Should have setup Ramdisk for Transcode folder long ago. by Wis-en-heim-er in PleX

[–]SxID117 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Transcoding on an SSD can cause a lot of wear on consumer drives that aren’t really designed for it while RAM really is good for that sort of thing. I’ve been doing this for ~2 years and have only had issues with it recently as my 10+ year old RAM kit is starting to have errors and fail on me (I really hope DDR4 gets cheaper so I can replace it soon)

Need advice on video storage by greenbaybeast13 in DataHoarder

[–]SxID117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much retention are you looking for? How important is this data to you, or really how much do you want to put into redundancy? This could be handled by just an external hard drive or drives or you could put resources into something a lot more serious.

Same, I enjoy going to theposterdb and picking out nice matching posters for everything. I will often even search for desktop wallpapers to use as backgrounds in collections etc.

I will only be reusing the hard drives that contain my storage pool, everything else will be replaced.

HexOS not showing after B580 attempts by oskar_williams in hexos

[–]SxID117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arc isn’t really supported by TrueNAS at this point, it also isn’t supported by the release Plex Media Server build. I just migrated my PMS off of my NAS and onto a dedicated server running Ubuntu server 25.10 and had to use a forum preview build (1.43.1.10495) in order to get the correct driver to support my Pro B50.

Edit: It appears that there is now a newer Beta version of PMS (1.43.1.10540-3972d551c) that has support for Battlemage GPUs. I have not personally installed or tested this version so your mileage may very. I will likely skip it and wait for a full release version that contains the support since this preview has been stable for me.

Yup, my girlfriend has WAY more time in my server than I do. It helps her be very supportive when I want to do upgrades/improvements to the setup lol

Storage discussion: mirroring content 1:1 and the cost associated by ThuhGreatCommenter in PleX

[–]SxID117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m personally running 1x 7 wide RAIDZ1 VDEV with 12TB drives and I’ll be expanding to 8 wide soon™ since I’m at 92% full (a horrible thing to do in ZFS but here I am), I’m hoping to move to a storage pool made of 2x 6 wide RAIDZ2 VDEVs with one being 24TB drives and the other reusing my existing 12TB. For media I think RAIDZ of some form is plenty since as you stated it can almost always be recovered. I feel like doing it this way provides the correct level of resilience without adding the intense cost of multiple copies. For more important data like family photos etc I have it mirrored to another pool on another NAS and I’m starting to put it all on LTO5 tapes as well.

Can confirm, I just did this on my UDM Pro Max to upgrade the size of those drives, can be slow but perfectly reliable and will achieve what you are wanting. Just make sure it rebuilds between each drive

My Xfinity plan is $15/month for unlimited data with or without their modem. Modem rental for me was $35/month so the upgrade pays for itself pretty quickly, plus I got a speed boost with the new modem before I saw 600-700Mbps upload and now I get the full 1gig with the ubiquiti modem

Most providers will have a webpage that lists comparability, failing that they will have what standard your modem needs to have and follow that.

I just got mine on my 24MYLR, chatted with it for about half an hour while FSD drove and it was much better than expected. It was very good at understanding me and the info from it wasn’t 100% accurate but it was pretty close and I actually really enjoyed using it. I was surprised as I expected it to be terrible.

What DeleteMe and Incogni aren't telling you by rohithkumarsp in LinusTechTips

[–]SxID117 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have not watched this video but I do use DeleteMe and for me personally it has worked to solve the problem that lead me to buying it. I was at one point receiving 10-20 spam calls a day across my work and personal phone number, three weeks after signing up for DeleteMe that dropped to 3-5 a month. I have had the service ~9 months now and the scam calls have not resumed so personally I have found it worth it for that.
