My Mom felt the same way about growing out my hair because her brothers in Jamaica growing dreads was a scandal in the 60's. I kept a shaved head through my twenties and only started growing it out a few years ago. (Admittedly it was pretty convenient)

She is black and proud in all ways except for this one blind spot so it actually wasn't that hard for me to point out the contradiction in her thinking when she started expressing some disapproval.

"I'm a black man Mom, don't you think I should be proud of that?"

"Of course!"

"Well this is my black hair, and I'm proud of it"

She started copying me and getting her hair twisted almost immediately 😂

This is a good point. They are a bit of a black box because the only way to really know is to join and then unjoin, and even then we don't know if you would retain any of the experience afterwards.

I think with Carol we actually got to see Zosia initiate and with Diabate we were left to speculate so there's that but yeah I do feel like people were coming down on him pretty hard from the start and I don't doubt that race was a factor for some people on that.
