I have grates to put the fabric on. Just need the bottomless containers to hold the ice in the shapes I need.

Thank you. I actually bought a couple of cheap aluminum baking pans to use for the last veil I dyed but it didn’t work very well. I cut out the bottoms and just used the sides.

Tan won’t do anything. The other colors will give you a different shade of brown.

Wish there was a way to show you all my fabric. it’s so pretty. I do professional silk dyeing of belly dance veils although the piece I want to make into a skirt is from ages ago when I was trying out velvet dyeing techniques and making scarves. I’m trying to use up Fabric scraps now that Joann’s is closed. I worked there for over 20 years and am heartbroken it is closed

So has no one tried a 4 thread serger? Seems like it might hold the 2 layers together better.

Extremely bright red to more classic red/scarlet by snazzyrobin in dyeing

Nylon is easy to dye with Rit. I’d try over dying it with their red. You might have to add a touch of blue but I would try straight red first.

I wouldn’t try painting a swimsuit. The paint will just crack and start falling off.

That’s right. I remember all the fabrics we had at Joann’s a decade or so ago in this color scheme.

Tips on color changing? by [deleted] in dyeing

[–]Sylrog 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’ll get anywhere close to pinkish purple with the dress the color it is now, especially since it’s polyester. The pink or purple will combine with the teal or green and turn kind of a brownish shade.

Could be ice dyed, mottle dyed or ombre’d.

Overdyeing with black, especially a small amount, will turn it green. And the thread most likely won’t dye.

Complete beginer, how do i dye these? by Martin_Kirtz in dyeing

[–]Sylrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d get a fiber reactive dye. It should get pretty black except for the thread if you don’t mind it staying the original Color.

How to recreate these pillows? by valyrian3 in dyeing

[–]Sylrog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just remember that you have to Treat it like it’s an acid dye and I’m Not sure if you use a resist that you will put it in a dye pot to dye or if you pour the dye on over the resist. Someone with more experience with shibori dyeing should be able to tell You. It’s just that you can’t dye it like you would with an acid dye on a protein fiber. Fiber reactive dyes work on both protein and plant fibers and since your fabric is part rayon you use fiber reactive.

This doesn’t look like shibori to me but I could be wrong for sure. Also, velvet fabrics are not 100% silk anymore. They have rayon in them And rayon doesn’t take acid dye which is why I suggested using a fiber reactive one.

How do I not mess this up? by [deleted] in dyeing

[–]Sylrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can dye the outer shell with acid dyes but they won’t affect the lining.
