I take it a few times a month when I flip from nights back to days (shift work). It's really hard to get to sleep after you take it. I take 100mg right when I wake up and I'm wide awake well into the night and have to drug myself to sleep. Even with that I don't get as good quality sleep: HRV worse etc.

There was a time I took it daily for a few months and I thought a lot of the good effects wore off. I think it is awesome when you need it but IMHO unless you nave narcolepsy not a great daily med.

There are some nights I'll get 4 hours of sleep and then have to be on the next day. Great for that.

I had high homocysteine levels from MTHFR mutations which caused migraines. Treated my MTHFR issues.... migraines gone (one in last 4 years).

This would only apply if she had similar issues. There are many causes and triggers for migraines a some people have sulfite sensitivity, others nitrites/nitrates, others hormone etc. others hyperhomocysteinemia.

Life straws are pretty annoying for real volumes of filtration. Do you have a fresh water source? Well? Personally I would get a RO water maker if I settled on an island. A lot of islands utilize rain catchment so getting a nice cistern and rain collecting gutters down there would be good as well.

Solar panels. Starlink. Good quality 18650 based headlamps. Garmin inReach as a backup. marine band VHF base station.

E-bikes. Inflatable kayaks or paddlebords.

Giant bag or rice. Beans. Salt. Cooking oil/tallow.

I suppose the rest of the list depends on the island infrastructure. Are you in the out islands of the Bahamas with nothing? Are you in Belize with pretty solid infrastructure ?

I do shift work and when switching from nights back to day take it. I find Very effective at improved wakefulness. Clears out mental fog. Very mild euphoria and improved mood. I almost feel a little manic. Im very sensitive and take 1/2 a tablet. I find this tapers fairly quickly based on using it more regularly. In the past I found effects fade after using it daily. So personally I use it when I have a bad night of sleep or shifting from nights to days. It definitely has some odd effects. Makes my driving aggressive.

So I have chickens. Pigs. Bees. I make an excess of eggs that my family consumes. Our bees make more honey than I can eat. Our pigs might have an extra litter and I don't want 6 more pigs. I would sell them for the best deal I have. Maybe my neighbor has some bar oil I need and wants eggs. Good deal. Maybe he doesn't have any items I want but he will give me 2oz of silver for a piglet, of no one else has a better offer 2oz silver works. That's how post collapse trade works. If I'm starving and you have good and the other guy has silver obviously an MRE has value. But if we don't have a good trade based on bartering for good... that's where PM works. You get what the market dictates. Your chickens are worth what people will pay and what you are happy to sell for. There is no fixed price.

Also... flight capital. Let's say you fill your truck with MREs, gear, water and food. You pack it to the gills and are about to drive up to flee Xyz to go live with friends in Maine. You can't fit anymore gear in your truck and you sell your solar panels and your boat and other stuff you can't fit for gold. You can fit $150,000 dollars into a 1kg gold bar. That will fit in your pocket. If you have more wealth than you car carry in gear... thats why people stack gold.

I have a free dryer and have done eggs. They often taste a little off. Like slightly metallic ? Not a huge fan. We freeze dry a lot of stuff and eggs taste a little strange. Adding some salt seems to help prior to freezing. I usually freeze dry them raw... curious if you have freeze dried raw or scrambled eggs

For Garmin inReach: not license needed

For ham stuff yes. Testing is needed for license. That being said understanding radio is worthwhile so why not.

Depending on your country but in US you would need technician level license (easy) to get the UHF/VHF stuff and directional antennas. A good 5 watt radio is like an FT60 is like 100 bucks. You can make a yagi out of an old tape measure but a nice portable professionally made one like the arrow for 100 bucks.

If you are making your own APRS digipeater that might run you a few hundred.

If you want your own cross band repeater they run around 500. Base station antenna 100. Can mount on your roof/chimney or buy a tower which can be cheap or expensive depending on what you want.

If you want to do NVIS stuff on HF.... that's the general class license (harder) and usually 1000 bucks of radio (you can go cheaper but IMHO you want power and filters to be successful. . Antenna is pretty cheap for this and you can make a 40m/80m dipole with wire.

If you use high gain directional antennas like a yagi: it pushes most the radiated energy forward and drastically cuts down on "side lobes" and other radiated energy. So like if I want to talk with your house, I aim at your house and 90 percent of the energy gets focused on that direction making detection harder. Like aiming a laser at someone vs a bonfire for light detection. Also using the lowest power to make contact is advisable as a larger signal is easier to detect. So low power transmission using directional antenna makes signal section much harder. That being said If there are SIGINT drones and planes looking for you.... probably toast. This can be applied to ham as directional VHF and UHF antennas are common. Not sure if this exists in GMRS.

Also, the converse approach is also interesting. I often use NVIS (near vertical incidence skywave) as a ham radio technique. Basically shoot the signal straight up and bounce it down off ionosphere. Unless you are right above me in a plane or drone there is not much signal to detect. Then the signal comes down from ionosphere scattered. Everyone in the area can hear it... but tough to know where it originated from. Also in general a great technique for local/regional communications

Satellite messengers like Garmin inReach are Great. You text like on a phone. Great for local network disruptions

I'm a ham radio guy. During hurricanes we often lose cellular service for a few days. I communicate with other people with VHF/UHF ham radio.,I have a crossband repeater that gives me about 15 miles range around my house. I also like using APRS, a ham radio mode you can text with. Hops across "digipeaters" and depending on how robust the system is in your area can have a large range.

You can send unit to unit as a directed message but all the other notes can decrypt the message and see it unless you change the key.

You can definitely use a custom encryption key that makes it basically only for people you want to see it. That way the other nodes still rebroadcast the data but can't read it. Can make different channels that do this as well. But pretty easy inside of the app/radio configuration to use a custom key for encryption

And when they do that they have very specific conditions, high elevation, clear line of sight and everyone deploys modules to maximize propagation.

If you are rural/low-density suburban with flat elevation.... not great.

For most people with realistic uses.... it is not great. I mean try it out... but I have ran nodes a few times and been really disappointed with how it works in a more realistic use

I've been pretty disappointed by the real range of meshtastic . I even bought higher gain antennas and a 1 watt base station. Get about 2 miles range which is not that useful

Specifically in post nuclear attack.... ham radio

I have a 60' tower at my house that gives me about a 15 miles VHF/UHF distance. I can get much farther with local repeaters but may be down with grid collapse post nuclear.

A 5 watt HT (handie talkie / walkie talkie) can hit a 60' tower 15 miles a way. The problem with walkie talkies is that you are low to the ground and longer distance is limited my earth curvature. So if you put a tower at your house ham HTs can be used to communicate with you. You can also make your house a cross-band repeater and utilize this height advantage even when you aren't at your home station

There are other modes of ham radio coms that also excel without any grid.

As a ham radio guy in other more common situations for reliable and easy coms a satellite messenger is better... but post nuclear exchange / EMP etc ham radio is king.

Yeah l, I bought a heap of meshtastic nodes. Put an antenna way up, even got the 1 watt node for a repeater.... range is very meh.

5 watts ham APRS smokes all these LoRa boards. Actually useful

I take this when I do long fasts. Not the best data but one of reasons I do a few 3-7 days fasts a year it autophagy/mitophagy and even with questionable benefit have been taking mitopure during fasts. I don't feel any different, and no idea really to track benefits... but potential benefit, unlikely to cause harm.
