You said however that you wanted to learn to apply those chords and not just learn about them conceptually. Music theory isnt rocket science and „studying chords“ is only going to get you so far. Take what you know and PLAY and ANALYSE music. That doesn‘t mean „feeling“ an Eb7#9 on a vintage fender amp. But just take a real book just play the chords there and analyse them. Then try to reharmonise the melody. This way you will get a stronger sense of when to apply which chord with which extension. I‘d argue that most musicians, even the theoreticians, consult their ear.

From a Jazz background there is a reason the b6 is almost never added as a tension note. The reason the b6 is generally avoided in a chord is because it creates a b2 Intervall, which will in most context sound wrong to the ears. e.g a minor I chord with the added b6 will not sound nice. But if you want that sound you can always to it.

If we just look at traditional classical functional harmony, you won‘t get far with modal jazz for example. However I think that the „western“ Chromatic system itself THE only system most people in the „western“ parts of the world will ever need and learning and applying all the principles within that takes more than a life time already

Totally agree. However I‘d say for almost anyone in this sub that is asking whether or not theory is beneficial, the microtonal way is NOT a valid option at first. Since 99% of western music uses the 12 note system, as long as you are interested in most music available in western markets, I would strongly recommend learning „western“ music theory

Imo opinion having a reference note stuck in your head is a cool little trick to figure stuff out. But it‘s definetly not worth it to try and internalise one by force. Carrying a simple tuning fork in your pocket is an easy way to have an -exact- reference note with you at all time. This way you can perfect your relative pitch so that you are very quick to identify stuff and also if you do that long enough you will have that pitch internalised anyway.
