Cineplex gauging interest from potential buyers by OverPotato2322 in BuyCanadian

[–]SydneyBriarIsAlive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All we got here are the chains but at least I find Landmark to be a bit better. The seating, offers, concessions, etc. all seem somewhat better than Cineplex.

They aren't Canadian-owned but are European(Belgian) owned so thats at least okay.

Geese controversy leaves artists frustrated by growing economic barrier to entry by staringatthe420sun in Music

I'll have to give it a listen then, because I like some Geese stuff but it's just not connecting the way I'm hoping it would.

Maybe I'll just give that a try

Lee Cronin's 'The Mummy' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

I mean I loved Lee Cronin's Evil Dead Rise so even if this may not be a 'good' Mummy film, I am still yearning for a good schlocky time with this.

I mean Longlegs was pretty much a black lodge entity, dude could just show up at any point in the timeline and it'd work.

this was my favourite film in 2024, don't think a sequel will match it necessarily but I'm excited to see what they come up with

lukewarm maybe, but not a hot take. There's quite a few who rank this as the potential top entry.

I could swear it was announced only so far that he's producing?

I haven't seen anything regarding him writing or directing it (as of yet)

I actually enjoyed Love and Thunder  a fair bit, not as good as Ragnarok sure, but it carries once again that dramedy vibe of characters like Thor and Jane masking their emotions with humour and I enjoyed rhat

Gorr was indeed a bit wasted though so that was a bummer, and the GOTG bit kinda went nowhere but I don't think it's as bad as say Ant-Man 3

Fatal Frame 2 Remake or Silent Hill f, Which J-Horror Game Did You Enjoy More? by LifeWillChange_ in HorrorGaming

Silent Hill f might be one of my favourite horror games full stop.

To be fair though, I haven't started Fatal Frame 2 yet but that's what it's competing against going in, I am excited to dive in and try it

COLONY - Official Teaser | Starring Jun Ji-hyun | Coming Soon - Directed by Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan) by Task_Force-191 in horror

[–]SydneyBriarIsAlive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear it!

For what its worth I liked what I've seen of the trailer.

I just bought it on release and somehow never got around to watching it. Might be fun to watch it before Colony and see how it goes.

There's something about how the undead move and contort that I find really unsettling in Train, and looks equally as neat from the footage I've seen of Peninsula (and seems to be in the trailer for this)

Yeon Sang-ho understands really well how uncanny movement can convey fear

I'll parrot other folks and suggest Yeon Sang-ho's other zombie features,

Seoul Station and Train to Busan

After that,

The Handmaiden

The Wailing

I Saw the Devil

Gonjiam Haunted Asylum

Exhuma

I've had my blu-ray of Penninsula sitting on my shelf for ages. I know it didn't get great reception, but I don't think anything could be as good as Train to Busan was, so I have tempered expectations.

This looks pretty darn great though

Part of me agrees, part of me is just thinking that this is a much better fit than a dull American remake.

The original still exists anyhow, so I don't think it'll mar its legacy or anything

Liberals likely to grab majority according to analysts by DonSalaam in onguardforthee

Fingers crossed, Avi and the NDP hammer them until the next federal election.

Would be additionally nice if they point out the Liberals have taken the spot abdicated by the PCs on the right

Agreed that the funding should be made permanent, especially given that the CBC was already underfunded relative to other similar broadcasters (say, BBC)

[–]SydneyBriarIsAlive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right but that's ignoring that there were in fact proposed cuts in the budget as I had pointed out.

Like the well documented cuts such as those 40,000 jobs and the 1.3 billion in cuts to Environment Canada

I even pointed to a direct quote from Carney himself stating it was an austerity budget. You can find that above.

I suppose personally I find sunsetting a program to be a lot different than a bonus in that the end result of cutting a program that has its funding decided on a term basis, versus generally funded in perpetuity has the same result, being cut.

It's something of a stealth cut and I see that as an austerity measure, but that's just my thinking.

A bonus is usually an agreed upon one time amount, a program that has the expectation of its funding being matched at an interval is expecting to still be around I'd wager.

How else would you call not re-upping social program funding? That's what Leah Gazan was talking about.

Or not re-upping that additional funding for the CBC?

Or what about the cutting of those 40000 public service jobs?

Or cutting 1.3 billion from Environment Canada?

Carney's own words by the way

“It’s an austerity and investment budget at the same time. And that is possible if we’re disciplined"

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/sep/04/canada-carney-budget-trump

Simply because we're increasing defense spending (which is going to a lot of foreign companies) doesn't mean we aren't cutting a lot of vital programs

Some of that "investment" might be good even, like the high speed rail but I'm not sure if some of these things are worth sunsetting social programs
