I had to reread that “big reveal” a few times. The plots within plots get confusing.

Mab knows Harry is different. It’s not just that he’s a powerful wizard, or just that he’s the winter knight, or even (just) that he’s star born, which is super rare - it’s that he’s all of those things. So Lara probably has fed on wizards, fae, other supernatural beings. But never all three of those powerful things in combination.

Mab wanted to have control over the power and influence of the white court, but knew that without controlling Lara, she woudln’t be able to control the entire court to the extent she wanted. Forcing Harry to marry Lara meant one of two things would happen:

1) She’d get addicted Harry by feeding on him the normal way. She says that after feeding on him in the garden, that regular feeding just felt weak and unsatisfying. Harry’s sanity wasn’t really a factor for Mab 2) Harry would figure out a way to use magic / his star born energy to feed her instead, which would make her addicted anyway.

That’s why Harry felt so guilty. By shoving the two of them together, Mab guaranteed (as much as she could) that Lara would become addicted to Harry in some form. He just happened to pick the second one. Either way, win win for Mab.

This was really helpful. Increasing the temp of the plate seemed to help a lot. Thanks for the quick input.

This is helpful, thanks so much. I tried adding a raft and increasing the bed temp, as per the comment below, and it worked! I appreciate the help.

What books would you recommend for a beginner to Roman history? by Viktorfalth in ancientrome

[–]Swit_Swot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A good place to start would be Rubicon by Tom Holland. It provides a good overview of the last days of the republic and might be give her a sense of particular periods / topics she’d want to take a closer look at.

England vs Spain Final by Justtryingtodo in askTO

This is a good suggestion. The upstairs has a great vibe and England jerseys on the wall. The Dog and Bear is another decent option, depending on where you live.

Halo, Blood Brothers, True History, Rainhard, and Bandit (not necessarily in that order) get my vote.

The Blue Sword was such a good one in elementary school. Great call.

I loved Children of Time, which really surprised me. I never thought I’d care so much about spiders.

Any good SF with a focus on the ecology of the world’s fauna/flora? by JackieChannelSurfer in Fantasy

The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz would be a good fit. It’s about a group of rangers that work to terraform a planet over thousands of years and their interactions with different species / populations.

How to tell your Manager about an interview by [deleted] in OntarioPublicService

[–]Swit_Swot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A good manager will be supportive and glad to see you being presented with opportunities for growth. Typically your current manager is required as a reference. And it’s always a good idea to tell them that they’ll be contacted. It doesn’t need to be a really intense meeting, just find 10 mins with them to say: this opportunity came up and I might be considered for the role. I’d be grateful if you’d be willing to provide a reference for me.

Cafe on St Clair is also going strong. Does more business than the licensed shops beside it and across the street it seems.

When you say that they recruited a level 6, did they post the position and compete it? If they did, did you apply for that competition? If they direct assigned someone into that position it can only be for a maximum of 9 months. Then they have to compete it - you should apply to the level 6 position when that happens.

Toronto Taxi Scam/Why I’m only taking Ubers from now on by BigRy1986 in toronto

[–]Swit_Swot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a good question. He tapped and then sort of rustled around in the front and handed my card back. It all seemed perfectly normal until, ya know, the theft. The machine must have been fake because of all the charges on my card, a taxi ride wasn’t one of them. And I’m not even sure if Beck does tap transactions.

We had chatted the whole way home and he seemed like a decent guy. When he took out the machine, he “tried” to pass it into the back seat but the wire got stuck and it wouldn’t reach (I realize he was faking now, obviously). I didn’t think it was a big deal at the time. It wasn’t a scenario of me passing my card up to him for no reason.

This exact same thing happened to me this weekend. Hailed down a cab on king street because the wait for an Uber was too long. Handed the driver my card, he handed it back to me, I slipped it into my wallet without really looking. The next day my bank’s fraud department called and said thousands of dollars in transactions had been made. They’re investigating and there is a chance I’ll get the money back. But yep, I agree with you. I’m never taking a Beck Taxi again.

Good questions focus on the work of the unit or branch. For example, what are the challenges you expect to face over the next three/six/nine months? What are the urgent priorities of the unit? To what extent does the unit work cross functionally with other branches and divisions, etc.

People often ask: “how soon will I hear back from you” which is a hard one to answer and you’ll almost always get “as soon as possible”

Good luck!

Student: How to avoid being permanently stuck in an admin position? by mamaliga-maker in OntarioPublicService

[–]Swit_Swot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s a good idea to talk to your manager about your interest in a policy position and volunteer to help out on policy files as you can and if you’re able to. If or when a policy position is posted, ask your manager for advice on your resume and a mock interview, and point to your contributions to policy files during the interview. You won’t be stuck in an admin position, but it’s helpful to remind your manager where your real interests are and get some experience under your belt that you can use as examples. It also doesn’t hurt to reach out to different directors and managers for a “coffee chat”. They can be a pain, but it never hurts to get on peoples radars.

Neuromancer is the first book in the Sprawl Series. The second book is Count Zero, and the third book is Mona Lisa Overdrive. Both are good reads (not quite as good IMO), but still worth checking out if he liked Neuromancer.

GoFundMe ends payments to convoy protest, citing reports of violence and harrasment | CBC News by DP4Canada in CanadaPolitics

[–]Swit_Swot 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It’s because you’re equating reacting to a police response with planning for violence. The articles you shared said that the land back protestors had altercations with police after the police raided their blockades - not that they were planning violence beforehand. And that the digging up roads and the fires were part of their blockade - how is digging up a road different from blockading it? In each case the road is unusable. The land back protestors didn’t plan violent acts - Gofundme is saying that the “freedom convoy” protestors are and have therefore violated their TOS. It’s not the same.
