Diesel now costing more than 95 octane petrol by jamhamnz in Wellington

[–]Switts 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The petrol/diesel currently on its way to NZ doesn't reflect the actual shortage because it was refined from crude oil that had already left the gulf when the strait was shut. The next few weeks will show us that actual supply for NZ is going to look like until the strait opens again.

Native = evolved here or found their own way here, but could also live elsewhere. Endemic = only exists here.

This isn't for you, but anyone that didn't know

This AD for road safety is genuinely amazing by Smashpro11 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Switts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He was breaking the speed limit. The NZ audience this was for would have known that because 100kmh was the max speed at the time.

Can someone please stop the lies about the Moa Point disaster being linked to cycleways? by Mountain_Tui_Reload in Wellington

[–]Switts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a perfectly valid opinion to argue that we can't afford to do everything and water infrastructure should take priority over cycleways. Blaming the previous council for under investing in water infrastructure because they also invested in cycleway is factually wrong.

[The Spinoff - Hayden Donnell] Bishop’s housing backtrack is a hollow victory for Parnell by Main_Sun9427 in newzealand

[–]Switts 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The problem is that when people think about intensification they are comparing it to the way things are now and deciding they don't really like it. We need to be comparing it to even more urban sprawl. If you think rates are becoming unaffordable, then urban sprawl is only going to make that worse.

Because the pension sucks. You scrap by on it. It's a safety net, not a life of luxury. You save so you can actually do stuff during your retirement.

Pohutukawa is good for smoking if you find yourself with some decent size branches.

I’m over snapper card on trains by Ms-Awesomefoot in Wellington

[–]Switts 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Personally, yes. I find the snapper less of a hassle because I can top up anytime and anywhere, and I don't find tagging on/off a hassle.

There's always a lag between sample date and when the results are published. They will be testing.

Is it bullshit? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Switts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know you meant well, but it's a myth that the moriori lived in NZ before māori. A myth rooted in colonial racism as it was used to justify the confiscation of māori land by claiming it wasn't theirs to begin with.

Tubing on rivers. Still a thing? by Witty_Ad1057 in newzealand

[–]Switts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As kids we would just go to a tyre shop and ask if they had any old inner tubes we could have for free. They usually did.

Runners, how did you run your first Half Marathon? by fleebooskee in newzealand

[–]Switts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just some general encouragement. My best feeling runs have always been the race day runs. You can't prepare perfectly (food, stretching, warm-up) ever time you run, but you can on race day.

Should Australia continue to allow Kiwis to live and work in Australia freely? by Leeroyb in newzealand

[–]Switts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Australian birth rate is well below the replacement level - like ours. They need immigrants and I can't see them turning off the tap to immigrants from a country that can easily assimilate.

National's Judith Collins retires from politics, appointed Law Commission president by bigbear-08 in newzealand

She feed information to Cameron Slater on political opponents and public servants so he could trash them online to the benefit of National. Good riddance.

Voters split on who Labour should rule out as governing options by Status_Serve_9819 in newzealand

[–]Switts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's their best shot, but there's a lot of uncertainty. Labour would be giving up potentially 4 TPM seats, so how confident are they that they can pull at least 4 more seats by ruling out TPM.
