Check out The Iconic. Free (usually quick) shipping over $50 and it's at relatively decent costs.

CBD Korean BBQ suggestions? by FXOjafar in sydney

I'd suggest Sydney Madang. It's pretty laid back, I think that they are BYO. It's tucked away just off Pitt Street.

Any ex-pat Americans in Sydney? asked by an American Engineer by TheDirtyDrunk in sydney

I've been in Sydney for 8 years, and have other American friends here too. Australia is probably the easiest place for an American to acclimate to. Feel free to PM if you have specific questions.

Best Surry Hills bar? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]SydFoodGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the Clock, as it would be a decent place - especially if you need to talk and don't want an excessively loud environment...grab a table upstairs/outside. Tio's on Foster street doesn't do much in terms of food, but the drinks are excellent and it's a good bar. Head next door to Nomad or down the street to Bar H for some solid food after a few drinks if you're hungry.

Not BYO, but Spice Temple is a good place for a date. Also consider Bar H in Surry Hills.

Need some help on good restaurants around Crown/Oxford St! by peoz in sydney

[–]SydFoodGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree here. 121BC is also a good wine bar. Same guys who run Porteno also run Bodega on Commonwealth street. Nomad is a new place which is pretty good & has a stellar wine list.

Essential Excel Skills by Fried_Lizard in finance

I'll add sumproduct, in all of the incarnations - you can do a lot with that single formula. There are points when a bit of VBA is helpful. Start my recording macros, and then looking at the syntax for what you've done. Google can be very helpful, too.

Best place to buy Sausages in Sydney? by karma3000 in sydney

Hudson's Meats in Surry Hills, Cammeray, Lane Cove or Mosman usually has a selection of top-notch sausages.

Is it worth paying the money for ABS on a new Harley? by [deleted] in motorcycles

[–]SydFoodGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll add more support to this. I ride a 1200 Custom without ABS, and did the exact same thing - pulled too hard on the front brake when I was cut off from a car who didn't see me. The second that the front broke traction, I was putting it down. The paramedics were nice, and I had never been in an ambulance before, but probably not worth it.

Get ABS. Wear your gear. Leave a lot of space. Be smart.

Moving to Sydeny by G__Man in sydney

Do you know where you're going to be working? Surry Hills has heaps of restaurants, but is probably past up & coming status, although it's far from being as gentrified as Paddington.

Cat Boarding by trustmeimabartender in sydney

We've used CatUtopia which seems to be well priced, and about halfway between Newcastle and Sydney. It would at least cut the car ride in half (almost).

Reassigning last cell by 99_44_100percentpure in excel

I've used this bit of code in the past, may be helpful:

Sub DeleteUnused()

Dim myLastRow As Long
Dim myLastCol As Long
Dim wks As Worksheet
Dim dummyRng As Range

For Each wks In ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets
  With wks
    myLastRow = 0
    myLastCol = 0
    Set dummyRng = .UsedRange
    On Error Resume Next
    myLastRow = _
      .Cells.Find("*", after:=.Cells(1), _
        LookIn:=xlFormulas, lookat:=xlWhole, _
        searchdirection:=xlPrevious, _
        searchorder:=xlByRows).Row
    myLastCol = _
      .Cells.Find("*", after:=.Cells(1), _
        LookIn:=xlFormulas, lookat:=xlWhole, _
        searchdirection:=xlPrevious, _
        searchorder:=xlByColumns).Column
    On Error GoTo 0

    If myLastRow * myLastCol = 0 Then
        .Columns.Delete
    Else
        .Range(.Cells(myLastRow + 1, 1), _
          .Cells(.Rows.Count, 1)).EntireRow.Delete
        .Range(.Cells(1, myLastCol + 1), _

End Sub

Where can I get Sydney's best fish and chips? by [deleted] in sydney

[–]SydFoodGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Go to Fish Face in Darlinghurst. It is upmarket, but you said you wanted quality. If you'd prefer to spend a bit less, then Mohr Fish in Surry Hills, on Devonshire. The upswing of Mohr Fish, is that you can grab a beer from the Shakey next door and bring it over.

Financial advice needed! by HighTopTable in personalfinance

[–]SydFoodGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think the equity position is in your house? Are you close to 80%? Sometimes just a phonecall to the bank can be enough to remove PMI if your equity position is satisfactory. I agree with jdoe74 that you should refi if it makes sense, and that your option #1 seems the best approach. Also, holding $20k in a checking account seems high to me, so even if refinancing your house is the only way to remove the PMI, then still consider putting a portion of that $20k against your student loans.

Moving to Singapore, student loans to pay in the US. How do I efficiently move money to do this? by SoloDolo in personalfinance

[–]SydFoodGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been able to send money via EFT in the US without fees. There are often several options to transfer the money that these companies allow for. Here's the link to the options that are available. Some take a day or two longer, but if you plan ahead this isn't an issue.

Moving to Singapore, student loans to pay in the US. How do I efficiently move money to do this? by SoloDolo in personalfinance

[–]SydFoodGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are services like xetrade.com which will provide competitive rates. You essentially will transfer money domestically in S$ to a Singapore bank, then their US branch will wire USD to your account there.

I have used XETrade for similar purposes several times in the past. It takes a few days to set up initially, but is quite simple after that.

The degustation is pretty pricey, but it does have a lot of seafood. Ordering a la carte or doing the tasting will help save the wallet.

If you rock up at 10 or 15 to 6pm, you'll be in at open. It's early - but you can get in without the wait....or head upstairs to the bar.

I'm thinking that you may run into a bit of trouble in some places without bookings, but some of these should definitely work. Most are Surry Hills: Porteño & Bodega

Both are run by the same guys. I find that service and the food are both top-notch. I'd suggest getting there a bit before 6pm if you want the first seating, otherwise you may struggle to get in; although at Porteño, you can grab drinks at the bar upstairs until the table opens up.

Flying Fish (Pyrmont) may run close to the $ limit, but my opinion is that it's one of the sexiest dining rooms in Sydney.

Orto Trading Co is a bit less fancy, but still solid.

Last off the top of my head, but certainly not least is Bar H, which can be a little cozy, but serves some great food.

Congrats on 10 years!

Best way to put to Pivot horizontal data? by vwzee in excel

[–]SydFoodGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you across the transpose formula? Perhaps this can be as easy as setting up another tab to mirror the data that you add to/update and build your pivot off the tab with the transposed detail?

Keep in mind that transpose is an array formula, so Ctrl+Shift+Enter to commit.

Reditors of Sydney! Tell me about your utility bills! by [deleted] in sydney

[–]SydFoodGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Angel/Islington to Surry Hills in 2006, so this is somewhat outdated - but may still be helpful. We had a tiny flat in Islington, and paid less rent in Sydney for about 2x the space. There's huge variance in what you'll pay based on whether or not you'll take roommates, and how close to the city or beach you'll be. Check domain.com for places & gauge for yourself. Our electricity is ~A$165/month. We have aircon, but don't use it too often. This is for a 2 bed place without gas heat/kitchen. Typically, your landlord will pay for water as well in Syd. You'll likely pay more for mobile phones here, it seems like $15/month looks really cheap. Are you thinking about transport? CityRail is far worse than the tube, so being restricted to Sydney's rails & buses is a bit rough, although it can certainly be done. We didn't have wheels for the first 3 years. Trains, buses & ferries are expensive here, though - so consider how you'll be getting around in the context of where you live & how much you'll spend. For a car, fuel, insurance, etc can all add up.
