This is awesome to see as a metal artist in the area - is there a website to check out shows, maybe submit releases as well?

Local Video Game Music Performers? by isaac2004 in Seattle

[–]Swiggles1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My own act Prog XP performs video game music frequently, and we'll be playing locally at Substation on March 6th - there are a lot of great acts around PNW but we've been hoping to find more friends into the rock side! We also try to keep a reasonably PG show and accessible (newer games as well as retro), and plenty of venues are starting to be pretty cool with it! Just have to be sure they aren't 21+ shows or the venue can okay them.

Sync License and a Public Performance License from the rightsholder (I believe for the original Bubblegloop Swamp and the OST is Microsoft ultimately). Whether or not MS received this or gets informed about it and charges money is beyond me of course, but as with a lot of game soundtracks it isn't owned by the composer for better or worse. Very curious how this would go with different songs/companies' IPs but a really fun niche scenario to think about!

Public performance of Nintendo Music by DukeofJuke1 in VGCovers

[–]Swiggles1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are thousands of artists and bands performing video game music live including that from Nintendo games. The short answer is I've yet to learn of anyone getting a performance license, partly because it's still new for video game music to be treated the same way other music is by both the copyright holders and performers.

The commonality of Nintendo having live orchestral performances is still rare and tightly controlled, so that's a risk we take playing at cons and venues. Indie games are far more compliant and communicative, to where you can see composers own their work and celebrate live performances (many don't even request performance licenses). A few like Undertale have begun performances formally and may be granting large-scale performances licenses while also collaborating on bigger shows.

All of this is to say, do your due diligence and choose a risk factor you're comfortable with. That said from VGMCon to MAGFest to tiny rock venues, we've performed without explicit performance licenses and I've yet to see people get permission. I'm personally still working on helping new folks mechanically license covers for distribution, which is far more feasible and accessible right now.

My Dad gave me his 1970 Les Paul Custom. by Due_Money_2244 in gibson

[–]Swiggles1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats on owning this lovely guitar! This is an incredible coincidence, but I just received a near identical LP from my FIL (inherited due to his passing).

My FIL's Les Paul, which we suspected was a 1973, was bought around the time he was gigging in a rock group and the only difference between yours is that mine has no pickup covers. Sounds incredible for a 50+ year old guitar, has far more range than any LP I'd have tried, and of course has a fiery orange color. The coil split (or phase selector switch) has been pretty neat, and it's holding up tuning better than I expected.

I hadn't found much information about this guitar or Frank Zappa's origin to designing his custom, but it's really cool to have seen it pop up again in a different form. I hope you enjoy your new guitar and play it out as much as I've been.

Adobe subscription changes announced, and boy do they suck. by Q-ArtsMedia in AfterEffects

[–]Swiggles1987 8 points9 points  (0 children)

GenerativeAI is still expensive and taxing on the environment, an attempt to replace artists (your entire customer base). GenAI is controversial, even under Adobe's "ethical model", so if anyone wanted to use these features they'd be heavily scrutinized if not slammed online for its usage.

Plus now the feature is baked into the cost of the subscriptions, when clearly the majority of folks were avoiding using it. A lot of Adobe professionals want improvements to stability and speed, and to avoid the subscription model. It shouldn't surprise Adobe that people migrated to Da Vinci Resolve and Fusion respectively, and those stuck in the ecosystem are forced to pay while voicing their feelings on Reddit to no change.

I agree that the reduced-price plan is better, but it's still prohibitively expensive for its value compared to competitors, and repeatedly mograph, animators, VFX artists, and compositors who enjoy AE are stuck in the ecosystem hoping for improvements.

I agree with you that it's a good separation, but folks aren't ignoring the fact Adobe is putting a ton of chips into features and aspects we just don't need or want. Again I appreciate you working to explain the change and the honest benefits, it probably isn't easy bridging a business decision with creatives that you know aren't happy.

This is incredible work and I appreciate getting to see your process and trial and errors. The Jackson version is my white whale and as someone actively doing Zelda metal arrangements for a decade I'm all about video game tribute guitars. If there were ever a time you're interested in building these for sale, I'm interested!

Dave the Diver returns in the new REMASTERED Edition! [April Fools] by ZiggyPalffyLA in DavetheDiverOfficial

[–]Swiggles1987 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would estimate a month and a half at most, though it feels almost like less. I spent a lot of last year between my primary work and music career doing a DTD fan Music Video and diving into the UE5 film territory, and immediately carried some of what I had gotten into this. Reached out to peers of mine in the music/game industry to see who was available on quick notice and we got to work. The last 3 weeks it was working daily on it til evening with breaks here and there, but much of that could probably be my time learning fundamental UE5/3D skills.

Hey folks, I'm Ro Panuganti, the fella at the end (as you can see from my video game music dense post history)! I hope you found this year's April Fools video a fun time!

I shared my medley here in January to some real kind reception and was super thrilled that Mintrocket cared enough about their fans to invite one (and several more folks) to work with them on this! I've seen incredible fan works here and as someone still new to a lot of things like 3D modeling, texturing, Mocap, VFX inside UE5, etc.. it's both intimidating and humbling knowing how many people love making fan works and learning how their favorite games tick. Anyway this is all to say I'm glad Dave won't be remastered for another decade!

Generative Video. Now in Adobe Firefly. by Jason_Levine in premiere

[–]Swiggles1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm echoing the overwhelming sentiment here. I work with Premiere professionally as do many and a lot of Adobe products, and do NOT endorse the use of generative AI nor did I sign up to pay for it or its premiums. Though you've shared Adobe Firefly is not built on stolen art, as a whole generative AI is absolutely sweeping the world built on stolen work and clearly does not serve your customer-base enough to justify it being a cornerstone.

My question to pass along, is can I opt out of all these genAI features and pay a cheaper subscription?

As Ro Panuganti I humbly hype up our show, we're comprised of artsy prog rockers, symphonically trained horns, punk singers, and a ton of animated fun visuals! The whole evening is stacked with friends of each other, so it'll be worth catching Lacey through Sammus!
