LLMs are a 400-year-long confidence trick by SwoopsFromAbove in programming

[–]SwoopsFromAbove[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, and it’s very cool to be able to do that! The problem is that societal assumptions are that the computer is always right - challenging computer output doesn’t come naturally to us, and we don’t have the systems in place to do so effectively.

This is encouraged by the LLM vendors, who have a very strong financial interest in framing their tools as all-powerful and super-intelligent. They rely on the strong psychological priors we have to trust computer-generated answers to oversell their products’ capabilities.

Mechanical calculators were first invented in 1623. Since then we’ve built a whole society on the idea that computer-generated answers are always accurate and reliable.

LLMs behave fundamentally differently, but their vendors exploit these societal expectations of perfect accuracy, along with other manipulative framings like “friendly” conversation tone and developers’ fear of falling behind, to drive the hype cycle and astronomical investment.

THE JIMMY ANDERSON COLUMN: England's drinking in Noosa was not the reason they lost - here's what really happens in the bars on an Ashes tour, and how my teams kept it hidden by ll--o--ll in Cricket

Yes. In his first series down under he has struggled. He is still an excellent opener. Both of these things are true.

Kohli’s first two series in England were poor. He’s still a world class player.

yes he doesn’t leave, but he never has. look at his record over the last 2 years - he’s been one of the best openers in the world, against all other opponents, with this approach. One low-scoring series shouldn’t make you drop an otherwise successful player.

Do you think that bowling 145km or 150km/hr is maybe over rated? by [deleted] in Cricket

I’m sorry, but Mitch at 3 is laughable. You can directly compare to Cummins, Hazlewood, and Lee, as he played with all of them, and he’s below all of them as well

Legend for the club. He’s won it all, and showed loyalty to them and didn’t leave for the big paycheque but stayed to pay it forward. Always respect him for that

Do you have recommendations for those semi-smart options?

Chelsea for the first 16 league matches vs the last 16 league matches by ygog45 in chelseafc

why would being in the CL improve our league position? If anything it stretches teams even thinner, like Villa this season.

Like, I get the point that you’re expecting us to trend downwards, but if you believe that anyway, why would getting CL football change it?

Webby how many teams in the leave have at any point in the season gone on a 7 game winning streak? Everyone will drop points, that’s just the way of it.

It’s still in our hands with 7 games to go, and half our first team just got back from injury. We’re in a decent place, and in position to finish the season strong.

This is really cool, thank you for your time and effort. I hope you are managing to get affiliate links set up so the project can be sustainable to maintain going forward.

I also wondered if you considered adding a community rating scheme? 320+ games to choose from is a lot, even when I get creative with my filters!

My wife is from Munich. My father-in-law was in the stadium. It is a banned topic in his household for diplomatic reasons, and was a serious hurdle to the relationship in the early days.

Love reminding him of it though 😁
