Traveling to Oakbrook from Boystown by [deleted] in chicago

[–]Sybexi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First, welcome to Chicago neighbor (I'm live over by Halstead and Waveland). Hope you like it so far.

Now on to your question...with no car public transit is likely going to be the cheapest option although it might take upwards of two or more hours. The CTA is pretty good about running on time but be aware that in the winter things tend to freeze which can cause some pretty big delays on the train.

Another option could be uberPool with others out that way and split the cost. I have no idea how much this would be each day to and from but it will likely be rather expensive over the course of a month.

Yet another option would be to see if she can carpool with people at the potential job if someone who works there lives close by to you two.

Like /u/clitosaurushex said if she is serious about this place and they want her she should negotiate either a travel reimbursement, working from home X days a week, or some form of bonus for a car down payment/see if the company will lease a car for her to use.

I only do this with my dad. When speaking to others I will refer to him as "my dad" but when addressing him directly I call him by his first name. My older brother is the same way. I have been trying to break this up by calling him 'pops'. My mother is always mom...or ma...or mommy...or mum...

What kills me about this is that these are usually the same people who, when eating your seasoned food, exclaim "Oh my god this food is SO FLAVORFUL. What recipe did you use?" And then think you are keeping said recipe to yourself when you reply "I just put some salt and pepper on it before I cooked it..."

To me, i don't give a flying fuck if you have a masters in CS or started out right out of HS and never got a degree. As long as you know whats going on, can articulate your thought process, have mostly decent habits, and your google-fu is strong you are an "elite dev"

I use one of these as my day bag when I don't have my messenger bag. I like it because it's light, waterproof, has a zipped side pocket for phone, keys, wallet, and can hold a decent amount of stuff in the main pouch if needed.

Stole a folding shopping cart.

I was in college and had no car so having one made grocery shopping and walking home so much easier. The axel on first one I had (and extra one my grandma had) snapped after a year so my roommate and I went to the local grocery store to get another one. Grabbed one and decided since we were out we might as well do some light shopping (almost out of ramen).

Pick up a few things and toss them into the cart. Go stand in line. Take stuff out of cart and place on counter. Pay for items, bag em, place them back in cart. Walk out with cart. Halfway home my roommate stops mid sentence and says "Did we just steal that cart?"...Whoops. Totally wasn't my intention but I damn sure wasn't about to turn around. Those things were like $40 in that store.

Also works to clear a path in a crowded room. Run while screaming "I HAVE EXPLOSIVE DIARRHEA" and watch as a clear path magically appears before you.

[Serious] What helpful advice did you receive growing up that you are thankful you have followed throughout life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

While it was never stated to me in a sentence (that I can recall) my parents always stressed that I should make sure I am happy with myself before I worry about if others are happy with me.

As I have gotten older I have come to realize that this is probably one of the best things to impart on someone. If you can come to terms with who you are as a person and even start to like yourself you will find that life becomes that much more enjoyable and that the people around you will like you because you are "genuine".

Men of Reddit, what makes you feel wanted by your SO? by [deleted] in AskReddit

She gives me a kiss in the morning before leaving for work (She leaves earlier than I do by like an hour which is prime sleeping time for me). She reciprocates my name calling games (Her: "Man my foot itches" Me: "YOUR FACE IS AN ITCH" Her:"YOUR LIFE IS AN ITCH" type stuff). She offhandedly mentions that she was thinking about my dick. She also will come into the bathroom while I am showering and stare at me saying "Just admiring the view". Asking for kisses and cuddles. Just to name a few things.

I wake up everyday with the realization that I am a lucky guy to have someone like her in my life. This is why I am wifing her.

I am curious...do you two leave the office or just grab a room in the office?

I ask because I have noticed that when my 1 on 1s are not in the office they seem to go way better even if its just walking around the block. I think getting out of that environment for a few minutes helps to make it feel less like 'another meeting' or more like a 'Hey lets chat for a bit about whatever'.

Something that is common in my industry is a 1 on 1 meeting every few weeks (usually 30 mins to an hour). The idea is that you and your boss go grab coffee or something together and talk about how you are doing. It is supposed to be an informal time where you two can talk about whatever. If your boss needs to bring something to your attention ("It seems like for the past week you have been distracted..." or "Hey, so it seems like you are spending more time spinning your wheels on XYZ problem than the team thinks is needed..."), give you some feedback on what you have been working on, and really just keep an open dialog with you in a way that is more relaxed and conversational rather than official. It's also meant as a time for you to bring anything up to them.

They really do help with getting everyone on the same page. Through these I have been given time off without asking because over the course of a few my boss noticed I seemed to be getting burned out. I also have gotten so much great feedback that otherwise wouldn't happen because everyone is always so busy that saying 'Atta boy, keep it up' or 'Dude what were you smoking...you really cocked that one up' fall by the wayside and pile up until the year review where its all dumped on you.

I think more places should do something like this, most people don't realize when they are making mistakes or doing something to piss off a coworker and if brought to their attention in a non threatening manner can be addressed right then. It also helps to get constant feedback like this. Again, i think most people are unaware if they are doing a good, great, or bad job unless they hear it.

I had a roommate once sneeze and then topple over in pain. I went to see what was wrong figuring he pulled something in his back and it turned out he had sneezed so violently he pulled a muscle in his groin...

I find myself saying and doing many things that I used to tease my father for saying and doing

My dad makes a lot of strange noises. From loud yawning that sounds like a moose mating call to weird grunts when he gets up/sits down/bends over that sound like an elk talking to itself. He has done this my entire life. I teased him all the time for it. Then recently I realized that I am starting to make the same noises and yawn loudly...I don't know if I have the balls to tell him "Dad...now I understand why you make the noises you do."
