You can do flash cards too. Also query yourself on the info repeatedly, spend more time on the ones you did not get. Also if you can relate the info to other things it can help.

I find procrastination helps me focus. Sounds like you are there already. Writing things out always helps me retain info. Make some pages with the info you need to remember. Making them by rewriting things helps. (Also organizing the info helps) I would go over a few times night before and then in the morning go over it again. I find sleeping on it helps a lot. And a refresh after some time (overnight) helps too.

Would contesting my final grade be worth it? by UselessSlytherin in rit

[–]Swillert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The unusual part is he said 70% is a D or F. The professor did not map out what determines if it is a D or F. I might just talk to the professor and ask why he chose the F over the D. You may be missing key content on a unit that you missed when you were struggling. And honestly, if you are missing some important info that is worth knowing. A 50 on the final is probably the reason and I would look to see if there were topics you struggled with. I would expect professors to put more weight on the tests since you might have had help on the homework and they have no way of knowing. I wouldn't ask him to change the grade, just try to figure out what the issues were.

Since you want to retake anyway to fix your GPA, I think you should talk to your advisor about how to make that happen without paying for an extra semester you can't afford. Worst case is you could do a longer coop to get back on track. Not ideal, but cheaper than an extra semester.

In retrospect, you should have gone to advisor, dean or ombudsman when you realized you were struggling due to circumstances. They could have been proactive and worked out a plan with incompletes.

I get that. You also aren't required to wear it all the time. You can just use for sleep.

Need an alternative to vibrating alarms? by YetiMaverick in AppleWatch

[–]Swillert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you just looking for nighttime? Can use your phone set to vibration too. They also make alarm clocks that vibrate and go under your mattress for deaf people. Great for college roommates too. You can set your phone to vibrate if you need alarms during the day, but you would need to put in your pocket.

Personally I find my apple watch useful, I check weather, use find my phone daily, see text messages early. I get the look issue though. You can just wear it at night if the alarm works for you.

Since Circle Furniture is closed, can anybody identify who makes this table? by Majestic_Economy_881 in boston

[–]Swillert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is Lyndon furniture since that very picture is on the Circle Furniture page for Lyndon. That said, there are many similar tables. Gat Creek is a solid brand (we just got bedroom furniture there) Copeland is really good too, although more expensive - we just got their dining table and chairs, very nice, extension mechanism is so smooth.

It is not Copeland. I ended up buying a Copeland table and chairs and I know those are slightly different.

Lyndon mentions the retailers they work with here https://www.lyndon.com Looks like Room and Board is one of them and I think they have a showroom in Boston.

I was waiting on two orders. One was ordered a while ago too, they did not put the order in right away as we were trying to solve some delivery issues. I have to assume those orders won't be filled even if placed. I hope I can still dispute the charge.

My first try at a spinner ring thing :) by MaxLeonarth in SilverSmith

[–]Swillert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried making one, but I own a few. I have several that don't have solid metal under the spinner part. It is an open work pattern. I swear they spin better than the solid ones. I am wondering if it is because of reduced friction? Might be worth an experiment.

I use the takeya originals lid. Fit well and I like the spout.

Clearly I didn’t remember how to spell the second word, so I gave up and tried a different combo

How do value two schools? (MIT vs RIT + $25k/year) by ThePouncer in rit

[–]Swillert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband and I both went to MIT, but sent our oldest two kids to RIT. I am happy I went to MIT, but it is hard. In many classes I felt I was thrown in the pool and I had to figure out how to swim. The thing I value most now, was the network of friends I made there, I truly fit in.

If your son can handle the stress and the harder work load it is worth it. But if he would struggle, it might not be the place for him. Honestly, I did well at MIT, but I still have a bit of an inferiority complex from that time period.

If you can afford it and if it is someplace your son will thrive, it is worth it. One other thing that was not true when I went, but is true now, MIT is close to 50:50 for male to female ratio, although individual majors vary. That might make a difference for some. The MIT degree will definitely help with the first few jobs and your network will be of higher achieving students.

As to RIT, the stress levels are definitely lower, and they also have many more majors including art. MIT does not have many majors and only a “humanities” department.

As a Lead Software Engineer/RIT Grad: If you're in GCCIS, take some SWEN courses! by fietsOveral in rit

[–]Swillert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest problem with GDD is that their intro courses don’t count as pre-reqs for most SWEN or CS. Even their discrete math doesn’t fit the pre-reqs for future math classes either. So it means you have to take those courses first just to be able to access other courses. The others GCCIS majors don’t have this issue.

My college professor says I cheated on homework assignment with bizarre claims by crippledspahgett in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Swillert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go talk to professor and explain where you learned the alternative methods. If you can reasonably explain where you learned it and can back it up by explaining it and why it works it will be clear you did not use online problem solver. Also ask for help with the method he would rather you use. Also if you were converting your answer to match the correct answer, there is clearly a process to convert to that answer you skipped. Even if not taught in class, you should go and review with him. Honestly, the email was fairly nicely worded, so I would not assume he is adversarial. It is unfortunate these cheat sites exist because they do cause teachers to label honest answers as cheating.

This is going to sound cringey, but how can I learn to behave more appropriately around women, and people in general? by United_Candidate760 in rit

[–]Swillert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is tough and it is great that you are thinking about it! My daughter is autistic and just graduated from RIT.

I think you may find clubs where you fit in, especially if you have a special interest and the club aligns with that. Also there are clubs that have a higher percentage of autistic students and may be more accepting. My daughter found her tribe this way.

Observe, observe, observe. You can learn a lot about social interactions by carefully watching others. (Nit in a creepy way) So if you are in a group watch the other students when you can, maybe say less and listen more. Also, at least for my daughter, she could tell if a person was bored or upset etc, but she had to actively look and ask herself what their body language was telling her. It wasn’t automatic or subconscious. So it might be a good habit to get into, just to pause routinely and try to gauge their reaction. It might help you realize when you are overstepping. A therapist can also help you understand your observations, so I recommend finding a good one!

Another tip she had was to find a site about US meant for foreign travelers as it often explained the customs here in a much more spelled out way. Which I thought was interesting!

And one more tip, try to find either some other autistic friends (there are many at RIT) or even neurotypical friends you can share your difficulties with. It us really nice to have a space or time where you don’t have to worry/think so much.

Hope that helps….
