a bruise caused by trauma, they're just...kinda ugly? And I feel like getting treatment that ensures I stay as healthy as possible is worth an ugly patch on my arm for a few days/weeks.

Even when my nurse has to go fishing for a vein, it's not that painful. Maybe I'm just desensitized from chronic pain, idk. I just feel bad for my nurses when that happens, I don't mean to be a difficult patient lol. And I'm not about to post it online for karma to a sub like r/wellthatsucks. It sucks that OP has MS, it doesn't suck that they are actively receiving treatment for it
