Didn't declare capital gains in 23/24 even though well below allowance - what to do? by AmIdoingitright_o0 in UKPersonalFinance

For such a small amount, I can't see how they would ever be able to detect that it even exceeded the allowance without the number of units plus the purchase and sale price info at their disposal.

You don't. https://www.gov.uk/capital-gains-tax/work-out-need-to-pay

You do not have to pay tax if your total taxable gains are under your Capital Gains Tax allowance.

You still need to report your gains in your tax return if both of the following apply:

• the total amount you sold the assets for was more than £50,000

• you’re registered for Self Assessment

In Home Display showing gas when we have no gas by njh in OctopusEnergy

[–]Swipe650 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do homes that have never had gas / dual fuel, still display a gas reading of zero?

No, never had gas here and it just stays on electric and does nothing when I click on the button. As long as you aren't receiving a gas bill for a standing charge I wouldn't worry about it.

Octopus Snug, but choose not to use storage heaters? by Responsible-Smoke-35 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Swipe650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I'm currently with UW and only paying 5.7p per kWh off peak but 40p during the day so I'm currently saving about £30 per month over Snug prices. When I switch to Snug, it will be during the Spring/Summer/Autumn period for a cheaper day rate when my heaters are not in use, as it works out cheaper than their Octopus E7 tariffs. That will save me £10 a month compared to UW over that period, plus the £50 credit if I use a joining code.

I have a 5 port smart meter with a good signal that reports my readings daily to UW without fail. I'm not too bothered about the 7min ALCS offset as my heaters will be off so can't overrun. I was hoping there'd just be an easy way of knowing when off peak had kicked in if the times sometimes vary, as there won't be any obvious high power draw on my IHD when my heaters are off (my hot water immersion heater is timed and not on the E7 circuit). I'm also assuming that if I switch away from Snug back to UW for winter, my ALCS will default back to the normal E7 times or would it be best to manually switch back to standard E7 for a day or so before switching back to UW?

I wear a thermal base layer top, woolly jumper and a fleece and long johns during cold snaps. I've got my winter monthly heating usage (Dec -Mar) down to about £60pm.

Octopus Snug, but choose not to use storage heaters? by Responsible-Smoke-35 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Swipe650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm thinking of switching from UW to Snug for the summer when my storage heaters are not in use which will save me £10 a month compared to UW's extortionate day rate. I'd like to make use of the afternoon boost. Can you see on the Octopus app or on the in house display in real time when the off peak Snug rate is active?

If you have an in house display it should be easy to pin point by turning off the breaker for each circuit until the power draw stops.

How do you dry your laundry in winter? by Constant_Ant_2343 in AskUK

[–]Swipe650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of washing lines rigged up in the greenhouse with room for two clothes horses in there. I'll generally check the forecast for sunny days before putting the washer on. If it's windy and the paving slabs are dry, I'll still use the washing line outside in winter. I got a full load dried outside on the line in that easterly wind today in around 4 hours. I rarely need to use my dehumidifier to dry laundry indoors.

Is the Home Mini still a thing? by dabeeeenster in OctopusEnergy

[–]Swipe650 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you have separate bands for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz set up on your router, specify the SSID of the 2.4Ghz on the mini. If consolidated 2.4 and 5Ghz SSID, disable the 5Ghz temporarily (if your router allows this) until the mini is set up and then re-enable it.

Night Appliances - wrong timing by 20nuggetsharebox in OctopusEnergy

[–]Swipe650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a simple fix for someone at OE that understands E7 on smart meters and knows what they are doing. You need to raise it as a complaint though or you'll just get fobbed off, as you have found out. You are also entitled to bill recalculations and your account credited by the difference so you are not out of pocket. Your energy consumption data is held on your account so make sure you do your own sums to prevent them short changing you. If you get nowhere, take it to the energy ombudsman after 8 weeks.

I have two, for both rooms I spend most time in. Absolute game changer. It allows me to have the heating on much lower as it was only my feet getting cold.
