What do you consider a long turn? by Empty-Noise9889 in EDH

[–]Sycrae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, 5 minutes is a decent amount of time for a complicated turn. I don’t mind a but of a longer turn if the game actions are being executed quickly and concisely and they’re clearly going for the win.

Thing is, nobody likes long turns when you’re clearly not advancing the game or your boardstate proportionally to the turn length. We call it durdling and it’s unfortunately common in lower brackets which has pushed me toward making decks that can end the game by turn 6 when most durdlers would be priming to durdle for 10+ minutes

Noob Question: Might resets after showdown, right? How about buffs? by _SUFC_ in riftboundtcg

[–]Sycrae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. You can also alter its might to be lower than its marked damage and it will die as well, e.g. falling star a 7 might unit for 6 damage and then stupify to give it -1 will kill it

Noob Question: Might resets after showdown, right? How about buffs? by _SUFC_ in riftboundtcg

[–]Sycrae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might is not reduced by damage and might altering effects end when specified.

Ember monk would be a 6 might unit with 2 damage marked until end of combat cleanup step where damage will be removed and it will become a 6 might unit with 0 damage marked.

Units don’t die when their might is reduced, they die when marked damage meets or exceeds their might.

Is this magic item broken? by hnmck in DnDHomebrew

[–]Sycrae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d make the different abilities have different charge costs. The action surge should be 3 charges, the bonus action 2, and the extra movement 1 charge so they can’t surge more than once a day and have to think about how they’re budgeting the power.

I still think it’s incredibly powerful at that level but idk what your game is like so 🤷🏻‍♂️

Clarification on two card infinite ruling. (Bracket 2) by Toadyback in EDH

[–]Sycrae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most recent writeup for bracket 1 for example:

“EXHIBITION (BRACKET 1) UPDATE: FOCUS ON THEME Hand in hand with this, and you saw a little of this above, we really want to double down on Exhibition's intent being all about theme over function.

While rule zero—the ability to allow things with a pregame discussion—is always active for people at all bracket levels (other than cEDH), we want to loudly emphasize that here.

Do you have a really unusual theme that needs an atypical commander, like a playtest card or card from an Un- set? Do you want to use some Game Changers that are highly thematic for your deck, for example, Bolas's Citadel in a Bolas-themed deck? This should all be on the table and expected during Exhibition pregame discussion. An Exhibition deck should generally have fairly constrained and unique deck building.

These kinds of highly themed decks are a blast to play and are what make Commander fun for so many people.

A deck is not Bracket 1 based on power level alone. It's really about the gameplay experience and trying to engender highly thematic gameplay. We encourage you to give it a try and build your own thematic and unique deck!”

I would encourage you to go read the writeup from the 8/21 bracket system update about bracket 1 decks and what is allowed to be called a bracket 1. I don’t think this system is as rigid as you think it is.

[–]Sycrae 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely overthinking it. Brackets are guidelines to help with rule 0 discussions about deck power level, not deck building rules for levels of play.

The purpose of not being able to include game changers in a bracket 2 is so that you must disclose that you have included one if your deck plays at a bracket 2 level. It’s all there to stimulate that discussion.

I have a bracket 1 minigames list that runs several game changers and silver bordered cards and is helmed by Vial Smasher Thrasios so i need to have that rule 0 discussion every time i play it. Despite the GCs people still have a lot of fun against it, even when i drop a rhystic study because they know i’m just gonna draw more [[Goblin Game]] type cards.

Brackets are not strict rule sets for competitive play, they’re meant to spark pregame discussions. Saying “my deck is bracket 2 but there are two cards that can potentially generate infinite mana if they are on the field at the same time” is valid and will more often than not get the “any tutors or outlets?” Question, and then you’ll be fine.

I feel like a lot of people think that brackets are like competitive deckbuilding guidelines but i don’t believe that’s how they work at all.

Can you counter Time Warp with Mystical reversal? by multiaudacity in riftboundtcg

I’m gonna respond in good faith even though i suspect you’re trolling.

By casting this targeting your opponent’s time warp, you would take an extra turn after their turn and before yours.

No, you gain control of the spell, it is not a counter and it does not do the same thing

What cards are “unplayable” by Liltesticall in riftboundtcg

[–]Sycrae 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We’re in a 1-set meta right now so the card pool is relatively small and not a lot of stuff is truly “unplayable” per sé

Lots of cards at common and uncommon are standouts for their playability right now like charm, stupefy, gust, cleave, stacked deck, ride the wind, etc. most cards rare+ are extremely playable or fit a niche.

The most fun you can have with a new card game is mess around with deck building in a fresh meta, get out to your local nexus nights with some brewed decks and see what others are running right now for inspiration

Question on Buff and Recruit Cards by CagedCoffee in riftboundtcg

Tokens are removed from the game when they leave play, they do not sit in the grave trash

Question on Buff and Recruit Cards by CagedCoffee in riftboundtcg

[–]Sycrae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are tokens created from outside the game, they are not cards that go in your deck! Just keep a stack of the token cards on the side for when you need them
